Those fucking hackers man. It's all 1337-speak (or elite) which originates from 31337, the port these mofos used to hack Windows 95. Pwned originally came from an IRC chat, where these dudes were arguing about some shit, some dude won, and someone mistyped owned. From there it's spread like wildfire. I used to play a lot of video games, and I remember talking (and typing) like that in grade nine.


But yeah man, it's all those fucking hackers.

Very interesting regarding your FIRST point about elite - but, you're are wrong about pwned, there was a game everyone would play online, and when you lost it came up with the word owned, except it was spelt wrongly, pwned and thats how it caught on, because they starting using the misspelt word. I read it on a website, so it must be true...

Edit: A corruption of the word "Owned." This originated in an online game called Warcraft, where a map designer misspelled "owned." When the computer beat a player, it was supposed to say, so-and-so "has been owned."

Instead, it said, so-and-so "has been pwned."

It basically means "to own" or to be dominated by an opponent or situation, especially by some god-like or computer-like force.
