True, but it will more than likely work.
Obama should combat this, put on some galoshes, and get in New Orleans!

Not that - the thought that in a free country you can protest and do whatever you want.
I think its hilarious that the police rightfully accused some people of being anarchists for once. (foods not bombs, at the least they are strongly supported by anarchist movements). I've been watching democracy now's coverage from today, it's very interesting. Also Eileen Clancy from I-witness video was the one they keep citing as arrested.
So basically she tried to get her co-workers released and that's "cause to incite a riot"?
the presence of the RNC apparently is very corrupting, or at least justifies bizarre logic.

A : Bullshit

Love that program.
I've never watched it before now, but I might do so more often from now on.
Here's the full transcript. It's such an awesome indictment of the US military expansionist goals that I think it deserves it's own thread.
MIKE CASEY: My name is Mike Casey. I was a medic in Vietnam. I served in Vietnam from 1970, ’71. I was getting—I got there toward the end of the war, so I was seeing the homicides, the suicides, the rampant drug addiction, heroin addiction, shootouts. We had assault helicopters. We had Cobra gunships. We had APCs. We had dusters. We had 155-millimeter howitzers. We had 175-millimeter howitzers. And we were killing people.
JEREMY SCAHILL: John McCain, of course, is also a Vietnam vet and is running in part on his war record. Your response?
MIKE CASEY: You know, he had twenty-three combat missions over Hanoi. I know what those airplanes hit. I have many friends that have walked into villages that had been bombed by napalm, that have killed hundreds and thousands of innocent civilians. He bombed civilian targets, because civilian targets are military targets. You have to remember that. It’s the most important thing that you can remember. We kill innocent civilians on purpose. They are military targets. This Geneva Convention stuff is bull [blank]! And that’s what we’re doing in Iraq. That’s what we’re doing in Afghanistan. It’s what we did in Vietnam. It’s what we did in Laos, Cambodia, Panama. You name it.
JEREMY SCAHILL: Both the Republicans and the Democrats refer to John McCain as a war hero.
MIKE CASEY: Bull [blank].
JEREMY SCAHILL: Why?
MIKE CASEY: I got a Bronze Star in Vietnam. Am I a hero? No! I did—I made a difference in Vietnam, and I’m proud—to a large degree, I’m proud of my service, because I think it made the difference between helping a lot of people in Vietnam with their injuries, because, like I say, I saw injuries. I saw dead American soldiers taken off of helicopters. And, you know, gentleman, there is nothing worse than to see an American soldier take his last breath. And there’s nothing worse than seeing a dead Vietnamese civilian that was killed irresponsibly by an American GI.
I get so tired of this hero stuff. I was not a hero in Vietnam, end of story, Bronze Star or not, Combat Medical Badge or not. I did my duty in Vietnam. But John McCain riding on a hero status? Give me a break! You know, I get so tired of John McCain thinking he’s the only one that was damaged in Vietnam with his post-traumatic stress disorder. It’s funny that when he came back as a POW, they never interview the enlisted men that were in those camps. And I know some of those people that were in those camps.
I was gonna go see RATM on the 3rd but my dumb bitch friend thought her money would be better spent seeing Atmosphere on the 1st. Fucking cunt. I should just go alone, but I'm sure tickets are probably sold out by now.
Edit: They're not actually sold out, yet. Hmm...

Edit: And even so, I am on the fence about my support. The GOP won't pay attention to these protesters, so I feel they have to make a point. Do I believe violence is the answer? No. Do I think they should just to submit to the police without any resistance? Hell no.

This morning, President Bush discussed Hurricane Gustav, using the occasion to push for more offshore drilling (http://www.ajc.com/news/content/news/stories/2008/09/02/bush_oil_drilling.html):
BUSH: One thing that’s for certain, when Congress comes back they got to understand that we need more domestic energy, not less. And one place to find it is offshore America, lands that have been, have been, uh, taken off the book, so to speak, by congressional law. And now they need to give us a chance to find more oil and natural gas here at home.

it makes me so mad that not enough people are considering offshore drilling when they think about who they are voting for. it's actually a tremendous element in this election. but anyway, these anarchists piss me the hell off. i've been to so many protests against this war and there's always a bunch of idiots who think breaking shit and spilling fake blood everywhere is the way to achieve "peace." it's so hypocritical and makes everyone else involved look reckless and extreme.

Tonight in his address via satellite to the Republican National Convention, President Bush blasted Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) critics. Invoking McCain’s time as a POW in a North Vietnamese prison, Bush compared these torturers to members of the “angry Left”:
If the Hanoi Hilton could not break John McCain’s resolve to do what is best for his country, you can be sure the angry Left never will.

i personally had a few problems with that thompson speech (acting like it wasn't a republican that has gotten us into the current economic mess in the first place, pimping mccains time as a p.o.w. and the torture he endured....conveniently forgetting the fact that republicans have decided torture is now acceptable, the fact that thompson is a celebrity of sorts so by mccains own standards he probably shouldn't be listened to, acting like alaska's size has something to do with the ability to lead a nation, playing the us vs. them angle for all it's worth, insinuating that people from small towns automattically have a good set of values, neglecting the fact that mccain doesn't have a strong pro-life stance)....but i know alot of people ate that shit up like it was thanksgiving dinner.

I think he did everything the McCain campaign could have asked for tonight. I can see how his speech could really turn off Democrats with a lot of knowledge about politics and other people who do as well, but I don't think he was trying to win those people over. I think he will help McCain win over a lot of people who don't follow politics too closely that will remember him as "the nice looking democrat who ran with Al Gore". People will see someone that they remember as a well known democrat supporting McCain. Theres no question in my mind that him supporting McCain will definitely sway some 'democrats' and independents that aren't too fond of Obama over to the McCain side. Whether that is right or wrong is another story, but what can you do.

