Head to the replies for a statement from John Nolan of Straylight Run (http://straylightrun.com) about an incident that happened at a recent Oklahoma show involving a guy trying to kiss Michelle Nolan onstage.

Hey everyone it's John. I just wanted to take a minute to comment on what happened in Oklahoma. As you might have heard, a kid came up on stage and started singing along with Michelle and then tried to force her to kiss him. First off I would like to thank all of the kids from Tulsa who apologized on behalf of this idiot. Secondly I would like to say that I had seen this guy get up on stage and start singing along and figured he would probably sing a line and then get off the stage or security would throw him off. I was also unsure of whether or not he was someone from one of the other bands who had played, or a person who worked for the radio station because he seemed to get up there with no problem and acted like he belonged there.
I was unfortunately trying to continue playing and singing the song and couldn't keep an eye on the kid. I did not see him try to kiss Michelle and actually didn't even know he had tried to do that until after the show was over, and I wouldn't have ever thought that someone would do something so offensive and so horrible ever. Thank God that Shaun was able to watch him and go over there and get him off the stage. The last thing that I would like to say is that this kid is an example of one of the worst types of people I can imagine. The fact that he was at our show and is a fan of our band makes me sick. What in the world makes a person think that he can do something like that? I can't even imagine. What kind of person would go up to a complete stranger and try to just force himself on her like that?

Normally I think we call that type of person a rapist. What this kid did is so sickening and so outrageous I find it very hard to put into words. If there are any people out there who are coming to our shows purely because they think Michelle, or for that matter anyone else in the band is hot and just want to get close to us then don't come to see us play and don't listen to our music. We're not interested in fulfilling any adolescent fantasies that anyone might have. I know that this kid is not an example of what the majority of our fan base is like. For the most part, our fans have been very respectful and nice to us and I appreciate that so much. But I have to take this time to say that I've noticed another type of person starting to show up at our shows and that is the kind of person who doesn't look at us as actual human beings but as these things that are just there for their entertainment. Some kids talk to us in such a demanding and invasive way that it is just horrifying. We don't want to act as if we are different than our fans. We don't want to put up that superstar barrier between us and our audience, but when people treat us like we're something other than regular people it forces that to happen. We appreciate the people who love our music so much. Anyone who sympathizes with this idiot should never come see us play or listen to our music ever.

Wow. Right on, John. This must be even harder on him seeing as Michelle is his sister. I can't imagine how she must feel, so violated and dirty. This kid is an idiot and as a female and a fan of Straylight Run, all I can say is that I'm disgusted and I hope this message from John makes any guy think twice about yelling out "MICHELLE! YOU'RE HOT!" at a Straylight show.

it's people like that that ruin straylight run shows for me. don't get me wrong, i think michelle is absoultely beautiful, but seriously, there's no need to shout "michelle, you're hot!" or anything else along the lines of that. and actually trying to kiss her on stage is just outragious. what is with these people? seriously, get a life.

on a lighter note, i absolutely love straylight run and everyone in it. i will always respect them and support them in every way possible, and through whatever they decide to do as a band.

ive noticed that on this site the responses to posts start w/ mentally stable people and end w/ people who dont know what the fuck they're talking about. john is completely right, she was molested (websters: To subject to unwanted or improper sexual activity), that's exactly what it was i dont care what you say. anyone who thinks john overreacted at someone MOLESTING HIS SISTER should go burn in hell.

john, you pull yourself together better than anyone i know, and i'm terribly sorry that someone would ever do that to michelle. everytime i go to a straylight show i love it because not only do i love the music you guys make, but how genuine each one of you guys are.

It's kind of weird how he expects everyone that likes his band to treat him as a normal human being and not a superstar. It's just not going to happen. When you're in a band that's as famous as Straylight Run, there are gonna be kids who treat you like a star.

I agree with whoever talked about it not being such a big deal if she had been a guy. Things shouldn't be that way, but they are. Either way, that guy was a dick and I hope someone kicked his ass.

It's guys like this (not John, but the fan) who give kids like the lot of us a bad name. This isn't really any different than the drunk guy who's hanging on girls at shows and trying to cop a feel. I'd hope that any of the at least semi-honorable guys on these forums (or even at the shows, for that matter) would be the type to punch out guys like this ass for being a rude prick.

I dont really see the problem in calling a member of a group hot. Is what he did okay hell no but I still think the statement was a little over done. As for yelling take your shirt off and it not working on of my first concerts Courtney Love did just as they asked and it was great as a 16 year old but that was a few years ago.

