ha. what's driving me crazy is song of the year (or something...something that has to do with writing) john mayer is nominated for "daughters". that really came out of left field. not that its a bad song. its just really recent and plus i thought that album came out last year...

according to grammy "rules", if the producer thing wins they dont accept or go up or anything, so it doesnt really count.

Seriously though... "The Reason" is nominated for song of the year? When that song came out, I noticed how basic, simple, and all around cliched the song was... yet it's considered one of the top five best written songs in the past year. Also... one of the the record of the year noms is "Let's Get It Started"... grant it it's a catchy party song and all, but do people really know the actual version has them singing about how getting drunk/high associates their state of mind with the attitudes and behavior of mentally retarded individials? That's just downright ridiculous. But yea, conrats to Green Day with mulitple noms, not to mention the Killers and Modest Mouse.

How can you congratulate Green Day and the Killers and put down "The Reason" in the same post? Do you honestly think that Green Day and the Killers have musical talent? Granted, The Killers added in a lot of synth and they set themselves apart a bit, but Green Day basically INVENTED cliche pop-punk.
As a group, they produce music that is pleasant to the ears, but for that matter, so does Simple Plan and Good Charlotte. What sets Green Day apart from them? Because they started the trend? Or is it because they make the songs seven minutes long? (because obviously that makes you a superior musician). Is it because Green Day is political? I'd really like to know.
I guess it's just "scene" to like Green Day but hate everything else that sounds just like them.

I agree to some degree. Like you said, I think Greenday got these nominations because their music is somewhat politically influenced. But there is no question that "The Reason" is simplistic, and Greenday deserves nominations much more than that song does. See the thing is, Green Day started it, you're right, they're the original. Thats why people always complain about bands who try to sound like them. Those bands aren't being innovative and new, they're being unoriginal and boring, and frankly, who wants to hear that? Not me.

the grammys just prove my point that the current state of music is horrendous. Bands r out there producing amazing music and getting no respect from the "music experts" while the black eyed peas and hoobastank r getting nominated for multiple grammy awards. "The most fundamental problem right now with music is money and the mediocrity it produces."

I'm excited for Green Day, they definitely deserve this...
Even if American Idiot was a bit of a lackluster album. :)
I hate people giving the band props for making such a political statement when they had two songs out of thirteen that remotely touched upon anything political. American Idiot is not a political album and apparently people are too stupid to realize this.

First of all Eminem's new cd is garbage. Second of all the idea that you're even entertaining the idea that his new CD was as good or even better that College Dropout makes your opinions invalid.
Emimen's new CD isn't garbage....its just not his best work. I still like it a lot but I liked the Eminem Show and the Marshall Mathers LP better. Kanye's CD is amazing and he deserves the 10 Grammy nominations he got.
Damn...10 nominations, that would suck if he didn't even win one.

Honestly, I am happy for green day, but like someone said before, their song is just as simplistic as the hoobastank song. Just because you dont like a song doesnt mean its not a good song, just not to you. Alot of very innovative bands make very simplistic music. I'm not saying green day doesnt deserve what their getting and im not saying hoobastank is innovative but they are good musicians and they deserve to be nominated. I do think its kinda funny how you guys complain about hoobastank or the black eyed peas but if matchbook romance or fallout boy happened to be up there you'd all be pissing your pants. Again, I'm not knocking mbr or fallout boy, i love those guys, I'd probably be pissing myself too, but dont say just because a song is simple or you think it sucks that it doesnt deserve a grammy nomination.

[QUOTE=Trademark797]Honestly, I am happy for green day, but like someone said before, their song is just as simplistic as the hoobastank song.
I like both songs but the reason is WAY MORE simplistic than american idiot. Instrumentally wise any beginner can play that song and the lyrics are very cliche. Now i still like the song but american idiot has a lot more intellectual lyrics and is something green day have taken a big step forward with. The two are nowhere near each other in originality, progress, and complexity.

