Most threads end up deteriorating into chat threads nowadays...shame.
What 3 people? I never go in the Chat thread anymore. Waste of time if you ask me.
This band is seriously fantastic. They're still crazy enough to be considered math rock, but toned down enough so that you don't get exhausted to listened to them for long periods of time. Win.

Not really, i looked it up on last.fm, but none of the band names stick out to me right now.
Well some other notables are, as previously mentioned, This Town Needs Guns (favorite!) and Cats and Cats and Cats. Both of them have vocals, so if don't really like instrumental music in general, those are right up your alley. Then there's other good bands like Ghosts And Vodka, Cap'n Jazz, Algernon Cadwallader (the latter two have vocals), Double Dragons, Jacob And I, and a ton of others. Great genre.

Instrumental music is great. I can dig jazz, minimalist stuff, IDM, and the occasional post-rock. Can't say the same for math rock though.
idm?
The jazz I've listened to is fantastic, and minimalist can be sweet. Post-rock is where it's at.

The Post-Rock artist i can think of is Battles. Is this right?
IWasaCamera

IDM = Intelligent Dance Music (unfortunate name, I know)
It's basically moody electronica such as Boards Of Canada, Autechre, etc. Jazz is great, both acoustic and electric despite what purists may say.
I'd say Battles is math rock. Then again, I'm horrible with genres.

Battles would definitely fight the best home under the math-rock genre. Although they have some electronica and post-rock elements as well. Maybe slightly IDM, based on Vinh's description.

Depends on what you're looking for from Mogwai. Straight up post-rock, go for Young Team. A little electronic doodling, go with Happy Songs For Happy People. Most accessible releases are probably Rock Action and Mr. Beast.

This first song off Hawk Is Howling is pretty good so far.
This is good news.
I am sort of in an Electronica kick, but i'll be safe and go with Rock Action.
Probably a good idea. Just grab those IDM recs a few pages back to satisfy the electronica craving.

They are all written down. Sweet.
The first two songs on Hawk Is Howling, are really fucking good. Some of the best post-rock I've heard all year. If this album keeps it up, it could sneak into my current top 5.
Sigur Ros I believe will reign supreme all year. Album is clutch.

I tried Sigur Ros, because most people with similiar music taste to me really enjoy them. But i really can't get into it. Kay Kay and His Weathered Ground, The Slackers, and Xavier Rudd are in my top 5 so far.
Over the past several months, I've grow to love Sigur Ros a ton. They're now in my top 10 all-time.
That's only 3 bands...

Still not too fond of the Sigur Ros album. Not sure what it is but it just doesn't click.

Well i'm leaving room for other possible releases.

Yeah I don't know what it is, but it's excellent. Has almost a The World On Higher Downs/Stars of the Lid meets The Allstar Project meets other things. Anyway, very good. Very atmospheric at times.
Oh! Those are two reccs for you Vinh. Stars of the Lid and The World On Higher Downs. Two great ambient/post-rockish bands. Excellent stuff.

Me too.
I've had a great 2008 as far as music goes. Everyone else complains too much.
Ben said he hasn't found one good album this year. I've got like 30, ha.

I've had a pretty good year too. BUt i hope it finishes out strong.
I wonder if the new Circle Takes The Square will come out this year. From what I heard of the stuff they played live, it sounded incredible.

I am really digging the new Jenny Lewis album.
As of late, same here. The rest are just kids that post one liners to up their count. "sup" "haha" "cool" "sweet".
Fuck off.

It's solid. Top 30 this year probably but I can't see myself going back to it that often.
This de la Mancha album might be worth checking out for you. It's on sordo. Kinda like Sigur Ros, but vocals are in english and no falsetto.

