But, I guess that is the same for Sororities. Only dirty sluts and girls who just party are in them. here that is.

People have such a twisted perception of fraternities and sororities. I'm rushing for a fraternity and I couldn't be happier. They're some of the most down to earth people I've had the chance of meeting. There are those typical frat bros out there but people seriously need to be less condescending about the whole idea of greek life.

If you like the people, go for it.

Joining a fraternity was one of the best choices I made in college. Had I not, I easily could've seen my self transferring after freshman year. As far as DG goes, they are the god squad sorority on our campus. But Alpha Chi Omega takes the cake for the ugliest.

I never understood this so I ask here. Why exactly is it called "Greek Life". I understand how these words are Greek and all (or so I believe), but what else makes it "Greek Life". As someone mentioned about, I wouldn't be so much offended, but annoyed by how this term is used. From my two roommates who are in TKE, all I get out of this "Greek Life" is the whole ideal of brotherhood, and every so often, community service. And as they are not the stereotypical frat guy what up bro people, I still don't understand the origin of "Greek Life" and what it is to stand for these days.
So anyone care to explain beyond the typical sisterhood, community service and how it relates to actual Greek Life beyond the use of letters?

my classical civ teach always made fun of the "greek life" cause he lived in greece and speaks greek, and when he was in college was in a frat house and said the two are in no way similar.

Just something that has been adopted over the years. If I'm not mistaken the greek letters stand for greek mottos and sayings. That's the closest thing to greek life that is related to it all.

I rushed, but then I dropped out after the second night, when I saw what it was really all about. I have good friends who are in sororities and fraternities, but it's really not for me. It seems like freshman year they were obsessed with it, sophomore year they were involved, but now they are less and less consumed by it. I am not sure if it just got boring or if they've just matured.

Oh cool. My friends and I used to have little clubs we were in, too. But they involved lavish tree houses, and I'm sure Greek life has nothing as great as that.

Thanks for clearing that up. So an honest question. If I paid attention to this thread, I believe you are either rushing or in a fraternity yes? What made you come to this decision to do so. Is it something that every day social interactions (parties, friendships made through class and what not, etc) can't provide. I would presume it may look good on a resume. Is it a certain networking that one can't do outside of a fraternity/sorority or is it something else? Just wondering as I ask this to most that I meet, unless they are absolute douchebags (and this is not to say people not in Greek Life can't be douchebags because they can i.e. me at times etc).

You would be correct, I'm currently a pledge, haha. Honestly at my school it's just a part of the social life. There's one fraternity that is full of the stereotypical bros (Zete) but I pledged to DKE which has some of the most down-to-earth guys I've met here. I was on the running teams of my high school for four years and eventually became captain of all three. I developed a sense of camaraderie and really missed that after I graduated. I also got into a pretty bad accident the first weekend of school and a bunch of the guys were really supportive and willing to help. I developed a pretty tight bond with a few of the guys in the matter of a week.

In the end I just felt like I could gain back that camaraderie that I missed and besides that, I'm sure I'll be introduced to some of the best times of my college life while in the fraternity. To me it's not such a big deal as some people make it out to be but I'm really happy with my decision.

I guess it varies from campus to campus but at my school at least, it develops a greater sense of community where everyone is concerned with the general welfare of one another.

I was in a fraternity in college and I loved every second of it. Granted each school is different, but I went to Wake Forest, a small (4,000 undergrad) private school in North Carolina for those who have never heard of it. Down there Greek life reigns supreme, and excluding athletics I would say 70-80% of the school was Greek, there were very few alternatives if you didn't want to sit in your dorm room and do nothing everyday. It's a personal decision. Are all Greek students douchebags? No. Are some? Yes. Find a group of guys/girls that you fit in with, and then join if you want.

Thanks for answering once again. As I said I have my views on the whole Fraternity/Greek Life ideal, but nothing that I would count as ignorant as I've always gone with understanding before making conclusions although some are probably stereotypical. And as always, everyone has their own views and opinions that is theirs. There is definitely a theme of camaraderie and community that goes along with a lot of the people I talk to and I respect that. So yeah, good luck with all of that. Do they make you carry around matchbooks and every time you don't acknowledge a "brother" or something, do they take them away? Haha, I only ask because that's what my roommates and some kids I knew freshmen year had to, which is understandable. I would end up drunkenly using them at times to light my cigarettes, either knowing or not knowing what I was actually doing.

I doubt I would ever rush, but the hostility towards Greek life is a little much, not to mention one-sided. People tend to automatically group sororities all together with initiations, promiscuity, and such but from my experience there can be a lot more to them than that.

Im still not too sure how it would benefit me seeing as i dont drink. Does anyone have a KGR chapter at their school? Also since i dont drink would there be a point in me joining. I just dont know any other purpose of a frat than partying so maybe some of you can enlighten me.
