now i've made a thread about this mans legendary father (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=515881), i can talk about one of my favourite albums released this year, by fela's son, seun
after hearing music from some of fela's other children, i feared his offspring would venture down the same path as marley's musically lack-luster children & rehash & rely on their fathers music & legacy. but thankfully seun hasn't gone down that route. despite teaming up with his fathers band, eygpt 80, it's not a simple retread. while comparisons are natural, it would be rather foolish not to rate him as a completely separate artist, he hasn't tried to emulate or reproduce fela in any way
afrobeat magic is alive & whizzing about with reckless abandon, the unrelenting groove carries that golden sound of defiance once more. on seun's debut album, many things, there seems to be two competing horn sections playing against one another. these horns are really the song’s true voice. the hail & wail of horns respond to seun's call. by the time he comes in with the vocals, his statements are more a confirmation or a synopsis of what has been revealed instrumentally already. i'm lovin' it. any ska, world, jazz fan will be impressed with this. an outstanding debut for someone who has soo much time to grow & evolve his music