To me it sounded like he was trying to say, "People should listen to me because I am a Democrat and even I side with you guys this time around. That should say something."
He's not even a Democrat, so he needs to stop saying that. It's very misleading, which I guess fits in with what he's trying to accomplish. But yeah, anyone that thinks or believes that he is a Democrat, should take a few minutes of their day and look that up.

How many people who actually know and follow politics are going to be greatly influenced by, or base their votes off of what someone who supports a candidate says in a speech? I would say very very few. So I would say those people weren't really his target audience. I think one of the main goals in Thompsons speech was to paint a very strong and vivid picture of McCain that would leave a very positive, lasting memory in the minds of some people. I think he was able to do that. The picture of McCain he painted (lame analogy, i know) will definitly leave a lasting impression on those undecided voters who don't really follow politics, which will then influence them to vote for McCain.

On the topic of Leiberman, he's a walking lie. He supports Obama on 95% of his issues. His insinuations that Obama never crossed party lines is buuuulll pucky (
Gibbs stressed that it was a "flat-out lie" that Obama hasn't reached across party lines during his time in public office. Gibbs cited Obama's work with Sen. Richard Lugar, R-Indiana, to keep nuclear weapons out of the hands of terrorists and with Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Oklahoma, on the government budget.
Gibbs blamed what he called lies like those perpetrated in Lieberman's speech for disillusioning voters and making them cynical) ( http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/09/03/rnc.democrat.reaction/index.html )
Looks like the Republican's really know how to pick em. I think Obama put it best when he said he wasn't going to run a campaign that gets voters to vote for him because of a dislike of McCain, but because they agree with Obama.

I wish I could figure out why anyone is going at this "experience" angle ... the only reason I ever bring it up is because of the hypocrisy from the McCain camp. By picking Palin for a job that inherently implies you are ready for the Presidency, you have shown that experience is not a big deal for your litmus test of President. You have made that argument a wash. You can argue her "experience" until you're blue in the face ... but it's a dead argument ... at absolute worst (and I would not make this argument because I think it's false) they are "tied" for experience. Fine. With that, by choosing her to be VP - you concede she is capable of being POTUS - therefore any argument about experience is FUCKING NULL AND VOID. On both sides.
So to continue to beat this into the ground ... is fucking stupid. Until someone can show me a Presidential correlation between experience (hell, executive or otherwise) and positive economic growth, war-time policy, approval rating, or anything else related to this office beside an arbitrary fucking number ... I'm going to keep bringing it up.

I like how "experience" always boils down to years in office. Not whether that time was spent doing anything remotely important (making decisions in the Senate about Iraq vs. saying in 2006 (http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/2008/08/palin-on-iraq.html) she didn't know enough about Iraq to make an informed decision about the surge), but the number of years you've been mayor of some podunk town in Alaska.

Here's a fantastic piece by Keith Olbermann. I love his comment on The Surge, which I completely agree with. McCain can't bash Obama's decision to be against the War in Iraq so he's focused on Obama's lack of faith in the surge, and the fact that it has succeeded, yet Olbermann puts it perfectly when he states that "if the surge worked our troops would be home from Iraq, or most of them would be." He goes on a little more but I'll let you guys watch the piece yourself.

Contrasting her resume with that of the Democratic presidential nominee, she says: "I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a 'community organizer,' except that you have actual responsibilities."
Obama worked as a community organizer in Chicago in the 1980s before attending Harvard Law School. Palin was a two-term mayor of the town of Wasilla, Alaska, a small town of about 5,000 people.

She directly addresses the skepticism some have expressed about her qualifications for the office, taking particular aim at the press.
"I've learned quickly, these past few days, that if you're not a member in good standing of the Washington elite, then some in the media consider a candidate unqualified for that reason alone," she says.
"But here's a little news flash for all those reporters and commentators: I'm not going to Washington to seek their good opinion -- I'm going to Washington to serve the people of this country."
THAT REASON ALONE!? PS: Guess which party better represents the "Washington elite".

Noonan, a Wall Street Journal columnist and former speechwriter for Ronald Reagan, and Murphy, a campaign strategist and onetime aide to John McCain, can both be heard expressing disbelief with the pick of Palin after they apparently thought they were in a commercial break.
“I come out of the blue swing-state governor world, Engler, Whitman, Thompson, Mitt Romney,” Murphy said during the mishap which has since been posted on YouTube. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrG8w4bb3kg)Murphy later flatly says of the pick, "It's not going to work."
Noonan is heard going even further, saying of the presidential race, "It's over."
"I think they went for this — excuse me– political bulls–t about narratives," Noonan also said. "Every time the Republicans do that, because that's not where they live and it's not what they're good at, they blow it."
Murphy, who was a senior adviser to John McCain's 2000 presidential bid, also adds, "You know what's really the worst thing about it? The greatness of McCain is no cynicism, and this is cynical."

I just turned on the RNC and thought I was watching a church sermon. There's a pastor praying with the entire convention. While I believe this prayer (which is pretty much directed towards Hurricane Gustav's casualties and those effected) is a nice gesture, I remember learning in school that we as a country believe in seperation of church and state (government).
Looks like we know where the Republican party stands on this...

I think it alienates people to bring it to a political convention. I think a silent prayer is appropriate but not one that advocates one religion as a support to a party or parties. I didn't see the prayer at the DNC and think its still wrong.
