now i've made a thread about this mans legendary father (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=515881), i can talk about one of my favourite albums released this year, by fela's son, seun

after hearing music from some of fela's other children, i feared his offspring would venture down the same path as marley's musically lack-luster children & rehash & rely on their fathers music & legacy. but thankfully seun hasn't gone down that route. despite teaming up with his fathers band, eygpt 80, it's not a simple retread. while comparisons are natural, it would be rather foolish not to rate him as a completely separate artist, he hasn't tried to emulate or reproduce fela in any way

afrobeat magic is alive & whizzing about with reckless abandon, the unrelenting groove carries that golden sound of defiance once more. on seun's debut album, many things, there seems to be two competing horn sections playing against one another. these horns are really the song’s true voice. the hail & wail of horns respond to seun's call. by the time he comes in with the vocals, his statements are more a confirmation or a synopsis of what has been revealed instrumentally already. i'm lovin' it. any ska, world, jazz fan will be impressed with this. an outstanding debut for someone who has soo much time to grow & evolve his music

any fans, share some love & discussion?

well worth it, i was hooked from the very start of the album, it grabs a hold of your attention & just never lets go, right the way through. a very very ambitious & grand debut

Did he continue the same Egypt 80 from his father?

yip, it's his fathers band. but obviously under new leadership, which creates a whole new dimension to their music. this is easily one of the most impressive debut albums i've ever ever heard

It sounds pretty good, though i actually like Fela's stuff better so far. I'll have to give the album a proper listen first though.

although natural, i try not to compare. i think they've skillfully created different & innovative sounds, pleasure to hear. but if you had to compare & contrast, seun is much less "chunky" rhythmically & probably of much more enjoyment to jazz & free jazz fans. the horns are gorgeous & defiant

I only listened to the first song, but I liked what I heard. His voice and delivery are a lot different then Fela's. Going to listen to the rest tonight.

that's awesome, you could probably really get into this. & the song lengths (on this album, i could see them growing in the future) are much shorter than fela's. which will be a good intro for a lot of people

I have just now discovered him on his new album. I will definitely go back and get his first album. Does anyone have the bonus track of "Giant Of Africa" from Seun Kuti's album "From Africa With Fury"? This is a bonus track on vinyl, as well as on itunes in France. Thanks!

New album is an absolute delight. Still digesting, but first impressions are fantastic.
