It's all about Perspective! Perhaps the finest synopsis of recent history I've seen as it pertains to the perspectives of the political parties and the media. As Oliver Wendell Holmes said '.....truth is the perfect defense...'
In the years since terrorists attacked us , President Bush has liberated two countries, crushed the Taliban, crippled al-Qaida, put nuclear inspectors in Libya , Iran, and North Korea without firing a shot, and captured a terrorist who slaughtered 300,000 of his own people. And the Democrats are complaining about how long the war is taking.
For those of us who spent time in the military, believe in our military and support the men and women of our military, read on.............
John Glenn (DEMOCRAT) said this -----It should make you think a little:
There were 39 combat-related killings in Iraq in January. In the fair city of Detroit, there were 35 murders in the month of January. That's just one American city, about as deadly as the entire war-torn country of Iraq.
When some claim that President Bush shouldn't have started this war, state the following:
FDR (DEMOCRAT) led us into World War II.
Germany never attacked us; Japan did. From 1941-1945, 450,000 lives were lost. That's an average of 112,500 per year.
Truman (DEMOCRAT) finished that war and started one in Korea. North Korea never attacked us. From 1950-1953, 55,000 lives were lost ... an average of 18,334 per year.
John F. Kennedy (DEMOCRAT) started the Vietnam conflict in 1962. Vietnam never attacked us.
Johnson (DEMOCRAT) turned Vietnam into a quagmire. From 1965-1975, 58,000 lives were lost ... an average of 5,800 per year.
Clinton (DEMOCRAT) went to war in Bosnia without UN or French consent. Bosnia never attacked us. He was offered Osama bin Laden's head on a platter three times by Sudan and did nothing. Osama has attacked us on multiple occasions.
In the years since terrorists attacked us, President Bush has liberated two countries, crushed the Taliban, crippled al-Qaida, put nuclear inspectors in Libya, Iran, and, North Korea without firing a shot, and captured a terrorist who slaughtered 300,000 of his own people. And the Democrats are complaining about how long the war is taking.
But Wait, There's more
It took less time to take Iraq than it took Janet Reno (DEMOCRAT) to take the Branch Dividian compound. That was a 51-day operation.
We've been looking for evidence of chemical weapons in Iraq for less time than it took Hillary Clinton (DEMOCRAT) to find the Rose Law Firm billing records.
It took less time for the 3rd Infantry Division and the Marines to destroy the Medina Republican Guard than it took Ted Kennedy to call the police after his Oldsmobile sank at Chappaquiddick.
It took less time to take Iraq than it took to count the votes in Florida!!! Our Commander-In-Chief is doing a GREAT JOB ! The Military morale is high!
The biased media hopes we are too ignorant to realize the facts.
But Wait There's more!
JOHN GLENN (on the Senate floor - January 26, 2004) Some people still don't understand why military personnel do what they do for a living. This exchange between Senators John Glenn and Senator Howard Metzenbaum is worth reading. Not only is it a pretty impressive impromptu speech, but it's also a good example of one man's explanation of why men and women in the armed services do what they do for a living.
This IS a typical, though sad, example of what some who have never served think of the military. Senator Metzenbaum (speaking to Senator Glenn): 'How can you run for Senate when you've never held a real job?'
Senator Glenn (D-Ohio): 'I served 23 years in the United States Marine Corps. I served through two wars. I flew 149 missions. My plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire on 12 different occasions. I was in the space program. It wasn't my checkbook, Howard; it was my life on the line. It was not a nine-to-five job, where I took time off to take the daily cash receipts to the bank.'
'I ask you to go with me ... as I went the other day... to a veteran's hospital and look those men, with their mangled bodies, in the eye, and tell THEM they didn't hold a job!'
You go with me to the Space Program at NASA and go, as I have gone, to the widows and Orphans of Ed White, Gus Grissom and Roger Chaffee... and you look those kids in the eye and tell them that their DADS didn't hold a job.
You go with me on Memorial Day and you stand in Arlington National Cemetery, where I have more friends buried than I'd like to remember, and you watch those waving flags. You stand there, and you think about this nation, and you have the gall to tell ME that those people didn't have a job ?
What about Metzenbaum? For those who don't remember - During W.W.II, Howard Metzenbaum was an attorney representing the Communist Party in the USA. Now he's a Senator!

Wait hasn't the Taliban bounced back and are threatening the stability of both Afghanistan and Pakistan or is that just my imagination?
Iraq has calmed down because the US is bankrolling Sunni Groups that where against Al-Qaeda, it should not be forgotten that a large portion are composed of former nationalist insurgents; these groups still tend to hold their anti-US, anti-Shia and anti-government leanings. It will be interesting to see what the Iraqi government will do when they are left to bankroll these groups come October.

