Limiting what should be constituted as the "greatest albums of all time" to five selections is a disservice to the luminary albums that have come to define and evolve the medium.

Agreed. Even though I already replied to this thread, I think it is a disservice in general to proclaim any album as "greatest ever". Its all subjective. blah blah blah

Why this one over the other great Dylan records?
landmark album in his career & in folk/roots music. the album really showed the evolution of music was nigh. popular (not "pop") music came to mean more than hook-laden love songs/singles, the audience gained a new consciousness of societal issues. the concept of an album was finally being bought to a larger audience rather than singles reliance. even though this album almost reads as a greatest hits, easily containing some of his best songs. & when you have a discography the size of dylan's, that's a pretty big deal haha
just look at the opening song, one of the greatest & most powerful ever written, bringing upon so much impact throughout & beyond musical circles. it helped inspire a generation to act upon belief & ultimately fight for change, providing a voice & means of communication between all people/barriers. same could be said for a few songs here, the album closer is another perfect example, probably even on a larger scale. dylan set the standard for topical songwriters & political poets with this album. i reckon this album is finally being recognized as one of his best too (in comparison to blonde on blonde & highway 61 revisited), & it's about time. these protest songs remain eternally relevant. not to say his other works don't, but besides the two covers (or co-writes, or whatever), i think this remains his strongest album & bought about so much more than just a shift in music & musical influence (/the change to more introspective & socially aware lyrics in a mainstream realm), but almost changed the social conscious for an entire generation

Pretty much what I was expecting in terms of the reasons. It was just odd to see Freewheelin' placed above his folk-rock material when the two big ones are praised to no end (don't get me wrong, I love them both). and my normal subjective choice, Underoath - Lost in the Sound of Separation
landmark album in his career & in folk/roots music. the album really showed the evolution of music was nigh. popular (not "pop") music came to mean more than hook-laden love songs/singles, the audience gained a new consciousness of societal issues. the concept of an album was finally being bought to a larger audience rather than singles reliance. even though this album almost reads as a greatest hits, easily containing some of his best songs. & when you have a discography the size of Underoath's, that's a pretty big deal haha
just look at the opening song, one of the greatest & most powerful ever written, bringing upon so much impact throughout & beyond musical circles. it helped inspire a generation to act upon belief & ultimately fight for change, providing a voice & means of communication between all people/barriers. same could be said for a few songs here, the album closer is another perfect example, probably even on a larger scale. dylan set the standard for topical songwriters & political poets with this album. i reckon this album is finally being recognized as one of his best too (in comparison to Their Only Chasing Safety & DTGL), & it's about time. these protest songs remain eternally relevant. not to say his other works don't, but besides the two covers (or co-writes, or whatever), i think this remains his strongest album & bought about so much more than just a shift in music & musical influence (/the change to more introspective & socially aware lyrics in a mainstream realm), but almost changed the social conscious for an entire generation
Underoath - Lost in the Sound of Separation
i don't know you, so it's hard to tell if you're taking the piss or not. but it's a "greatest albums of all time" thread. if any of the picks are really in contention, then a bit of discussion is probably warranted mate?
Underoath - Lost in the Sound of Separation
Underoath - Lost in the Sound of Separation is a great album bollox
I agree.
Pretty much what I was expecting in terms of the reasons. It was just odd to see Lost in the Sound placed above their folk-rock material when the two big ones are praised to no end (don't get me wrong, I love them both). Hell, Reinventing Your Exit even inspired Spencer to start doing coke so one would be hard pressed to argue against your post haha.

but i like a lot of things too.

We have not evolved over the last 40 years, our brains still work in the same way... it's not like the lyrics are less relatable from back then. Either users could vote, or the staff would make their own would suit me. I just think that it would be interesting to see what would actually make it and what wouldn't.

too bad the social conditions that create our minds have changed in the past 40 years, rendering your point (in the way that you argued it) moot.
We are still feeling the same emotions we did 40 years ago. The only difference is the way people are choosing to display them. Lyrics talk about emotions on the inside. Unless people are translating lyrics as the literal definition of the words, they should be able to relate just as much to music from the 60s as current music.

