What?

The second EP out of three to be released by Boris Skalsky’s solo project, Dead Heart Bloom. The band seem to be establishing themselves as New York City’s answer to Britpop, just a few years late. However, if you wrote the group off before for being generic, this EP might change your mind.

How is it?

Where the first EP Fall-In was straight up Radiohead, this one shows the bluesy, rocking side of the band a la Pedestrian or even Queens of the Stone Age. You can kind of tell that they just wanted to have a different sounding EP – do the Thrice thing – but this tone actually suits them pretty well. In fact, it suits them better than their original Brit-Pop sound did.

“I Am Going to Go Meet Jesus” rides out ZZ Top drums with some pretty explosive guitars and includes the lyric “I’m gonna kill myself.” Not exactly religious stuff. The rest of the songs basically follow suit (save for the somber, waltzy closer), and the title track even features a saxophone solo. Overall the EP shows that Dead Heart Bloom can and will rock. I can’t help but wonder what the next EP is going to sound like, but if I had a vote it would be a lot like this one.
