viruses in emoticons?

when browsing the forums, sometimes I will get a virus alert saying that there are trojans in some of the .gifs/emoticons available for use by the site. I've had problems with two, notably the "woot" ones and the "strongbad" one. I've been able too keep the comp safe and it doesn't do much damage, just thought I'd let you know.

I don't really think you can get viruses from such small files as images.

But really, I could be wrong.
