People take pitchfork seriously?

Depending on the reviewer and how closely their opinions/taste mirrors my own and they do, in fact, promote many good bands I'd otherwise miss if not for their editorials and reviews.

Honestly, this whole "I'm so cool, Pitchfork is for fucks" sentiment is odd. I could understand not necessarily being a fan of the site, but I'm consistently shocked by the vitriol slung at the blog. Sure, it's a site that conveys an esoteric sense of pretentiousness, and some of their reviews are rather laughable, but it's not entirely devoid of substance and usually provides some very entertaining reading.

kearn1tm
09/05/08, 07:45 PM
Oh, and Exile in Guyville is a good album that doesn't hold up as well and suffers in contemporary listens due to the fact that a low-fi "girl and her guitar" album with the lyrics predominantly comprised of candid depictions of Phair's rather candid desire for sex and the woes of her shitty taste in men being far from the edgy lyrical fodder it was in '92.

Regardless, a good album that isn't quite great, but certainly an enjoyable, genuine and somewhat depraved LP.

I do agree... I mean, who do somewhat hate everyone who happens to review a Mars Volta album on there, but I have found some great bands by just looking at their older reviews/their wiki page with the list of albums they gave over 9.0...

the only thing i don't like about pitchfork is the rating number seems kind of arbitrary at times, like you'll see an album that's being praised fairly heavily by the reviewer and at the end it will say something like 5.0 of 10. but the reason everyone here hates on it is because most people's favorite albums would be lucky to get over 5 on pitchfork.

the reason the scores bother me so much is that i feel like they aren't at all connected to the review, as if the reviewer liked or disliked the album more than they were supposed to so they decided to tack on the "right score" at the end. i was also not a fan of how the Best New Music scores are based basically on the score. I mean, is an 8.6 album really that much more amazing than an 8.4?

but it is funny to see people get all up in arms about pitchfork hating on things they like.

The ratings do seem entirely separate from the reviews at times, almost as if to fulfill a certain mandate which is unfortunate. They'd be better off scrapping the entire notion of scores and relying solely on the writing to convey their views. Shame it won't happen because of site traffic.

As for the best new music section, I suppose they need a clearly defined cutoff mark.

i wish they'd get rid of it too but it'd definitely get rid of all the people who just look at the score and go away.

i think the cut off for best new music should be 8, 8 seems like a better cut off than 8.6

Yep. Sad fact is scores mean more to the readers than content.

8 and up would likely include too many releases. This is all speculation on my part but I'm guessing they want "best new music" status to be fairly difficult to attain.
