I had so much when I left to come to school. I was doing all of the reading. All of the work. I quit smoking. I quit drinking. When I woke up this morning all of my motivation was gone. I couldn't get out of bed. I'm skipping a class right now. I'm didn't do the reading for any of my classes today. I'm completely unprepared for a math test I have today. How do I get my motivation back? This sucks.

Think about what will happen to you if you don't get your motivation back. There's your motivation.

That is exactly how my first semester in college turned out.
It blew pretty hard. Go with kwsqd. A lot of bad shit happens when you don't get your motivation back. Get on it!
just act energetic and positive even when you don't feel that way at all. It works for me.

Motivation doesn't come to you, it comes from you.
You have to pick yourself back up and work harder, and realize the consequences of what you're doing and how it can affect you in the future.
I'm sure everything will work out, just take a positive approach to it all.

You need to find a balance. If you're someone who liked to have fun and drank and smoked you shouldn't stop because you're in college. If anything you should keep doing those things that make you happy. You need to set aside time for fun and time for working. Everyone I've seen who spent too much time doing one or the other either burnt themselves out from working too hard and stressing out, or was a burn out for not caring. College is a time to really grow up, and you can't do that strictly by devoting yourself to school or you'll hate your life. But school is important.
I always found readings to be a little pointless. Classes are a million times easier if you just go and take notes. As long as you don't skip, college shouldn't be that tough.

Drinking and smoking don't make me happy. Drinking makes me a violent slut and I'm sick of dealing with the ramifications of not being able to control myself under the influence. If I'm aware of my horrible behavior when I'm drinking then it's my responsibility to choose not to drink. And smoking is just bad for you (cigarettes.) It's one of the worst habits you can pick up in your life. Besides like serial killing. And anal. I still have time that I chill out, watch tv, hang out with friends but that time is on weekends when I've finished everything due for the next week. I kind of already grew up in high school. I already had my big surge in maturity. I fucked off all through high school and now is my time to dedicate myself to school. It's time for me to learn and to prove to myself and everyone else what I'm capable of.

Alrighty then, sounds like you know yourself pretty well. I would just say try to find a spot to go to study. Sometimes studying where there are distractions is a bad idea. If you put yourself in a place where there won't be distractions sometimes it's a lot easier to study.
My previous advice was more for people who hadn't had that maturity in high school.
And be easy, anal is a great habit to get into.

I had that problem and I pretty much wasted my entire first year of college. I'm motivated now though. I think.

I think this problem falls before more people than you might think. It happened to me as well. I wasted a whole year of college due to the fact I was unmotivated and didn't give a shit. I look back now, with regret. I can't even believe a whole year has passed by me without even stopping to say 'are you coming along?' I cannot fathom how I turned into this kind of person. I don't know what to tell you to help you to solve your problems. No one here is going to be able to tell you something that you can take to heart and automatically reconcile with yourself to change your thinking and attitude. You have to live and learn until you somehow stumble upon the right lesson. I'm still on that path. I've had quite a few letdowns in my life but I'm still learning; and that's all anyone can ask of you. Be yourself, do what you need to, do what you want, what feels right. There isn't a handbook for life, you create your own.

Until it doesn't. Then you just don't care about anything, and what kind of living is that? It's not.
Motivation stems mostly from an image of self worth. Do you feel you are the type of person that is worth being loved or accomplishing something? Whether it's work or personally related, it basically runs down to "What do you value most?" and "What creates that image of success?"
Is it comfort? Does that comfort come from having close friends and family near by? Is it because you are lacking their presence that you feel out of place and thus unmotivated?
Does it come from a goal you set as a kid? Have you not accomplished it in time? Does the time frame in which your life is placed right now not match an ideal standard for where you think you should be?
Just some food for thought. The point I'm getting across is to solve a problem you have to recognize it first. The lack of motivation is the result of a greater problem. Go to the source, figure it out, decide how to best deal with it, then do it.

I get what you're saying. This is how it went for me: Basically, the first few years I was in college I cared too much about a lot of things, and it was mostly things that weren't that significant in the long run. I would get myself way too stressed out and burnt out.
Around the beginning of Junior year, I started to reevaluate shit. I started to prioritize what I needed to actually care or worry about. I wouldn't say I just didn't care about anything but I didn't care as much about things as I used to. I cut myself a break and realized that not everything was life or death.
And since I realized that, since I started going easier on myself, things started working out. I still care about things. I have a good job that I care about keeping. I still get good grades that I care about. I care about my girlfriend and my family. But overall, if I fuck up, I don't stress about it like I used to. I roll with it, and I realize that I can learn from it. And that's where I get my motivation from.

Just think about what you can do after your done with your work. Plan something fun to do so you can look forward to it. It could even be as simple as catching up on sleep. Maybe try listen to music? I don't know it helps me focus.

you might want to try hanging out with people who are more studious. it sounds boring, but they will guilt you into studying and finishing papers and such. i stopped hanging out with my partying friends so much and it seriously saved my academic career. quite a few of my old friends are on academic probation now while i managed to keep all of my scholarships.
if all else fails, use ratemyprofessor.com, try to get classes with attractive instructors. that'll motivate you some.

That is a great stance to have. Congratulations on putting a good head on your shoulders. You're right in that not everything is life or death. In fact many things, people take too seriously. What's vital is the realization of what's actually most important to you in life.
My personal stance is the long term. Having a goal for the long term helps me prioritize the things I deal with now. Is my plan to settle down with a family sooner than later? No, so I'm not going to be as worried about permanent residential situations. I can move about more freely and live a looser livelihood... without having to worry about being situated in the right place just yet.
If I run into a road block with my career - is it something that is disabling me from doing what I do, or is it just something that's discouraging me from doing it. The two have a huge difference. One means I can't, the other means I won't. Only one of those can be fixed. There's about a million and two ways to approach this idea, and I've got just about that many comparisons in my head. I think I could write a book on it... but not here on AP.net haha

Also, you live about 5 minutes from me. I live in Kirkland.
If you ever want to sit down with someone and just talk about things, I'm always up for meeting new people and grabbing coffee. If you haven't made that many new friends since you've been out here, one new one is a good start.

How is it not living? There are very few things I care about, but that doesn't make my life any less meaningful.
And that's the problem, this whole 'image of success'. Many people believe it to be when you can roll around in a pool of your own money, but my 'image of success' is to not care about what will happens next, and what the consequences may be. I used to be scared of not having control over my life, but letting everything slide has become the most relaxing way of living.
I find comfort in having very few family and friends close to me, and not setting any goals.
YOUR problem is that you see not being motivated as a problem, I see it as a solution.