Oh, it'd be great if you could clarify what was meant by this then:
basically, what i'm saying is...
in context to music, am i suppose to feel the same urgency and demand that the audience felt when those songs were put out?
the answer is yes and no.
yes, i def. am still saying "i can sell my body is i wanna, 'cause god knows you already sold yr mind!".
but i'm also saying, i want to hear something from someone in my generation, my time of youth, that is talking to me.
kathleen hanna was singing to a completely different audience with completely different viewpoints. you had a different scene going on then. "grunge/alternative" was the in thing. indie rock and punk were becoming mainstream rock.
now, today, you can hear independent/punk rock/indie rock music on the radio, not just college stations. things are different.
you can argue that it's still the same and maybe some of it is...but it's a completely different generation.
fuck, do you think this generation is really exactly like that of the 60's? or even the 90's?
'cause i just don't.
i don't need music to feel relevant. that's not what i was saying.
i'm just saying, i want to hear bands now, TODAY, that are saying something about now. talking about the present.

kathleen hanna was singing to a completely different audience with completely different viewpoints. you had a different scene going on then. "grunge/alternative" was the in thing. indie rock and punk were becoming mainstream rock.
The messages put forth then can remain both poignant and relevant now despite this change. Sure, there was a different scene then. Fact remains that what is being asserted through lyrics is always subject to interpretation and as a listener, it is your prerogative to twist the words as you see fit. Ergo songs from before "your time" can be just as compelling to you in 2008 as they were to audiences of decades past.
now, today, you can hear independent/punk rock/indie rock music on the radio, not just college stations. things are different.
Ok?
fuck, do you think this generation is really exactly like that of the 60's? or even the 90's?
What? There is no need for society to remain static in order for you to find older songs relatable or interesting. It's not like "living is easy with eyes closed" are no longer effective words because it isn't 1967. As Kearn touched upon earlier, music from the 60's is considered timeless due to the enduring time-tested messages conveyed.
i don't need music to feel relevant. that's not what i was saying.
My mistake, you formulated your thought strangely.
i'm just saying, i want to hear bands now, TODAY, that are saying something about now. talking about the present.
To reiterate, past work can still be germane to your present life. Are all lyrics immune to being dated or antiquated? Of course not. However, you seem to be discounting their possible pertinence to your existence. Verges on lionizing ephemeral art and casting everything else aside on the basis of supposed irrelevance. It's quite frankly an unfortunate way to enjoy music.

Yes.
Oh.

it's not that i don't relate to music from other times or don't find it interesting or love it. shit, sonic youth are one of my all time favorite band and i still feel excited when i hear such songs as "teen age riot" and so forth.
but like i said...i want to hear music that is talking about right now. here. the present.
it's not that i don't find music from eras such as the 60's irrelevant, but i just want to hear new songs, new bands.
besides, can you honestly tell me that young adults can relate to going to san fran with flowers in their hair? if people are still living their life in that song, that's not only ridiculous, but somewhat, i think harmful. you can't just go run around with anyone, flower in yr hair, taking lsd, and thinking the world is going to be or is a better place...that's escapism, not reality.
and not only that, i don't know anyone who can honestly relate to songs from the 50's that are all about being squeaky clean and square. that's also not a reality. not to say that every band or singer or musician today is making relevant music (ie Britney Spears and the majority of pop music or even dance music today).

The best music from the 90's and early is still relevant, that's why it's survived. Stuff like Bob Dylan is just as relevant as any music made today.
i'm not saying it's not relevant at all, goddmanit. haha.
i'm saying i want to hear bands/music today that talks about the present. or atleast are doing something new or trying to create something new.
arghhhh.
it's a yes and no answer.
yes, you can relate to a lot of things and it's still relevant, but there is also stuff that isn't.

But most modern bands say things that aren't relevant or I disagree with. Most bands write song after song about women and having never been dumped it's not at all relevant to me but that doesn't mean I won't listen.
I can barely think of a song I've ever heard in my life that is really relevant to my life.
If it's groundbreaking music you're looking for then you'll find a lot more of it in the past than in modern day music and most modern day groundbreaking bands are bands like Boris, Kayo Dot or Battles who are just fucking weird and while good have nothing at all to say.
Seriously name me some new bands that have something genuinely interesting and fresh to say with their music that any normal person couldn't think for themselves.
Good music is something that plays on your emotions. What you're looking for is much better found in literature.
Even in literature, there is nothing completely original  Unless you mean a new way of saying something, then maybe...

