View Full Version : Loyalty to Team vs. Loyalty to School
Broken Parachute

I've been a Notre Dame fan in football and basketball ever since I could remember. It's just how I grew up. But now I'm going to SHU...and while they don't have a football team, they obviously have a basketball team and they're obviously in the Big East with ND. I'm confused because I love ND and I want to keep following/cheering for them, but I feel like it's wrong to do that being a SHU student, haha.
So my question is: when faced with the dilemma of choosing between your school's team or the team you followed previously, which would you choose?

in head to head matchups you root for SHU or stay neutral. otherwise it's perfectly acceptable root for both teams.

I go to BSU, but root for Wisconsin all the way.

You can definitely root for both schools; however I don't recommend doing so when the two teams play one another. When that happens school trumps team. I had an ex-girlfriend who tried to support both when Minnesota and Wisconsin played each other (she was from Madison) and people on both sides did not treat the fact she wore both teams' shirts to games nicely.

I had this problem when Auburn played Syracuse... I grew up half way close to syracuse but auburn now was the school. i had to pick auburn cause a win = better parties and bar scene that night.

school definitely.
northeastern plays syracuse in football and basketball and i root exclusively for northeastern in those games.
gonna be at the carrier dome on the 20th to root for a team that isnt syracuse, and thats going to be weird

being in the exact same situation that you are in 8(!) years ago, i always stayed neutral. although i was never the ND basketball fan you seem to be.

I've rooted for Arkansas my whole life. I'm going to Oklahoma State right now, but I couldn't care less about their sports. I still go to a ton of Arkansas football/basketball games during the season.

ugh i had a friend that did that. I can see it being more acceptable in a situation where it's not a huge rivalry, but come on, how retarded can one person be?

I actually went to Arkansas my freshman year. Despite that, I've been going to Arkansas games since I can remember walking. I've been following them since I started following sports closely. I wouldn't drop them just because I'm going to another school for 2 years. If they played each other, I'd root like hell for Arkansas. It has annoyed the shit out of some of my friends up here, but oh well.

i dont see why you should be forced to break your allegiance to a team because you decided to get your education elsewhere. just because i couldnt get into UW Madison shouldn't mean I can't cheer for them over any other team, even if i've been a fan since birth.

They haven't played each other in anything besides maybe baseball since I've been here, so there's that.

She wasn't the brightest person in the world. Although it was funny one time when I took her to a Gopher-Badger hockey game when the girl behind us made her take off her Gopher shirt for "disrespecting" it.

you can root for them, but it's stupid to root for them over your own school I think.

Obviously I'm not going to sit in the student section wearing blue and gold, but it would hurt me to not root for ND, haha. I'm definitely a Seton Hall fan though. I've been a Seton Hall basketball fan for the last 4 or 5 years...just not as hardcore as with ND.

Yeah, just don't be obnoxious and go in the student section/wear it around school, and you should be fine. I'd never root for another team over Arkansas.

I was in the Arkansas student section once when a student came in with a Texas shirt on. He almost got killed.

While I've sat in a rival's student section with my team's jersey before, that's basically the last thing you want to do unless you're looking for a fight.

I guess...I mean if I grew up a badger fan and went to UW-Milwaukee and cheered for the badgers when they played, I wouldn't think UWM students would take much issue with it. I guess it would depend on how intense the rivalry was, as far as if it's appropriate or not.

Agreed...though, to be fair, Seton Hall is at best a verge tourney team (most likely NIT), and Notre Dame may be a top 5 team...so, if you are REALLY conflicted, root for Notre Dame, it will end up hurting less

i played for youngstown state, but grew up an ohio state fan. these last two years when they've played, i've cheered for ohio state.
i think that's different though, cause there was no way the penguins were gonna pull it out. not to mention i was cheering for the coach i played for. so my example doesn't really matter.

I stand by the theory that when you go to a college, you are born into their fan-base. It's just as strong as being raised to be a fan of a certain professional team.

eh, that's a load of crap. Just because I go to a school doesn't make me obligated to root for their specific sports team over a team I've been following my whole life. Besides, I went to that certain school before anyway.

I think that's what makes it different in your case. It's sort of hard to born into another school's fan-base when you have already attended another one.

Yeah, I wish I was back there.
I've tried going to games here. I was at the Texas-OSU bball game that went 3 OT before OSU won it on a last second shot. That was the best college game of the year that year and arguably the best in OSU history. If that can't win me over, nothing can. I mean, I still want them to do well, but in the end, I couldn't care less.

Everyone at school tells me I have an accent and that instead of saying Staten Island, I say it like "Stah-nye-land." I can't help the way I talk. Damn Jersey kids, and their North vs. South bullshit.

^ what he said.
I'm sure its different in a situation like fondest's, where the school you went to isnt anywhere on the same level, but I think if you are going to a school that's on the same level (nevermind in the same conference!) as the one you've followed, you have to be compelled to root for your school. If you don't, you should transfer because you probably dont care enough about the school you go to.
rooting for ND football and having a side interest in it's sports that compete with SHU is totally legit, but I can't see how you could either root against your school or stay neutral when they play against one another.

i gotta disagree with most on here. if you've been loyal to Notre Dame for so long and they've been your number 1 team for awhile, you have to stick with them. I don't think you can just all of a sudden put another team ahead of them just cause you go to school there.

No, it doesn't obligate you. You can't force this stuff upon people, it's all a matter of personal emotion.
But for those that do share my feelings, there really is nothing you can take away from them.

when you spend 18 years being a canes fan going to every home game every year since age six, you don't change your allegiance. I go to uf, I don't have 30,000 dollars to go to miami, but there is no way in hell I'd erase 18 years of my life and root for the gators over them. I root for the gators, but not today. when the gators pummel the canes today, ill still be sporting my ken dorsey jersey.
Ha I know what you mean. I was born in Orlando and grew up a huuuuuge Gator fan. Too bad I don't have $30,000+ for each year of school.