The visual image of sexual harassment panda walking on stage after a song made this fucked up situation seem funny to me, eventhough it's not. John is completely warranted to fly off the handle and feel like this. Yes Michelle is hot but there's a line you can't cross. This pieace of trash jumped over the line.

Let's face it, a lot of people who listen to this music are losers. They listen to bands like these for the sole reason that they see them as trendy and not for any reason that has any substance. They think it makes them cool to say they listen to a certain band. These are the same people who last year were calling Limp Bizkit an innovative metal band and thought Nelly invented rap. They don't know how to act, because all they've ever been exposed to is nothing more than vapid facades. And a few comments in this thread show that. They think it is totally okay to go up and touch some girl and try to kiss her, because they see her as nothing more than a means for them to enjoy themselves. And they are going to act the same way when they turn 18 in a few years and think nothing is cooler than going to strip clubs. They all think they are really tough kids who live for hardcore and they will tell you they own every rare 7" there is. The fact of the matter is that their CD collection consists of whatever they heard on the radio, but that is after you get past the popular trends of every previous year. Their collection is nothing more than a primer of how to try to look cool. If someone did that to my sister, I'd want to kick their ass too. People have no idea how pathetic they look when they feel they have to scream out how hot somebody is at a show. They just want attention because nobody would ever give it to them. There is a huge difference in a girl saying no to you if you try to get a kiss, and then going up to a complete stranger and try to kiss them in front of a couple hundred kids. The only reason anybody would do that is to try to be cool in front of 30 other kids who are also trying to figure out if it's cooler to wear black nail polish and red eye makeup. People just need to grow up, it's crazy how much different shows are now then they were even two years ago. There is no sense of community anymore, it is just a bunch of people who think that only they should have a good time at the expense of every other person at a show or every member of the band who has the mispleasure of playing in front of them.

3. Because that is how people gauge themselves on being cool. I promise you the people in the band own more than some, and just like going to the show, most people own them because they think it makes them cool.
4. Same as earlier, people think this makes them look cool and scene. I mean I assume something like this is standard fare at Good Charlotte concerts, and the same logic would appy there as it does here. As I said earlier, the whole point is to be seen now, and not the music. People want to stand out and so other kids will be like, "Oh that dude wearing his mom's makeup is at every show. He's cool as hell, he knows all the same bands who I think are rwally obscure."

Michelle Nolan is insanely beautiful, but I wouldn't jump on stage and try something like that.

michelle is hot, adam cheated on her, TBS broke up. she's a grown up, he can't go around making a hissy fit over some 16 year old kid when most bands run through groupies like toilet paper.

Hey, now that you mentioned the TBS dude, maybe that kid who attempted to lock lips with Michelle Nolan was actually Adam Lazzaro. Did anyone catch what that kid looked like?

The kid could've also been Jason Tate (haha, not really).

Well said freakin 10 kudos to u my man. Its so true. My friends and I cant help but go to shows now and its just flooded with kids that have no idea what band is playing or anything and are just wanting to be cool so when they come back to school on monday they can say oh i went to the show this weekend. It was awesome. We dyed our hair black before the show and got into some mosh pits. It was pretty wild stuff. Can we go and hang out with you now?? Its all a scene to part your hair nicely into a Joel Madden mohawk and hit up the local club on a saturday night. When you are seeing the all star football player in the pit at your local club and being as obnoxious as he is during school with his Rock on sign going in the air and trying to start pits with every drop "d" song there is there is something wrong there. Wishing he was Kid Rock and girls would flash him on stage. Its all about Sex drugs and rock and roll right?? And if i looked depressed then im emo right?? The scene is i wanna be called emo. Emo is dead. Move on.

You are correct!!

i can sum up this whole long spiel in a few words:

This scene is a complete joke now

It's ok though hold on a couple more years and hopefully it will all die down and go back to what it once was, an amazing community of music lovers.
Not just the 'COOL' thing to do.

