Which of these losing Best Supporting actor performances from the past ten years is your favorite (I just picked my favorite non-winner from each of the past ten years)?

I thought Casey Affleck was phenominal in TAOJJBTCRF. Benico was a close second though.

21 Grams was a severely underrated movie in general. That, not Babel, should've gotten all the Oscar nominations.

I feel like once people start voting it is going to be Casey Affleck by a landslide.

I voted for Cruise. His performance in Magnolia was fucking unreal.

William Dafoe in Shadow Of The Vampire, such a great underrated film.

Ahh, I have to go with Cruise. Despite his weirdness, he owned Mackey.

Frank T.J. Mackey: I will drop-kick those fuckin' dogs if they come near me.

Frank T.J. Mackey: Don't go away, you fucking asshole, don't go away. Don't go away, you fucking asshole, don't go away! Don't go away you fucking asshole!

Plus, the whole interview scene with him and the reporter - so good, so tense.

Seriously, I saw that movie in theaters twice, and both times, like huge cheers and applause after that line.

Benicio Del Toro in 21 grams. I love that movie.

Easiest poll I've ever seen.

Tom Cruise was godly in Magnolia. List the winners from those years, bet his performance is better than 8 of them.

He and Portman stole that movie. I remember that's one of the first movies I really noticed him in and I just thought, "damn he's good".

Great thread. Clive, because his performance (along with Natalie's, like Jess said) made the movie. And it is my favorite movie ever.

But I also think that Cruise should have one for Magnolia, Del Toro was magnificent in 21 Grams, and Casey Affleck would have run away (for miles and miles) with the Oscar last year if Bardem/No Country didn't own the critics' hearts.

Good poll.

Closer is one of the most depressing movies I've seen, merely for how stupid and selfish everyone acts throughout.

I think this is Julia Roberts best performance as well. I'd never really even liked her before.

Because Mike Nichols is one of my favorite directors, I wouldn't be a proper fanboy if I didn't point out that this was largely his doing. Nichols doesn't just direct movies; he directs actors, and it's prevalent from his theater shit, to The Graduate, and all the way up to newer movies like this.

Naomi Watts = the most underappreciated actress in Hollywood. 21 Grams, Mulholland Dr., Funny Games, Ellie Parker, I <3 Huckabees, Eastern Promises, etc., etc., etc. And just one Oscar nomination to show for all that. She gave the best performance of 2001 by a mile in Mulholland Dr., and she wasn't even nominated.

King Kong!

I wonder if she was actually scared working with that giant monkey. They trained that thing so well.

Same here. I mean I love half of what I've seen, but the other half I can't wrap my mind around at all, so I don't understand enough of the film to appreciate it fully. I thought I had Lost Highway entirely understood and then BAM, the last ten minutes hit me like a freight train.

I've only seen Blue Velvet and I was just like, what is this? How can anyone possibly think this is great?

It was basically weird stuff and Dennis Hopper acting like an insane person.

I was also underwhelmed by Blue Velvet although it was my first exposure to Lynch. I would say that you've at least got to give The Elephant Man (easily one of the 10 best films of the 80s) and Eraserhead a shot. Also, Wild at Heart is great and easy to take.
