The Great Kat mixes classical music and Thrash Metal. She was classically trained at Juilliard and plays violin and guitar and is quite possibly one of the fastest guitarists.

Madonna or Janet could probably get the nod, although I dont like either..
the only female artists I really listen to are
Alicia Keyes
Tegan and Sara
Regina Spektor
Amy Whinehouse
and..sadly...Katy Perry has found its way into my cd player a few times..

If you want to speak in terms of success, influence, and lasting power, probably Madonna, but I don't listen to her music, and wouldn't include her on a favourites list.

i enjoy many female artists, but the greatest ever? be very hard to go past someone like the "first lady of song", ella fitzgerald, who really lay down the foundations for just about every female vocalist to follow. or aretha fanklin, who had such a widespread impact across music. but not just for the immediate entertainment value of her songs, but like james brown, her music often had overtoned themes for the civil-rights movement that played a part
there's heaps others that are already coming to mind, i guess i'll have a think about it & answer again later haha

Me.
But in all seriousness, Lena Horne, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin... etc.
