Somewhat of an interesting article...kind of a hypocritical message from the Pope if you ask me. Might make for good discussion...thoughts?

Interesting article, though (as a Catholic) I'd have to disagree that knowledge has created its own modern idols. I believe that knowledge and faith easily coincide.

I couldn't care less about what this man has to say. But I do agree that it is very hypocritical.

I dont find it hypocritical at all. With the way countries have been operating the last few decades, he couldnt be more right.

Salvation comes at a high price, hasn't anyone seen how many time Jesus has been gilded in Catholic churches?

Random fact.

My grandma got me a charm of St. Michael the Archangel which she got blessed by the pope.

Yes, I'm Catholic.

Considering the Vatican is the wealthiest landowner in the world and probably one of the most powerful non-government organizations...I would recommend he refer to Jesus' definition of a hypocrite.

He also uses that power to influence governments and do a lot of good in the world as well. Its not like hes just sitting on his ass making people kiss his feet.

The Catholic Church/Vatican isnt't the richest institution in the world. And I really hope you're referring to John Paul II.

That's debatable. You'd have to factor original art works by people like Michaelangelo and Carvaggio - works that could be auctioned off for millions today - and statues made from gold or silver. Their wealth also includes immense lands and real estate investments. Regardless of rank, it's a billion-dollar industry ($17.7 in FY 2002).

Do you know how many pieces of property the church own? Land, art, statues, and the Vatican itself. The whole city is a historical priceless piece of architecture littered with tons of statues and pieces of art. Bernini's, Michaelangelo's, Da Vinci's, Reni's, Caravaggio's....I could go on.

And while I disagree with a lot of John Paul's ideals, he modernized the church however.

I don't know what to make of this. I mean, if they didn't purchase those artifacts or land and it was given/inherited to them I don't see why people point to this as "bad" rich. If my family has an house/estate passed down to every generation in a downtown area of city and it was a really pretty house, then of course, over time, it is going to be a very expensive house. Obviously, the Vatican has a somewhat a long history so what do you expect? At the same time, I don't know every single detail about it, and this is what I think.

No, and neither do you. Granted the Vatican is wealthy I highly doubt its the wealthiest institution in the world. Either way, the current pope is an idiot and hypocrite though this article IMO.

And just to clear things up Pope John Paul and Pope John Paul II are two different people.

Well, there are the Catholic Churches across the world, the Vatican, the Summer Palaces, the numerous other operations they have around the world, and all the paintings. Of course I don't have numbers. Also, consider the fact they take donations every time a mass is held, the money is constantly filtered in and the Vatican...

And I'm aware, I'm clearly talking about the II.

Its something like they make 450 billion a year. And for comparison I think the US is something like 15 trillion, give or take a few trillion.

Also, what are the Summer Palaces and why is it treated as a proper noun? Sorry, I've "been Catholic" my whole life and have never heard this term.
