It was great news to me when I found out Butch Walker would be opening for Avril Lavigne. I believe that he is one of the best songwriters at the moment, and it would be a great way for people to hear his music. The only aspect about this tour was that every show would be in front of very large crowds. I was really looking forward to seeing Butch for the first time in a intimate club setting, but I decided to just go to the show to see how it would be.
Not really surprised, I was one of the only people in attendance who had reached puberty. With the young radio crowd almost selling out Denver's Pepsi Center, I had a feeling the show would be better than I was expecting. After a short wait, the large "Butch Walker" banner went up, and the man of the hour (in my opinion) walked out on stage. His back up band wasn't just your normal band; it was American Hi-Fi. Butch came out with all the energy and definitely got the crowd going. Filling his set with most of the songs off of his new album, Letters, he performed a magical set to say the least. With such tracks as "Sunny Day Real Estate," "Uncomfortably Numb," "Don't Move," and "Mixtape" being played in his set, I couldn't help realize how amazing of a musician Butch really was. I fell in love with his record, but a new found respect was made after seeing how flawless he was live. His vocal harmonies were absolutely perfect. My mouth dropped after hearing him hit some of the high notes on stage. I recommend to whomever's reading this that they go see Butch Walker ASAP. He is one of the most entertaining performers around today, and his show is something you do not want to miss.
p.s. Avril Lavigne actually wasn't that bad live.
