MxPx – A/C EP

Score: 3/5

MxPx has been a band for 12 years. Yeah, crazy I know. And to celebrate that 12 years they’ve released their new DVD: B-Movie, along with a little bonus acoustic EP. Throughout the DVD Mike mentions that, “MxPx isn’t really known for their acousticness.” That pretty much sums up this EP.

With two old songs turned acoustic, and three new songs, this EP was a treat for any die-hard MxPx fan. For me it was nothing special. I’ve heard better from MxPx, and I’ve heard better from acoustic EP’s… which seem to be the new trend of pop-punk bands as of late.

The CD opens up with “Grey Skies Turn Blue,” and upbeat, sappy, sing-a-long song. Following that is “The Silver Screen” which is a movie in a song according to Mike. This song was somewhat of a different style from MxPx. Piano, and slow tempo and what seems like an epic chorus, something you might hear during the credits of a movie for example. “Invitation to Understanding” was an acoustic remake of an old song. Which really should’ve stayed the way it was. I didn’t like much out of this song, except for the added violin, which added a little artsy flare to it. “Where Will We Go” had to be the standout track on the EP, if any. Keeping it short and simple (1:33) and using that signature MxPx style. The last song, and the most recent in our ears, “Quit Your Life” really exposes Mike’s extremely nasally voice that kind of tainted this CD for me. It honestly sounds like Mike couldn’t breathe through his nose on this song. Minus that, it’s still a good, slowed down acoustic version of this song from their latest album.

I don’t think this is a bad record, but I surely don’t think it’s anything amazing either as far acoustic EP’s go. If you like MxPx, then you’ll wanna be sure to get this DVD + EP. If not for the EP, at least for the DVD because it does feature some awesome live footage from shows in Seattle’s Graceland last September and a lot of funny and interesting things about the band’s history and the recording of the A/C EP. Not a fan of MxPx? Then this EP won’t change your mind.
