Ok, I watch and read about my fair share of European soccer, and I've never once seen a team "nickname" used (ie Philadelphia Eagles), they just list the city. Now, a couple weeks ago I was reading an article on Arsenal, and they said "The Gunners". I didn't know if this was a play on words with their name or their nickname actually is the Gunners. I've never seen any other team described like that and never seen Arsenal called the Gunners since. So do European soccer teams have nicknames? Thanks.

Every team has a nickname in the UK at least but we don't shove it on the end of the City/team name. Newcastle for instance aren't called Newcastle United Magpies, magpies is only ever refered to in game commentary. As for other European countries, I'm sure they do have nicknames...it's just that they're in a different language. :P
