I don't think he is, but I just wanted to protect some poor kid from saying it by showing what will happen to them, there's always one.

I'm taking one for the team :-)

It's because he knows how to use the effects to his advantage. He knows what they can do, when to use them, when not to use them, and to what extent to use them. A mistake that many guitarists make is that they over-do something and don't realize their limitations. The Edge is very good at knowing his limits.

Someone'sCoat

Clapton is my favorite. You can't really pinpoint a certain guitarist as the best ever though.

El_Jeffe
09/14/08, 05:38 PM
the edge gets a lot of crap for using so many effects pedals etc etc. but the thing about him is that he's managed to create a sound on the guitar that is uniquely his. despite the number of times his style has been bastardized by many of those that have proceeded him, he managed to do what so little guitarists (regardless of technical capability) have managed to do & define a style all of his own

Dave Knudson from Minus the Bear is pretty good with the effects pedals. Not the best ever, but very creative. Hendrix is obviously up there as well.
I haven't seen Eric Clapton mentioned yet. EDIT: Nevermind, yes he was.

the modern king of slide guitar, he's really something alright. his last album with his band, songlines, is a beauty. he receives a lot of praise for the work, but his band is definitely on par with him, especially the bass player

but there's so many guitarists to pick from. i mean chuck berry, "guitar" watson, b.b. king, the tinariwen boys, django reinhardt, wes montgomery, etc. where do you draw the line?

I'll definatly have to look into him more then. Right now I'm trying to get into some Chet Atkins but I have the time.

I agree. There's no way you can pick the best guitarist "ever". There's simply too many different styles even within one genre. And then if you take into account all genres of music then it just becomes even more pointless.

I learned a riff from a Ted Leo song, then I did some stuff with an Eagles song. Just want some more ideas on it since I'm pretty much teaching myself to fingerpick. My guitar teacher isn't too good at it.

i gotta go with John Mayer. he's the bomb. not the greatest soloist, but he knows how to write songs. Continuum is nothing but gold. He's the ultimate rhythm guitarist, and a pretty good soloist as well.
Throw in the fact that he is a logical speaker when he's talking about celebrity issues, and the fact that he is down to earth. I know that doesn't affect his guitar playing, but i still think he's legit.

Tom Morello has a sound that is unheard of anywhere else. He does not use technology to his advantage and his guitar is basic and simple. Slash's sound can be found in almost any late 80's hair metal band solos. Slash has one sound Tom's got funk, jazz, punk, hip hop, heavy metal influences in his sound that gives him a board range. When you listen to rage you hear so many different sounds come out of that man its insane. trying to duplacte it is very hard. but for Slash once you have heard November rain or welcome to the jungle you have heard it all from him.

I honestly wouldn't say hendrix was the best. One of the most original and influential (yes), but play skill wise... Just go to youtube and search for the best guitarist ever. You will get some ridiculous metal guys who can sweep pick faster than anyone can think.

Thomas Erek from Fall of troy is pretty fucking good. Hes really fast.
Out of stuff that I've heard, I would say Omar is the one of the best. All around.

The Great Kat (see http://www.greatkat.com/) is also amazing at the guitar. I've only listened to her two or three times, but her recordings are insane. For anyone who hasn't heard of her, she's this guitar virtuoso who graduated from Juilliard. and if we're gonna go really modern, tom from powerspace knows how to make a good riff, although it isnt evident by their debut album.

there are so many more that deserve to be mentioned, but those are my three
I have trouble believing that a guitarist in a FBR powerpop band is the best guitarist ever.

The ratio of Alexes to non-Alexes in this band is frankly stunning.
FBR loooooves Alexes. Powerspace, The Cab, Cobra Starship, and Phantom Planet all have them. God forbid All Time Low ever leaves Hopeless.

There are differnet ways to say that someone is the greatest guitar player "ever." You all seem to be judgeing them on their techincal ability. That basicly means solos and things that easily impress non-guitar players. Jugdeing it like that, I would also say Hendrix. I would also say Kurt Cobain, Billie Joe Armstrong and Johhny Ramone are amazing guitar players. Not on techical ability, but on creativity, even if its just with power chords. Jonnhy recorded 14 albums with the Ramones. And 97% of those songs are nothing but power chords, but they are all unique and great in some way. Try wrting that many songs with just power-chords and make them all unique, memorable, and have thier own character. Thats what Kurt did and Billie does today too, they've added solos and things like that but its still all power-chord based songs.

I don't want to get into it because its a totally differnet subject, but have you seen the way Jonnhy strummed?? That is also somthing to pay attention to.

This is called "songwriting". I'm pretty sure there's a "best songwriter" thread somewhere on this board. IMO being the "best" at your instrument is basically impossible and is a completely subjective thing... but if you could somehow accurately measure who the best was, it would include both technical ability and songwriting, among other things.

("Best" is silly, so I'm operating within the assumption that we mean "favorite.)

Surprised no one ever said Kevin Shields. Assuming usage of effects, etc., fall under being a "guitarist," he's probably my favorite. As unpopular as he is these days, I'm also a big fan of The Edge. I tend to be more interested in songs than in instrumental parts when I listen to music, though, so talking about favorite guitarists, drummers, etc., isn't something I'm particularly into.

The Edge is awesome. He's even more awesome when you hear him play without so many effects - sometimes he overdos them.

my post in this thread was going to say "nobody mentioned kevin shields? you guys are all idiots."

I'm sorry dudes, yngwie or some shitty tooth and nail metalcore dude might be able to shred but Kevin Shields did shit in the 90s that people are JUST NOW catching up to. everyone of those shredders usually gets topped within a couple years by someone else.

My favorite is probably Peter Buck (R.E.M.). He never seems to come up when these types of discussions take place, but his style is so inimitable and he always plays for the song despite the fact that he's as good as any of his flashier contemporaries. He had basically just started playing and only knew a few chords when they recorded Murmur, and people have been trying to copy that sound ever since. He's the model of a tasteful guitarist.