I suppose in some cases in depends on the music you like...but...
a few bands that I'm def. interested in right now that are saying something that i'm really relating to..
the gossip - an update on riot grrrl basically. but discussing such things like weight oppression, queer oppression, and such things like girl vs girl mentality. you might not like them, but i quite enjoy them.
a silver mt. zion - efrim writes from the bottom of his heart. his voice is so raw and so...soulful. their newest album he questions the point that musicians/artists are trying to say now and if it means anything really.
that's two. there are plenty of others. but a few.
as far as battles go, i can't stand battles. i like instrumental music just fine, but they're so boring. and boris...boris is just noise to me. and i like a lot of noise/noise rock that have had something interesting to say about society.
i don't know, i understand what you are saying, i'm just saying...
it's time for something new. i want something new. i don't know...maybe i'm just "naive".
and as far as literature goes, i am a writer myself, so i do read a lot.
but most people feel that such writers like chuck p. are fucking groundbreaking and say all this interesting stuff.
myself, i find such writers as allen ginsberg and william s. burroughs more relevant to me than anything new.
so, when it comes to books and such, yah, i go back to other generations and eras. i barely like any new writers/authors today.
except maybe laurie weeks.

oh my god...
are you blind?
i'm not talking about "queer(s)" in context to being derogatory or mean, seeing that being "queer" and being "gay" are kinda two very different things.
for the record, i am talking about queer like queer theory, genderqueer, genderfuck...
and also i do identify as queer, just saying.
so, get off your high horse and stop assuming that i'm some young, dumb punk who is just trying to be offensive.
if words like "******" and "queer" do offend you, i'm sorry. that's you though. not me. i'm all about taking back these words that others would like to try and used against "you".
No, please educate me on queer theology and gay theory. Please. That'd be rich.
That said, you introduced the roles of gender, sexuality and, the rather lame "I know more gay people who like Thrice than Metallica, what does that say about you" comment. What does that have to do with this conversation at all?

You introduced relevance into the discussion. I merely followed up on it.
i'm saying i want to hear bands/music today that talks about the present.
You want songwriting to be overtly current?
or atleast are doing something new or trying to create something new.
This is a tall order. You'd be better off hoping for bands that do what they do (which isn't necessarily innovative) really well.

Some share this sentiment regarding music.
but like i said...i want to hear music that is talking about right now. here. the present.
As I stated before, the beauty of art lies in interpretation. Field hollers and work songs can be just as pertinent to your life as any new music.
besides, can you honestly tell me that young adults can relate to going to san fran with flowers in their hair? if people are still living their life in that song, that's not only ridiculous, but somewhat, i think harmful. you can't just go run around with anyone, flower in yr hair, taking lsd, and thinking the world is going to be or is a better place...that's escapism, not reality.
Not every single song in the history of music is still relatable. With that being said, there is no need to rely solely on current acts if you want songs that assess the here and the now. Many messages aired by older music remain applicable today.

I'll bite. Since this is I'm guessing not for "favorites", then I'll try and list only very influential albums...
Robert Johnson - King of the Delta Blues Singers
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
Iggy Pop and the Stooges - Raw Power
Slick Rick - The Great Adventures Of...
Bob Marley - Exodus
Planet Rock probably deserves the spot more than Slick Rick... but I honestly don't like Planet Rock that much.
Personal preference aside, Slick Rick's work has not even a fraction of the influential, subversive impact Planet Rock did on Hip Hop. Not trying to be that guy, but never would a Slick Rick album deserve a spot on a Top 5 greatest albums of all time list.

Slick Rick's Greatest Adventures of is the most sampled hip hop album of all time, thus why I picked it. And as I said, you're right. Planet Rock was more important, I just ddin't pick it due to my personal dislike for it. In retrospect, I probably should've given the spot to Paid in Full.

brand new - the devil and god are raging inside me
say anything - in defense of the genre
neutral milk hotel - aeroplane over the sea
mewithoutYou - brother, sister
anberlin - cities
for me at least.

Kind Of Blue isn't the greatest jazz album ever either, nor is it Miles' best.

WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?
queen theory? gay theology?
i said QUEER THEORY.
and if you don't understand or get sarcasm with the whole Metallica thing, that's on you.
there was also no mention of thrice, either.
you obviously have no clue what i've been saying or what i've even talking about.
you just got your little panties in a bunch because i said queer when you obviously have no clue what i'm even talking about when i say "queer".
