These are some of my favorite bands. Ambient, experimental, unique (for the most part), intricate... Just good music to listen to.
This will Destroy you (I started with the best) - If you haven't heard TWDY, you really should give it a chance. It's honestly some of the best music I've ever heard
Explosions in the Sky (of course) - Anyone will tell you this. Explosions is one of the best ambient bands. I've always felt the recordings are a little rough, I can't really help but to love the music they make.
The Album leaf
Battles
Circa Survive
Boards of Canada
Lanterna
Efterklang (really Odd)
The Mercury Program
Mogwai
Tristeza
As Cities Burn
Pompeii
Glider
Some of it more ambient than others, but if you life good unique music, you should give any of these a try
the album leaf and circa survive are awesome ill def check those out

You're an idiot. Boards of Canada is the only band I would consider even close to ambient up there.

All of these bands have ambient features to them. Just because not every song isn't one guitar, one note, 30 minutes long doesnt mean they are not ambient you 15 year fuck. Pick up a cd.
Great list!
I miss The Mars Volta though : experimental, unique and ,at least on the first albums, ambient. But I guess ppl already know they are out there anyways.

Ulrich Schnauss, Hammock, El Ten Eleven, Giants, Godspeed You Black Emperor, and Aerostatic all share similar qualities to some of the bands you mentioned.
The best experimental/instrumental/ambient album I have ever heard is BT's "This Binary Universe." Trumps all other albums in similar genres, imo.

Disturbing lack of M83 and Helios for an ambient thread.

I say yes and no to M83. There are undeniable ambient songs in their catalog, but I would argue that the small majority of their songs are not ambient. But their mentioning is definitely warranted.

You should all be ashamed for not listing The Lymbyc Systym. Actually... if were talking about ACTUAL ambient music...listen to a Steve Roach record. And where's good old Eno? He invented the genre.
Absolutely great call with This Will Destroy You though. Seen them numerous times. You should check out the guitarists side project Mosh Patrol. Orgasmic.

If you guys like the stuff I'll send it to you for free seeing as we dumped these tracks. Just let us know what you think. I'm def going to check out some of these bands you recommended too!
