So im at college and me and my roommates have a pretty awesome system in our living room including a nice receiver, a new Sony record player, and a bunch of speakers all over the room. The problem is that when we play records i can't get the volume to go above speaking volume. I figure that I need some kind of amplifier for a record player or i have it hooked up to my receiver improperly. Anyone have any idea what's up?

you need a receiver w/ phonograph inputs or get a preamp for the record player.

You need a preamp. Unless your stereo system has a dedicated phono setting (most newer stereos don't) then it doesn't push out enough power to run a turntable. Check some electronic stores and maybe you might be able to find something. Or try amazon.com, I seem to remember there being quite a few on there.
