Ok, so today definitely started out a little strange. I woke up to a myspace message from a member of the Dallas area chapter of the KKK. I can't verify his membership, nor would I want to but he did threaten my safety. Indirectly, mind you but still enough to leave me wondering what can be done in situations like that.

Here is the message I received.

hi there, i see that there is one of those

....african americans....

in your band.

thats gonna be a problem. i am a dedicated member of the KKK southern chapter. And well, you see
Enoma
that is definetaly not a white person name.

SO

i can no longer associate with you or your little band.
My brotheren hood greets you ad will be delighted to see you at your next show.

As an African American in the south I'm in a strange place. Part of me wants to ignore that this ever happened while the other part of me wants to make sure that there's one less person online spreading messages of hate.

What did I do to this kid to make him want to to hurt me? I want other people who are in the minority (whether it be by race, sexual orientation, transgender, whatever) to share their stories and what they did. I don't believe there should be any place for people who spread messages of hate.

What do you think?

First, you shouldn't ignore it. Any messages of hate in any form should be reported. There is still a chance that it is some joker pretending to be someone he isn't trying to get a rise out of you or piss you off. We all know from this site that people will say/do anything if their true identities are somewhat anonymous. Bands get shit all the time on websites where "fans" can interact with them. These guys might have just taken the low road.

You would be doing the right thing by telling the authorities what happened. This is the kind of thing you don't want to mess with. They can find out if it was just you that was singled out or if it was several people. If it is a real and credible threat, I'm not saying that this guy doesn't have boys who would want to start even more trouble, but I would still tell someone regardless.

If he is a joker, he is an asshole. If he is telling the truth, he is an asshole. Either way, I say follow your heart on this one.

Also, I am terribly sorry that something like this had to happen to you.

i'd report it any way possible. It could very well just be some douche bag thinking he's funny, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

i've never really been threatened like that.
the worst i've had to deal with is native jokes around white folks, and a bit of bullying because i'm a smartass, i wasn't a considered a "real" native and was thus an outsider in some villages.

i developed a bad attitude, a fuck the world mentality, and endured a bit of an identity crisis.....doesn't work out that well so you probably don't want to do the same.

My brother goes to Baylor, in Waco, and I bet alot of you know how that place is.. not the most racially tolerant place in the country. He told me at least once he had the "N" word thrown at him, at a party, with a drunk hick. It wasn't friendly either, but I mean what can you do? There's always going to be idiots that don't know any better and just hateful people, but I just wish all the racism would go away, but I bet it'll take alot longer for that to happen.

But pertaining to your situation dude, you made a good choice.

That's good.

I would never ignore such threats. If it's a joke, then he should still get a beating.
