Apparently a lot of critics are saying Anne Hathaway's performance here will be Best Actress frontrunner come January.

Looks great. Directed by Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs).

Indeed. Career-defining role, they say.

Reminds me of Pieces of April.

If that role wins her best actress that would be crazy lame. It is so derivative.

How would you know? You haven't actually seen the movie...

That being said, i'm guessing either Jolie or Winslet will be winning this year.

And are you saying the movie or the role looks derivative? Because i've seen tons of great performances in otherwise mediocre to bad movies (Marion Cotillard just won last year by that criteria).

Sure, it probably could have been with anyone else playing Edith Piaf, but Cotillard's performance just made the movie so engaging.

I definitely see Ann getting nominated for this movie. Although I can see the guy's point about her role being "derivative", I don't think that takes anything away from her performance. You completely forget that it's Ann Hathaway on the screen. I also think a lot of critics are blown away by performance because you really don't expect anything like this from her.

I saw this last weekend and I absolutely love it. Some of the scenes were so gripping.

The rehearsal dinner toast was the 8 most uncomfortable minutes I spent in a theater this year.

Thank god, I thought I was the only one who thought that movie was terrible except for Cotillard. So many people I know loved everything about it and I really don't get it.

I didn't think it was bad, just average. Cotillard's performance, however, I think will go down as one of the all-time greats.

I loved the rehab humor.

Agreed.
It was a really good movie. Anne Hathaway deserves the praise she's been getting, for sure.

Oh and, yeah, might seem like a random bumping of an old topic, but I just saw the movie yesterday and loved it, so I wanted to see if there was a thread on here about it.

Unfortunately, I couldn't watch the whole film because apparently Ninjavideo cuts movies off after 70 or so minutes, but from what I saw I was impressed with a few things and unimpressed with others. The acting was great, and I felt like I was watching a real family--not to mention that I can sort of relate to the content of it.

I won't say what I wasn't impressed with considering I did not see the whole film, but at times it did feel like it was crossing into melodrama territory.

I watched it for the first time yesterday. Rosemarie DeWitt and Bill Irwin were royally screwed by the Doubt machine.

Oh, and I totally would love to be at that wedding.

The wedding was the worst part of the movie, though it wasn't terrible by any means.
It just dragged on and on and on, making some of the dancing bits feel incredibly unnecessary.

finally saw it an absolutely loved it. Anne Hathaway deserves to win, but she'll most likely lose to Kate Winslet, who is long overdue for a win anyway

I definitely see where you're coming from, but at the same time you have to try and look at things from the screenwriter's point of view. This movie wasn't just about a recovering drug addict and all the pain and emotional trauma that comes along with rehab. This movie was about the concept of family as a whole. While Anne Hathaway's character was essentially the lead of the film, the movie by no means revolved specifically around her. I thought this made the film particularly unique--it's explication of what it means to be part of a family was truly moving. Yes, Anne's character struggled and yes, the consequences of her drug addiction tore her family apart, but the movie did not solely focus on this one incident. Rachel Getting Married explored the idea of growth and change, but also love--the foundation upon which family is built.

Sorry guys... I realize I kind of just went on a random rant, but the thing is that I could honestly say a lot more about this movie. I watched it a few days ago and was really blown away. It could easily have been written off as any other melodramatic movie centering around the troubles of a single family, but it did so much more than just that. These are the kinds movies I always hope to stumble upon.
Am I the only one who would absolutely love to be at that wedding?

I can't wait to get this next Tuesday, very interested in the commentary (cast and director).

I do agree with that. And I definitely enjoyed that part of the movie. But sometimes the movie felt like it was buying time so that it had a longer running time (mostly the parts after the ceremony where it just cuts from shot to shot of everyone dancing for like 10 minutes).
