View Full Version : Who would you say are the most respected songwriters in the ap.net scene?
End of Disc One

I'm new here so I'm just trying to get a feel of what artists are respected, which ones are considered crap, etc. My hype for The Glass Passenger drove me to this site in the first place, and I'm happy to see that Andrew McMahon is pretty respected here. I've also seen a lot of love for Max Bemis, and people seem to hate bands like Fallout Boy.
Basically I'm just curious about the consensus of respected musicians, so I can look into their music and sound intelligent in future conversations. Thanks in advance.
Andrew McMahon is a definite.
Aaron Marsh seems to get a lot of praise.

not really. jesse is a farrrr more eloquent lyricist. jesse has a distinctive voice which is very technically sound in the mid-low ranges too, whereas andrew mcmahon is a carbon copy of the ever-exaggerated socal accent in california punk-tinged pop-rock. as for the songwriting, well, jesse has had maybe 3 or 4 songs i consider bad whereas andrew mcmahon more often than not writes in mediocrity in my opinion.

What I'm saying is that they write different kinds of songs, not that one is better than the other. If you really want to just keep it simple and say that this is better than that and ignore that they're two different types of songwriters then alright. To me it's like comparing two different styled guitarists; neither one is better, just different.

of course you would think that all the anti-scene people on here somehow think that EIT is somehow different and better. and i seriously, seriously dont hear it. its still a poppy scene album and a lot less well-written than others, both lyrically and musically, pop music cliches are overbearing throughout and the focus on melody is to prominent for my liking.

Dude, he bitches about the "hipster culture" then proceeds to ensure us all of just how "proud of his life he is." It's the bullshit posturing of someone who's highly self-conscious trying to tell both himself and everyone else how secure he is in the face of such facetious people/sub-culture. It's obnoxious.

Dude, he bitches about the "hipster culture" then proceeds to ensure us all of just how "proud of his life he is." It's the bullshit posturing of someone who's highly self-conscious trying to tell both himself and everyone else how secure he is in the face of such facetious people/sub-culture. It's obnoxious.
i mean psychology wise it appears that way, he could just be cocky, but either way his bitching about the scenesters is pretty true and relatable, something that had me nodding my head and smiling when i heard it. i mean i dont feel the need to contra-analyze a songwriter when he decides to make a statement.

and completely contrived. I wish someone would write the quintessential "posers are lame" song too. That'd be swell.

Okay. Again, I find it obnoxious and, in the wake of amazing essays, pop culture writings and the like, superfluous. This is merely my opinion, and one tainted by the fact that I find Bemis to be a hack.
