View Full Version : "that guy" in philosophy class

You know who I'm talking about. Every class has one. That guy who, while going over material, raises his hand says something like...

"I don't understand why Mill wrote this. This doesn't apply at all to people in Sudan, or starving children in Ethiopia. I think it's really arrogant that he would write this, and assume that all people in the world could actually apply his philosophy to their lives."

"I don't see the relevance of Singer's arguments here. There's no way this applies to people in totalitarian governments, or third world countries."

Funny. White men from affluent backgrounds, writing in English, and targeting upper-middle class people in English speaking countries, aren't keeping in mind that their philosophical ideas don't apply to 100% of the human population in all of time. Interesting.

I hate that fucking guy. Just shut up and let us get out of class on time.

OP is probably one of those annoying kids who constantly ask "is this going to be on the test?"

I would love nothing more then to strangle people like this.

In fact, no, I'm not. I've noticed a pattern in scholastic environments where professors / teachers generally, even if you don't ask, will give you a pretty clear of idea what will be on the test. I see no reason to ask. You got me good, though.

well i mean, since you kind of misunderstood the entire idea of ethics, i thought you'd end up like that.

I wouldn't say that my opposition to irrelevant comments in class showcases a misunderstanding of ethics as a generality. I'd say it has more to do with: We all know that these writings aren't going to apply to 100% of the human population 100% of the time.

My Ethics class this semester is boring because my teacher makes it that way. It's so hard to pay attention. She's so mundane.

but ethics in those time periods were supposed to, which makes it a valid objection. i think you're taking it for granted what we know because a lot of people do think their ethics apply in that way.

I think there is a person like this in about every single class actually. This one girl in my psych of human relations class NEVER shuts her fucking gob. And half of the things she says are completely obvious and a five year old can come up with more insightful stuff.

This goes for any humanities based class. Unfortunately, intellectual snobbery occurs at every school level.

I'm just really into listening in class. :|
Teachers are generally teachers for themselves to speak.
The Best though is my friend in Accounting who talks and then gets literally really angry later when the teacher told him to be quiet and can't shut his trap for the rest of the night about the glare the teacher gave

I know exactly what you're talking about. I have one of those in my class as well.
Nothings ever clear for him or its too vague... and the worst part is I got stuck with him as a partner today. Not a single intelligent word came out of his mouth; all he did was spew garbage and hold our class up.

Being a philosopher for the most part entails you are trying to reach some universal truth. keyword being universal. you are an idiot for wanting your class to dumb down and only look from an upper middle class white view.

In my CIS 1020 lab everyone acts like they have never touched a computer, and what should take us 10 minutes, takes us the whole 50 minute lab. It pisses me off.

I am a philo major and have no feeling whatsoever towards the type of person the OP is referring to, a good majority of philo is bullshit anyway no need to let it bug ya anymore than it already does

i am the guy who asks ridiculous questions. none like the man in the original post, but i do want to learn. my TA does not respond to my email questions, where does that leave me? unsupervised exploration and misinterpretation.

phil19
10/09/08, 12:35 AM
i dont think asking questions is annoying. whats annoying is when its time to leave and the teacher is about to dismiss the class and then theres one person who always has to ask that one last question about something which the teacher has already explained! that is the worst!

Maybe it's just me, but I think I learn better when it's more of a discussion. That only really applies to humanities though.