I'll add it to the list with that other one I was supposed to check out.
You have any recs for mois?
IWasaCamera
09/09/08, 09:04 PM
You into any minimalism? Seems like it'd be up your alley. If not, look into the classics of the genre first. My personal favorite is Music For 18 Musicians by Steve Reich.
What exactly is it? Sounds like it would be something like drone/ambient.
IWasaCamera
09/09/08, 09:13 PM
Certainly has ambient and drone sensibilities. Considered experimental early on, each song is a bridge to the next. The genre isn't about peaks and valleys but rather a constant, steady pulse. As its name suggests, minimalism is known for limited use of just about everything (notes, instruments, lyrics, etc.). Done well, it can absolutely spellbinding.
Sounds very intriguing.
Downloading that Steve Reich album.

Excellent track record.
I, on the other hand, have a meh track record, ha.
IWasaCamera
09/09/08, 09:22 PM
Haha well it isn't really fair. I'm way, way, way too picky. Your recs would probably fare rather well with most open-minded peeps.
My problem is you've got 4 years on me in which you've been able to find out/test/discover a lot more. So anything I think you'll enjoy, you already know about, hahaha.
IWasaCamera
09/09/08, 09:28 PM
Ha yep, either that or it's just not my thing.
Very true.
I'm still not completely out of my pop-punk phase. Did you ever even have one?
IWasaCamera
09/09/08, 09:39 PM
Oh yeah, how'd you think I ended up here? Been lurking for years. When Deja Entendu came out, I was an absolute fanboy.
Oh man that gave me a good chuckle.
Is that Steve Reich album just one track that's 56 minutes long?
IWasaCamera
09/09/08, 09:42 PM
Divided into parts but it's basically one song yeah.
The file I download is just one mp3 called "Pulse - Sections I-X - Pulse".
But good god is it fantastic 13 minutes in.
IWasaCamera
09/09/08, 09:56 PM
Glad you're enjoying it. And no worries, that's the right "part listing" if you will.
So is the whole album comprised of 18 different instruments dipping in and out?
IWasaCamera
09/10/08, 10:44 AM
Yep. Sorry for the belated reply.
I've listened to about 3 times now. Incredible.

Cool cool. Philip Glass and LaMonte Young are two other notable figures in minimalism that you may want to check out.
Will do.

Most post-rock bores me frankly. I'm probably losing cred points but I'd take the genres I listed over it any day.
Haha, I've expressed my dislike for EITS more times than I can count.
Frankly, I find them to be boring and a poor representation of the genre. And they only remake the same record over and over again.
Whatevz, to each his own.

As with any genre, there's a lot of generic crap, but I think it's more noticeable in post-rock because it's so easy to fall into the formulaic soft-loud structure.
Personally, it's my favorite genre. When done right, nothing can top it.

And would you two consider EITS a good introduction into Post-Rock?

I know you're quite fond and I can enjoy the odd release here and there. It's just that very little of it draws me in. I try to keep up with the highly praised releases and they usually fail to impress.
As you said earlier, to each their own.

Obviously Godspeed. Essentially the post-rock kings.
Also, 65daysofstatic and Sigur Ros are the other top two in my book. Perfect examples of the genre.
Other personal favorites:
Mogwai
Caspian
This Will Destroy You
Scraps of Tape
The Samuel Jackson Five
The Allstar Project
Do Make Say Think
The Pirate Ship Quintet (even though they've only released 3 songs so far).
As far as gateway band, I'm torn on the subject. Why listen to a mediocre example of a genre when you could go right to the best, right?
But for those who need to be exposed to a genre more gradually, I'd say EITS is perfect to expose you to post-rock.

I would say that Post-Rock is a genre that needs a gateway band. I remember trying to listen to Godspeed like a year ago, and i absolutely could not get into it. But since then, i've been listening to more Funk and Reggae, which has longer, drawn out songs, a parallel i see in Post-Rock, and that has helped open me up to bands like EITS, and Mogwai.

Alright so i watched The Darjeeling Limited today, and downloaded the soundtrack. I would suggest these two songs for listening and i'd like your feedback on both of them:
Peter Sarstedt - Where Do You Go To (My Lovely)
Joe Dassin - Les Champs-Elysees
