These are my favorite lyricists, so out of mine or your own, who writes the words that hit you the hardest in terms of sheer brilliance?

I cannot chose between Jesse, Dustin, and Tomas.

TheZeroKid
09/08/08, 10:54 AM
Right?! I had a extremely hard time choosing almost to the point that I almost didn't make the poll, but I gave it to Dustin simply because all the sonnets at the end of each Alchemy Index wowed me to the point of awe.

i was just shocked to see Tomas Kalnoky on the ballot...i feel like streetlight/and all of his other projects don't get enough publicity on this site. Though I gotta say, Dustin is a verrry close 2nd.

you dumb kids, clearly Greg Graffin is the best lyricist listed on the poll. Have any of you even heard of Bad Religion? here's a hint, they've been around for about 30 years, single handedly revived the punk scene in the mid 80's and defined the most popular sound of punk for the 90's (ie. the "forbidden beat", they influenced the explosion of "skate punk" bands in the 90's like Nofx, NUFAN, Lagwagon, Pennywise, etc.). They have 14 albums, maybe you should give one of them a listen, I'd suggest starting with "The Empire Strikes First" or "Stranger Than Fiction" or "Suffer".

oh ok, I'd like you to point me to one Thrice song with lyrics this impressive. This song compares the inevitable human extinction to that of the dinosaurs, an extinction that will be brought on by our reckless ambition as a species. i'm not saying Thrice doesn't have some outstanding lyrics ("stare at the sun", "see you in the shallows", most of "the illusion of safety". And yea, most of Deja Enendu is loaded with impressive lyrics but the vocabulary and poetic knowledge of Dr. Greg Graffin is somethig to behold.

"Beyond Electric Dreams"

Here we go now

No one here can show you where it is but I can point to a sign
On the roof of the world without apparent design
The frozen definition of a lunatic ambition to rise
The air is thin, the future dim, dimension hard to find

Up on a mountain encased in solar rays
Beyond electric dreams of inarticulate passion plays
Coming down a mountain, eons have a human ring
The conversation of impassive planets
Intercepted by a human being

Ratioclination is a practicable way to derive
An attitude of altitude and probity by which to abide
Or maybe of the a theophany of flaming creosote in disguise
The air is thin, the future dim, dimension undefined

Up on a mountain encased in solar rays
Beyond electric dreams of inarticulate passion plays
Coming down a mountain, eons have a human ring
The conversation of impassive planets
Intercepted by a human being

Here glaring cold in the crystalline geometry of night,
Obscuring form and tracing faceless fears
Of a suprahuman immensity in a patch of sand
Or a raptors guileless shivering intensity,
I'm only a visitor,
And atom of atoms on a jutting red splattered synagogue of granite
As it crouches literally in space,
A frozen amoral giant gazing heavenward forever

Let's go where the raptor goes to the mountain in a cosmic glow
We'll have a genuine terrestrial show on a mountain - on a mountain
Let's scan the horizon clean for any trace of human schemes
And try to touch upon immortal themes on a mountain - on a mountain

Actually.. I saw that someone posted it as a joke.. but Pete Wentz does deserve credit as a great lyricist. You can't say that TTTYG was a great album just based on the music. He wrote a lot of great lines in there that mean a lot to people. Part being a great lyricist is being able to connect to people. He def. did on that album.

I love Brand New for many reasons. They were one of the first bands that opened my eyes to good music, my first live show, and I've got so many memories attached to their songs/lyrics that I enjoy them even more.

I know not everyone loves Brand New as much as I do, but I honestly can't see how you can not appreciate them or their lyrics.

It's cause most of their fans are teens. The majority of BN fans don't listen to Dylan, Beam, Drake or any if the other countless great lyricists. They stay within the scene and of course Lacey looks like a genius when the other bands they listen to are the Audition, the Academy Is and so on... I've got no problem with people liking those bands but I would hope people would think to broaden their horizons because that music has such empty and meaningless lyrics. I enjoy a few BN songs and Lacey has his moments but the greatest of all-time? Please.

Can you explain how you connect with his lyrics? Just curious

It's not so much greatest of all-time. That's like asking who the greatest QB of all-time is. It's an impossible question and everyone will say a different group. I do like Bob Dylan, I don't know the others, I won't lie. I wouldn't even classify TAI or The Audition in the same genre as Brand New either.

