I just bought myself a 20G iPod and I noticed that when I look at the "available capacity" reading it only says 18.5G...and that's without importing any songs. Is there something wrong with my iPod, shouldn't it say 20G available? I don't know much about the product, are there pre-loaded things on the iPod that reduces the overall capacity? If you know the answer, please tell me so I can return it if I have to. Thanks.

It's fine. It probably needs memory to have the menus and such.

Dont return it they are all like that. The OS for the ipod takes up space on the drive along with the other applications it has. I have a 15 gig. and it only has 13.8 gig of space for music. They just round up cause saying its an 18.5 gig ipod sounds weird.
18.6 gigabytes = 20,000,000,000 bytes
They SAY gigabyte and use the conversion of
1 giga = 1000 mega = 1000,000 kilo = 1000,000,000 bytes
which is because most people don't know shit about computer memory
a kilobyte is actualyl equal to 1024 bytes (and a megabyte is 1024 kilobytes, and so one)
Thats why it seems off.

oh, and that's just funny... you think it would take 1.5 gigs for menus on an IPOD???
lmfao

Your iPod has a block installed so you can't put shitty music on it. This includes all the bands you like.