Hello?
Joe Strummer & Johnny Cash for "Redemption Song"?
This site wouldn't exist had it not been for Joe Strummer.
I kinda have to laugh at most of the "are you on the right website" comments. There are a LOT of talented bands that are pushed by this site, that's why I come here. Just because I don't think pop-punk = talent doesn't mean I'm at the wrong site.
And honestly, I've listened to the whole Green Day album, and I think "The Reason", however simplistic it is, is a better song than any of Green Day's... If not for any other reason than the fact that Hoobastank's singer... can sing.
And it's wonderful to invent a genre... people say that Green Day and Nirvana were revolutionary, and they were, but they weren't that talented. It's cool to start off as a pop-punk band playing the same progressions over and over again, but after you've done it for two albums, it's time to learn to play your instruments...

You don't need to be talented, thats the thing. The fact that they can do so much with so little is incredible. The Ramones had almost no talent, but look what they did with it, played 2,262 shows. Same goes for the majority of old punk bands, they didn't have talent, but that is the beauty of it. They did so much with what they had, that's why they're revolutionary, that's why people idolize them, because they're the everyman, not some rock star who sits there trying to blow people away. And I'm not a huge Nirvana fan, I think they're good and thats all, but Dave Grohl is one of the most talented musicians of our generation, whether or not you want to admit it. And not only do I think "The Reason" is overrated, but its watered-down, its boring, cliche, and doesn't come close to any of those Green Day songs. And as far as the instruments are concerned, that is the one of the first drum beats you are taught when you learn to play drums, there is nothing special about the guitar or bass lines, and the lyrics and vocals are medicore at best and probably wouldn't be that good if it weren't for a little something called Pro Tools, so yeah, I think I'm done.

i can't say much about the other categories, but for the rock categories, none of the bands nominated should be nominated except maybe modest mouse. The new green day is their worst cd yet. dear everyone,
green day did not invent pop punk. just because they were the first punk band you heard does not mean they invented the sound.
I am not trying to put down the band. do they deserve popularity? yes. they write catchy, decent songs. do they deserve awards? no. they have done nothing recently to progress music in any of its forms. this doesn't make their music bad, just not worthy of a grammy. of course the grammys are usually a popularity contest, so i guess they do deserve to win.

After reading most of these post all I can do is shake my head. If you're going to go on a high-minded rant about Green Day and then say their new album is bad, you have no credibility. American Idiot is quite a good pop-punk CD involving a lot more than most ever do. Name dropping earlier bands doesn't give you credibility if you can't decipher what good music is today. It's easy to know what music was good in the past; it's not nearly as easy to wade through all of today's bands though. Also, if you think you're so above everyone in taste and make statements like rap sucks, you really don't know much about music, especially underground music.

Um, please tell me you know who the Descendents are, but based on your post I assume you don't.
i was just giving one example. obviously the descendents are a huge influence in the creation of pop-punk as well as a lot of bands like social d ect.... everyone seems to think green day created pop-punk but all i was saying is the offspring should get some credit as well. smash, in my opinion, did just as much to pop-punk today as dookie did

If Hatebreed wins a grammy I'm going to stop playing music all together.

Did you happen to catch Hoobastanks performance at the MTV video awards? ... what an excellent vocal performance.
He had one bad show...It happens. Obviously he can hit the notes if the song has been recorded. That's a hard song to sing. Bert from the used also has a lot of notes that are hard to hit in their songs. When they're live most of the time he will scream them instead of singing them. Doug could'nt do that because the reason is a ballad. The Used never plays Greener With The Scenery live for this reason. Towards the end of the song there is a really really hard note to hit. It's not as easy as it seems.

Just 'cause you hear it on an album doesn't mean he actually hit the notes there cowboy.

Not to sound like an ass, but I can sing that song in my sleep...it's hardly a difficult song to sing.

Its a little thing called "studio magic" homeboy. And everytime ive seen the used they have played on my own, which is a "balldad" so to speak, and bert has no problem hitting those notes.

doug purposely has the audience sing that high part all the time though...take the pepsi smash performance...it's not just one bad show--it's his voice

uh. that's a bold statement. not denying his importance, but...he didn't create punk/emo all by himself.
True, Malcom McLaren created punk with the Sex Pistols, but they were gone by what, '78? No other British punk band would have, or could have carried the punk flag beyond there. Had their been no Clash, the punk music scene would be drastically different, today. If it would even exist at all.
