yeah. of course. i set up the show at 1919 in fort worth, and was at the show in denton with them. and i drove to austin with stymie and hung out at red 7 for party marty's shindigorama. when TRB comes around i drop my life and follow them. im bummed they had to cancel their post fest tour b/c i wanted to find an excuse to miss class and see them a bunch of times.

You were in one of the opening bands at 1919, weren't you?!
I'm pretty sure I completely remember you! I'm pretty sure we talked in the parking lot of the 1919 about the amazingly kickass records you got in that day. That burrito place across the street was amazing, btw.

sooo the riot before is signed to paper+ plastick now, huh?
Paper + Plastick seriously loves Richmond, VA. Not only has the city provided us with P + P staples Landmines and Foundation, but it also served up our most recent signees The Riot Before. The Riot Before have been busy boys since 2005 with several excellent releases already under the quartet's belts. They started with a bang and released the "Horseshoes and Handgrenades" CD the first year they were together. They then followed it up with the "So Long, The LIghthouse" 7" EP on Quote Unquote Records and a split 7" with Broadway Calls that both saw the light of day in 2007. 2008 saw The Riot Before honing their sound even further as they released the critically acclaimed "Fists Buried in Pockets" album on Say-10 Records. While comparisons to Gainesville powerhouse Against Me! have popped up at times, this band is not riding any coattails. They play the sort of punk anthem that is at once catchy and different. Their anthems are politically charged, but not overbearingly so. The message never obscures the bands power and energy (and vis versa). Virtual touring machines, The Riot Before have already managed to chalk up over six official tours (the longest being a 75 day full US jaunt) and have shared the stage with the likes of The Gaslight Anthem, None More Black, Bomb the Music Industry, Off With Their Heads, Tim Barry and Smoke or Fire. 2009 finds the band with a new home at Paper + Plastick and exciting new releases in their future. Details will be coming extremely soon!

So. I've given the new album a whole handful of spins and at this point? It's my favorite of 2010. I'm sure it'll get toppled eventually but...Holy fuck. Being a fan since the first release? This shit blows my mind.
Not in a genre-defining sense, but in a "holy fuck, look how far they've come!" sort of way. The production is slick and full-sounding without being "too much," the songs are consistent but have some variety, they succesfully avoided becoming "just another folk-punk" band, and the lyrics keep getting better and better.
I'm sure this all made me sound like a total fan boy. But fuck it: T.S.R. Hard. Can't wait for the vinyl to come out. If it does. P&P's been slackin' lately. Still waiting on that Wilhelm Scream EP.

Oh, I've seen that video before. Haha. But I don't know. I've been a fan (albeit via MySpace) since before that first record dropped, when it was an acoustic project (2006, maybe?) ... And really got into them when the first album came out on East of the West. Which was a bit before this whole thing could be considered a "craze."
Maybe I'm naieve? Who the fuck knows. Either way, the one hole in the whole thing is the fact that they seem to have steered clear of much of the previous "folk-punk" stuff and gone for a more "rock" approach. It just seems weird to accuse somebody of attempting to "cash in" on something while they don't seem to be making any money, probably ever will, and are playing shitty bars. Haha.
I would actually buy the possibility if their new album had keyboards and a folk-punk vibe. But...Yeah. Shrug.

My point wasn't so much your age in terms of appreciating music. You aren't discussing music. You're attempting to discuss the philosophy, morals, etc. that you presume to be behind the music being made.
There's no age limit on appreciating music. But in attempting to discuss the rationale behind certain decisions? A certain amount of experience is helpful. It's easy to point fingers about "selling out" or attempting to "cash-in." But, really? When you look at Against Me's career...On the grand scheme of things? All they've achieved is becoming a marginally successful punk rock band.
Playing the music they play they will never--I repeat, never--be able to pack arenas. Talk to me when they've written a song that Top 40 radio decides to play. Not when they're one flop away from getting dropped by their major label.

Omg Against Me must be the first band to ever go from an indie to a major and change their sound in order to fill arenas.
Funny how no one gives older artists the same shit, even though 99.9% of any asshole who picks up a guitar wants to play music for as many people as fucking possible. As soon as a melody more than a core group of people enjoy pops its way onto a record, all hell breaks loose.

Yeah, but most of those bands never made money off of a DVD in which their singer specifically said "We've had people tell us they'll give us a million dollars to make a record. That's insane. That's so far removed from anything we want to do or want to stand for as a band." or "Just give me a scene where the music is free" or "Our arenas are just basements and bookstores across an underground America", etc. You get the point.
This argument has been beaten to death since 2004 though so I will stop.