As for a connection on the music, it's from personal experience, to being around people while at a show or on a drive. It's the same way/reasons you've connected with whoever is or who are your favorite lyricists.

I don't think Anthony Green's lyrics are all at that impressive. Sometimes they don't make any sense, idk just my opinion.
well its more just what his band stood for on OLG , thats what made me say him

It kind of is greatest though cause he asks who is the best lyricist. If there was no "other" option then it'd be out of the choices on this list but because that option is available that means everyone that has ever written a song. And yes everyone might say someone different, but just like with QB's, there are a pretty common top 5 answer. If you were to show most people who didn't grow up in the scene BN and tell them that Jesse is the best lyricist you've ever heard, you might give them a good laugh.

Personal experiences have no connection with my favorite lyricists or lyrics. Certain songs I like more than other and certain songs I can't grow out of because of my experiences I've had at shows with friends and whatnot but that has no effect on how good I think the song is. Just a reminder of good times that's all.

Best lyricist, in my opinion, does not mean best ever. I don't know his intentions. I assumed he meant the 'scene' today, not of all time.

Besides the fact, how can you really argue lyrics? It's like asking who is the best poet, or novelist ever. It goes down to personal taste, that's all.

oh ok, I'd like you to point me to one Thrice song with lyrics this impressive.

This is obviously just my own opinion, but I have always found the lyrics to the following song to be extremely thought provoking. It speaks to the socio-economic inequalities between the have-nots in developing nations and the haves here in consumer culture, post-industrial america. It accounts for the incredible apathy each of us has been taught to carry with us each day, to shield us from the facts that we deplore those who require our help most.

"Cold Cash And Colder Hearts"

They are sick, they are poor
And they die by the thousands and we look away
They are wolves at the door
And they're not gonna move us or get in our way

'Cause we don't have the time
Here at the top of the world
Feeling alright
Here at the top of the world

We hold our own by keeping our hearts cold

Different god, darker skin
They are just not a burden that we'd like to bear
They are living in "sin"
There are so many reasons for us not to care

But I'm feeling alright
Here at the top of the world
Doing just fine
Here at the top of the world

We've learned money matters most
So we keep our cards held close
Here at the top of the world

We hold our own by keeping our hearts cold
And we've learned what matters most
So we keep our hearts cold

They are no one
They are nowhere
They are not our problem
Not worth saving
Nonexistent if we keep our hearts cold

They are no one
They are nowhere

I love posts like this: so you've met and talked with a majority of BN fans? I think it likely you'ven't encountered 1% of BN fans (given how large their following is) let alone 51%.

I happen to be a huge BN fan and simultaneously a big Dylan fan, though IMO I would put Lennon or Morrissey way over Beam or Drake.

the lyrics to that Thrice song are outstanding and I respect your opinion (that's big coming from an asshole like me).

Although, i think "stare at the sun" is equally impressive lyrically...and "issusion of safety" has kick ass lyrics throughout...'see you in the shallows'...even 'trust'...'in years to come'...uhhh most of it really.

jesse lacey, greg graffin and dustin are really all excellent lyricisists and each has their own unique style.

i'm a brand new fan and i'm 28. I know at least 3 other guys over 25 that are brand new fans.

i got into them when i was 21, when YFW came out.

What does the age you were when you got into them have to with anything if you still love them and are out of your teens?

at the brand new/thrice show, i would say the average age of attendants was 20 or 21, but there was still a significant portion over 21. i wouldn't not say BN have a young fan base overall, not like, paramore or a day to remember or anything like that. shit, Jesse Lacy is freakin' 30 years old and most people got into BN 5 years ago or so when Entendu came out so I'd say even the ones that were 15 back then would be 20 now.

i think you misunderstood my post, i'm saying the average age of a BN fan is probably 21, with half their fans being over 21 and half being under 21. I would not say the majority of BN fans are teens, not based on what I have seen at their shows in terms of audience age and based on the fact that they've been pretty well known for 5 years now. But sure, I'd say 1/4 of BN's fan base are teens, but that pretty much goes for any band that isn't well into their 30's like NoFX or something.
