Oberst definitely has lyrics and prestige over Kevin. He's truely unique and has influenced far more artists than Kevin has. No one can be compared to him.

But, there's a certain charm and innocence in Kevin's music that Conor is missing. The fact that fewer people know about him adds to his appeal, and makes him more relatable, too, i think. (having met him once, I'd say he's probably a lot more down to earth and friendly than Conor seems to be.) And, in my eyes, he is yet to write a bad song. (exluding both of their first albums. :-) )

So, i guess it really just depends on my mood. I chose Conor.

I'm a huge Bright Eyes fan but I voted Kevin Devine. He's way better live and i think his new album is going to blow people's minds. I still love Conor but his Cassadaga and Mystic Valley were both a little disappointing.

I'm ok with Conor winning this poll, I'm just glad Mr. Devine is putting up a good showing.

okay ive made a decision. split the country, split the street is musically better than anything conor oberst has ever written, and put your ghosts to rest has proven that kevin lyrically rivals conor as well, so i choose kevin.

plus i just saw kevin live (his vocal performance was flawless and he added some great adlibs to his lyrics throughout) and i met him (seriously the nicest guy you could ever meet) so that sways my opinion toward him as well haha.

i agree with all of this, especially the bolded. i would just add that conor is only slightly above kevin lyrically, i mean kevin's always been a smooth writer with a good mix of what is metaphorical and what is blunt and what contains imagery etc. etc., and the solidity of PYGTR's lyrics narrowed the gap between the two writers dramatically.
