Well I'm taking a short break from my oh-so-fun research paper to recommend some stuff for everyone. This week I'm going to break it down to different genres and recommend a couple from each, so enjoy.
Punk/Hardcore:
The Nation of Ulysses (http://www.southern.com/southern/band/ULYSS/) - I'm actually listening to this now, so I figured I'd recommend it. This band was really, really good. A lot of people say Refused took a huge influence from their song writing and I'd agree. If you've never heard them, do yourself a favor and get 13-Point Program to Destroy America and Plays Pretty for Baby.
The Briefs (http://www.byorecords.com/bandpage.php?band=thebriefs) - Sex Objects. I've only given this a quick listen so far, but it sounds excellent.
Planes Mistaken for Stars (http://www.pmfs.net/) - Up In Them Guts is a really good record. These guys are always ahead of the crowd.
Indie:
Panda Bear - Young Prayer. Nice...
Mock Orange (http://www.mockorange.net/) - Mind Is Not Brain is something that you should own by now.
Pinback (http://www.pinback.com) - Summer in Abaddon is a nice continuation of their earlier work. Good stuff.
Metal: Put down those horrendous albums you might want to call "metal" and try some real metal on for a change
Meshuggah (http://www.meshuggah.net/): Contradictions Collapse changed a lot of perceptions when it was released. Chaosphere, while generally their least well received (because of its...uh...chaos) is good, as is Nothing.
And speaking of Meshuggah...side-project time:
Fredrik Thordendal's Special Defects - Sol Niger Within...this album is nuts...crazy talent here.
Opeth (http://www.opeth.com): Everything these guys touch is gold. If you're not into heavy check out their release Damnation. It's all clean and it's amazing as well. All their other stuff is epic...start with Blackwater Park or Deliverance.
I guess that's enough for now. Back to the research paper...
