View Full Version : What will you name your kids?

My middle name is difficult to pronounce and spell, though for some reason I decided to use it for the first 18 years of my life, before going to my much more conventional first name. I don't want my kids to have to go through the frequent annoyance of having to correct people on pronunciations and spellings, so I'm going to give them simple, but not totally generic, names.

My personal rules for picking a name include:

- No "Twelve Apostle" names. Waaayyy too popular.
- No alternative spellings, unless they're generally popular. The worst one I saw was "Liisa", carrying a completely redundant "I" and making me want to hate her parents as much as she probably does.
- NO bullshit celebrity names. Sunday Rose? Apple? Are you fucking kidding me?
- NO brand names (Mercedes, Chanel, Armani... although Ford is a maybe)
- No place names (Sydney, Boston, Brooklyn). I recently saw a kid called "Denva" being named in the deaths column of our city newspaper (he wasn't the one to die, though when he grows up he'll wish he was... oh, he could even be a she, I can't bloody tell...)
- No naturally occurring geological or atmospheric phenomena (Raine, Tempest, River, Lake, Sky)

So here they are so far:

NAMES FOR BOYS
- Regan or Reagan (has that 'royal' sound to it... recently met a guy named Regan and instantly thought "Damn, that's a cool name")
- Sebastian
- Jack

Fallen out of favour: Vincent

NAMES FOR GIRLS
- Caitlin (my absolute favourite girls' name)
- Sophie (has that Greek feel without sounding too classical, plus all 3 Sophies I know are hot, so they must be on to something)
- Julia or Juliet (as you can probably tell, I'm a big Shakespeare fan, where I also got Sebastian from)
- Abigail (frequently 'Abby')
- Ellie

Currently considering:
- Emily (a previous favourite, but has fallen out of preference)
- Amy

Being Jewish I have to name them after a dead relative, and I don't know who will still be alive when I have my kids so I can't really think about it right now.

i'm not so sure about having kids but i've held off from naming any pets this name, just in case- Cassidy, it works for a boy or a girl. It's my favorite name ever.

I got bitched at yesterday by someone named Liza, but she insisted it was pronounced Lisa. Either way she needed a punch in the face.

For a boy I would go with Cameron, Damon or Paxton, for a girl Jenna, Megan, or Lilly (not Lilith since I just don't like the sound of it).

Being Jewish I have to name them after a dead relative, and I don't know who will still be alive when I have my kids so I can't really think about it right now. There are probably a lot more choices than you think. You could dig way back into your family history and give them an old school sounding name and make it popular again. I always thought that was kind of awesome. Still more original than naming it directly after your parents.

I like Persephone actually. I'm really into Greek mythology to be honest. It's Dante and Jacob that I don't really like. I hate the name Jake and Jacob has an unfortunate tendency to be shortened to that. Dante has been overused and it just comes off as a little cliche, that's all.

sweet, sweet. I'm more confident in the female names I like than the male ones. I'm just assuming that I'll have to let my wife/child-carrier name the boys because I'm pretty dead set on those names for the first two girls I have. haha

It doesn't have to be your parents but it's supposed to be someone who died recently.

i surely wont have kids in a very long time, but i know i will try to avoid naming them anything that is really supposed to be a last name e.g. madison, parker, wilson, carter, etc.

id also try not to use an androgynous names, which are quite common. im a sucker for the obviously feminine and masculine names. and spelled in the traditional manner

so off the top of my head...

girls- julie/a, lindsey, brittany

maybe its just a family thing and not a religious thing.

I find myself adding names to the list all of the time.

Boys: Gavin, Caleb, Jude, Maxsim

Girls: I used to want to name a girl Dakota, but that's recently become popular, so I don't think so anymore. I really like the name Imogen.

I also like the idea of naming kids after songs. I was named after the song "Alison" by Elvis Costello, and I think it's a nice connection to have.