Your a dumbass. First of all you say people listen to these bands to be cool and then you start saying you like them? Ontop of that I probably have so many bands you have never heard of. Are all you 9th graders gay? HOLY FUCK THATS SO GROSS HE TRIED TO KISS SOMEONE!! ITS A FUCKING KISS. and becuase John Nolan made a big deal of it all of you are to. If someone did this to my sister I'd be pissed and go over and talk to him about it but I wouldbnt be like im going to kick your ass. Plus Michelle didnt even say she cared....Nolan is just a whinny bitch who's very emo as you can tell by there lyrics. I like this band but this is being blown out of the water. If you were in a band onstage and a girl tried to kiss you i dont think you would go crazy and post something on your website saying i hate her i hope she never listens to us again and shit...i know you wouldnt. It was wrong but all of you are idiots (with the exception of a couple people)

The reason this incident is such a big deal is not only because Michelle was violated and this guy was COMPLETELY out of line (don't even try to defend him) but also because things like this have been happening at a lot of shows over the past year or two. Right now there are quite a few classy, beautiful and talented females in bands (Michelle, Agent M from TB, the Eisley girls, etc...) and they can't play a show without being harassed. Young women in the crowd can't simply enjoy a show. Now, if I'm in the crowd, I can rarely get through a show without some guy grabbing me around my waist or grabbing my ass (and no, it wasn't an accident, and when I confronted him, he actually ran away into the crowd). I know the majority of guys at shows aren't assholes, so if you see a friend or any guy acting like this at a show, do something.

See, you are proving my point. You are trying to prove how cool you are by saying all of these bands you've heard of who I apparently haven't. How hard could that be? You go to purevolume and look for every random band who fits whatever criteria you want, or you name every band from your hometown or your high school. It proves nothing. I'm not trying to sound badass. I'm sorry I hit you so close to home and made you get super defensive. And I bet you a million dollars you've listened to the radio since the 6th grade, it's impossible not to have heard it in either your mom's car, a freind's, inside a store etc... I'm not trying to generalize everyone on this site, and saying that I know everything about them, I was basically commenting on what I've seen happen over the last five years. But since, you think so highly of yourself, I really am interested to hear about all of these bands you know who I have never heard of, because if I have never heard of them I might admit that you really are as cool as you think you are.

blah blah jesse lacey, john nolan, adam lazzara blah blah blah fuck it

I thought all this drama had been replaced around here by Hawthorne Heights and Senses Fail bashing....although such is just as pointless it was nice to not hear about that whole barrell of monkeys for a while. The Gerard sexuality issue is also another annoying topic people waste too much time around here arguing about while they wait for their mom to get home with from the grocery store so they can eat their cheetos and mountain dew.

Ive been at far too many events like this where there was uncomfortable band/fan interaction. Really in this day and age you cannot take a fan jumping on stage lightly no matter what they do. "Soy Bomb" was one thing...but we live in a different world today. Im not trying to be preachy but after the Dimebag Darrell incident it makes you all too aware that there are way too many fucking psychos out there capable of bad things. Nothing I have seen at a show I attended has been as bad as this incident with Michelle, but I have often felt like things could have turned ugly if they progressed. It is not only guys who have pulled shit like this on females in bands. A couple high school girls almost had Jeremiah's(Mest) pants pulled off after trying to grab his dick everytime he got close enough. I saw a guy throwing ice cubes at Andy Jackson from HRC from about 25 feet away. He tried his best to shake it off but the dude kept pelting him in the face about 20 times until he had enough and stopped the song. The security in the joint was zero and they a couple members of HRC jumped in to the crowd trying to point the guy out so he could be escorted from the premises and the guy tried to fucking start some fisticuffs, provoking the rest of the band to jump in the fray. It never got any further than a little scuffling and pushing, but something that could have turned ugly.

I think it's pretty sick that people think what happened to Michelle was 'no big deal'. You obviously don't have sisters, mothers, or girlfriends. And, you've probably never been assaulted either. Trust me, it's not fun. It was not okay for that guy to jump on the stage. It was not okay for security to have let it happen. What if something worse had happened? It's pretty sick that people would think it's okay for someone to try and force themselves on someone because they're in a band. Yes, Michelle is good looking, but that doesn't give anyone the right to think they can try and make out with her. She's a human being, and deserves to be treated as such. And, it wouldn't be a different situation if it had happened to John. It would've been just as bad.

John had every right to say what he said. He didn't overreact. That's his sister. He probably could've said a lot more.

Just another shining example of another lame ass lead singer of what ultimately is a no-name band (in the REAL world mind you, not the ap.net world) trying to create the illusion of superstardom. What John "Numbnuts" Nolan doesn't know is that that "drunken idiot" would've done that to ANY band with a girl in it, the fact that it's Staylight Runs has nothing to do with anything, and the overzealous commentary about "putting a barrier" between themselves and fans is ridiculous. That guy probably didn't even know who they were.