My dad told me the same thing. He said I'll understand when I'm older and went on ranting about how he voted Democrat when he was younger and he realizes it was dumb, blahblahblah. If I could have gotten a word in, I would have told him I'm going to be a teacher and won't be anywhere near the top 1% that gets tax cuts under McCain's plan (and even if I was, I'm not that selfish), that also as a future teacher I'm extremely opposed to McCain's proposed educational policy, that I'm against the war, that I'm pro-choice, believe in gay rights and equal pay for women, that I'm for national health care, and that it doesn't matter what party he's for, there are a ton of other reasons I'm voting for Obama.

I like how they all do that same thing. when my mom and grandparents told me that, they wouldn't let me get a word in either. they just kept going on about how I'd see that I was wrong later and blah blah blah. with the exception of being a teacher, those are all reasons I have for the way I'm voting too but my family doesn't get that. although at least my mom has started to see the light in regards to Palin. at first she was saying she'd rather have her as president than Obama since she has more "executive experience" and all this crap.

By the time we are older the Republicans will offer the ground left of the democrats and the democrats will be futher left than that. So while this may be true, it is not as though we will support what the Republicans support now.
That's an interesting way to look at it. I can definitely see that happening.

The point is that there are drastic differences between the two parties that would prevent the majority of people from suddenly switching over. I would hate myself if I ever supported a party that was pro-life and against gay marriage.

The article was written in 2004, it is interesting to note that the Battles of First and Second Fallujah would take place later in the year.
Since we're talking about grandparents, i'd figure i'd air my encounter with my grandfather over labor day. per some background, my dad always says that my grandpa's views started changing as soon as he got money. my grandpa worked for ComEd, one of the largest electrical services companies in the nation, and started from the bottom and rose to become VP of the Electrical Worker's Union. After his retirement in 95, it was like a rapid sucession of moron hit him. He's slowly weaned that as he calls it "pinko" view and now that he's approaching his 70s he's gone off the deepend.
I never really had the political clout to go toe-to-toe with him, after all he's been around since 37 and well has seen more than I will for sometime. My family is resoundingly liberal, I mean my parents and aunts and uncles grew up in the mid 70s and were poor. They weren't hippies but they certainly were influenced by that train of thought. I was always interested in history and political science but really fell in love after I transferred home from Iowa last winter and it became my soul and being. When stuck at home you have to find something to keep you going. Since then I've been largely self-educatiing through kos and other means on issues. Since 2000 when my grandparents were stuck in a quagmire about who to choose. My grandfather began sincerely believeing in the concept that only a Governor can properly govern the nation. I do not understand this as some of our most prominent Presidents have been Senators but c'est la vie. Since 00, he has quickly and frighteningly moved right of center. I can't comprehend it.
Anyway, he seemed to be on the fence about this election. In the early summer my cousin, who was interning at Obama's Senate Office in Chicago, and I sat down for lunch with them. Unbeknowest to me, I had worn an Obama shirt to lunch. I don't know if you've seen them but it's Obama's face plastered over 80% of your torso with either "Progress," "Hope," or "Change" on them. They were rather surprised at my choice of dress and after awhile engaged in conversation. I shocked them with some policy that they had no clue on, after all they're in the "but he never says anything!" crowd concerning Obama's belief in switchgrass as an alternative fuel and his healthcare program. They seemed to be satisified and were excited that I was passionate about the election.
Thereby taking us to this Labor Day Weekend. where as soon as I entered my aunt's house he launched into rhetoric about how "executive" experience is more than Obama or Biden has ever done. Not one to spoil the mood, I politely stood to the side and let everyone yell at him for bringing up politics without a) everyone being drunk or b) the fact that no one wanted to hear him. An hour or so later he launched again into a tirade about such and such that made no sense. Admittedly, he can't hold his liquor much anymore and has a tendency to lash out at those who challenge him. I wasn't about to say anything and was a good little soldier for awhile. I looked at my dad who gave my some reassurance and engaged in a conversation with him and my two uncles, one also a republican, on how silly the Palin pick for VP was. They all agreed it was an embarassing gimmick. However, upon the conclusion to that conversation my grandpa went into a tangent about "how the Democrats would let the Russians take over America." I had had enough. I immediately launched into the ridiclousness that McCain is ready to send me and my cousins, carefully naming each one of them, off to a war worse than Vietnam. He jumped down my throat about the evils of Russia again. I countered that the media hadn't been properly covering both sides of the issue and that Palin wouldn't have known what to do anyway. He immediately jumped down my throat about Biden and how wrong he is. I countered that he was an expert in foreign policy whereas he decided to talk about how Biden favored the "segregation" of religious groups in Iraq. I countered that it had worked already in Baghdad what with the massive genocide and the Sunni Awakening outside of the city ending much of the violence. He decided that I had "been reading some crazy liberal stuff" and that Biden was a bad man. I countered with the fact that everyone here knows it was Dukakis who took Biden to task on his one misstep in the race in 88. From right of right field he came out with some obscure guy whose now in a Chicago jail because of something or other and is tied to Biden.
Needless to say, arguing with the elderly gets you nowhere but a lack of respect between the two of you. It's just not worth it.
