The best indie labels are so indie, they don't even exist.

Jagjaguwar currently has my attention (Bon Iver, Ladyhawk, Okkervil River), but indie-powerhouse Merge is a perennial favorite (...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead, the Arcade Fire, Caribou, Connor Oberst, Destroyer, Dinosaur Jr., The Magnetic Fields, Richard Buckner, She & Him, Spoon, Teenage Fanclub, M. Ward) and boasts a very formidable roster of artists.

I was going to say Jagjaguwar solely for Okkervil River, but now that I know Bon Iver is on there, they have to be listed as one of the best.

Okay, people's been asking me the correct definition to describe indie music.
What is it exactly?

theguy77
09/16/08, 02:00 PM
apparently there is no way to describe the sound of indie music because it applies to only a band's business state, which has no correlation to the band's intentions, capabilities, or preferences whatsoever so its really just a fucking meaningless term, which would be better off as a genre name.

just puting my 27 cents in.

I pay my own bills, does that make me indie?

theguy77

I pay my own bills, does that make me indie?

if i selectively chose bands with certain restrictions on their business capabilities just to assess my stance of anti-capitalism, and with a complete disregard to the case by case basis of what is good, honest music and what is not, would that make me indie?

Wow. I forgot all about Merge. And while name checking half their roster you forgot Imperial Teen. So I guess we're even?

Another one I forgot about and just now remembered... Polyvinyl. I'm pretty surprised to not see them mentioned here.
