View Full Version : What artist/bands are the reason for the music that you listen to today?

basically what bands/artists do you thank for introducing you to the beautiful world of music.

music never meant too much to me until around 2 years ago. i just wasnt that into it, but then i discovered a few people who just made me adore music and their the reason im broke all the time and i absolultley love it cause its all worth it. haha. it sounds pathetic. but the main reason im asking this cause yesterday i found out FINALLY what happened to jesse of hellogoodbye.hes going back to college. i knew he was gone, but to here it officially was a huge bummer and it got me to thinking...

he was prolly one of my first favorite band guys. i have always adored jesse. i loved his prom and homecoming song. he was like the perfect band guy to my 16 year old self. i use to make my best friend bring in old alt press magazines with hellogoodbye in them so i could look at the pics of the gang and of course jesse. but hellogoodbye wont be the same band anymore

the others would be the all american rejects, linkin park and i guess i would have to include new found glory. they have some amazing songs that ive always held close to my heart.

my current music now would be forever the sickest kids, bayside, hawthorne heights, the spill canvas, the rocket summer and so many more thanks to those guys i mentioned. and there s afew others to thank but those are the main ones.

I could trace it back to Green Day's Dookie in 2nd grade, but that's like tracing me back to Adam.

NFG and Blink 182!!!! Enema of the State, Take off your pants and jacket, NFG self -titled, and Sticks and Stones are the four most important albums released to me and if Mutiny! by Set Your Goals came out in early 2000's, you could put that album in there too.

in the order i discovered them and what they did for me

Jimmy Eat World - First artist I actually listened to beyond 1 or 2 songs
Underoath's TOCS - Didn't know music could sound like this, or that I would like it
Thursday's Full Collapse - Just a complete album all the way through, i don't know if i'll ever get tired of it.
Sunny Day Real Estate's Diary - Sounded like nothing I'd ever heard before, got me to like JEW's earlier stuff and Indie Emo in general.
Envy - The pinnacle of music - hardcore, beautiful post-rock, unintelligible lyrics you can attach to anything going on in your life, what more could you ask for?

Unfortunately, until the age of about 7, I was listening to Top 40 Radio Hits. When I moved to Arizona and made new friends, they showed me a bunch of this horrible metalcore that I thought was really good (i.e. Atreyu, Trivium and whatnot). I pretty muched worked from there.

Oddly enough, Thursday (Full Collapse) and Fall Out Boy (Take This to Your Grave). I was fourteen the year Full Collapse was released, and it was the first album that truly intrigued me to the point of discovering more music in that vain, as well as prompting me to go see local shows. TTtYG was released when I was 16, right after my first "real" (by high school standards) breakup, and inspired me to "get active in the scene" and pursue music with greater furor. These two albums fostered in a love for the medium.

Now I'm 21 and my taste in music has changed and expanded radically, but I'll always be indebted to these respective albums for getting to to care about the medium of music to such an extent.

During my 5th grade class trip, a then-friend of mine let me listen to "One" by Metallica. My life changed ever since that day. Then, in 7th grade, a friend of mine introduced me to Rancid, via the songs "Maxwell Murder" and "Axiom". Somehow, that led to me discovering emo, and that led me into indie and post-hardcore :shrugs:
