Don't let the audience ruin the movie. Ugh. Who cares what kind of people like a movie? If you enjoy it, screw it.

I generally agree with you, and I don't mean that in the sense that "oh man, if these people like it, then I'm way too cool to enjoy it". I'm certainly able to appreciate music independent of how other people feel about it.
I more just mean that how a film is received can change the way it's viewed. I dunno, I'm not really sure how to explain it, haha.

I guess that would mean I should be embarrassed that Donnie Darko is one of my favorite movies because of the way it's viewed, but no. I enjoy watching it multiple times, listening to its soundtrack and score, and quoting it. All regardless of the way people feel about it.

I don't mean that at all, and I'm certainly not in any position to tell you what movies to enjoy or how to enjoy them. I'm just saying that how a movie is received by the public can drastically change what the movie means to me and to the greater audience.
Ok, I'm gonna shut up now. I'm thinking in circles and coming off as a huge movie elitist douche bag, which is the worst kind of douchebag.

For awhile I thought Donnie Darko was a really good movie whose fanbase just kind of tainted it. Then I watched it the other day for the first time in years and realized its fucking lousy. Maybe its cynicism that I've gained from all the movies I've seen since I first watched DD or maybe the dialogue in that movie really is just terrible.

What's with all the hate? Some people might not agree with you, and I think the guy makes interesting points that can lead to discussion. Nowhere in this thread have I said that I endorse or agree with this list.
I get it that you like Donnie Darko. That's fine. I like the movie as well, but some people don't. That's also fine. It seems to me like you're more upset that I tried to start a discussion about a movie you happen to love and don't want to waste your breath arguing about. That's not my fault.

Guys, if you read the thing it doesn't say that any of these movies are bad just their followings are pretty lame. I was about ready to tear this article apart when I saw the list but then I read some of them. Fight Club is probably my favorite movie but the people that always try to "start fight clubs" are fucking retarded. Same with napoleon Dynamite, its ok but the fact that everyone wears its merchandise makes it annoying, same with Scarface, someone thinks he is the biggest fucking gangster when he wears an XXXXXL Scarface jacket.
The title of the article is misleading, it should have been called "7 Movies with the Lamest Cult Followings" but at least it gives reason for putting some of these great movies on the list.
Also I would agree that Rocky Horror is the lamest cult movie ever but it doesn't have an annoying following you don't see nearly as much people wearing rocky horror stuff as people wearing nightmare before christmas stuff.

RAWRRR I'M GOING TO ATTACK YOU CAUSE YOU POSTED THIS YOU ARE A JERK!1!1!1
Seriously, this thread has a stick up its ass. And for the record it's pretty right on dissing some of these movies. I mean Fight Club is no longer seen for what it's suppose to be and most people go, "It's a book? Fuck it, let's bro out." Never seen A Clockwork Orange, so I can't say anything. Napoleon Dynamite just got old and people killed it. Like that Dave Chappelle skit where he pretended to be Rick James. Monty Python is a great movie, but not everyone's taste. Scarface definitely is overrated, It's a good flick, but everyone praises it like it's the end all to movies.
Anyway, I really just posted this because of all the people giving AShannon shit for trying to invoke maybe a discussion or list movies WE THINK are lame or have a lame following.
AShannon04
09/19/08, 10:12 AM
I think the thing that bothers me most about Scarface is that people take it to be a huge endorsement of the gangster lifestyle and how awesome it is, but in reality, it's the total opposite.

But people criticize fans rather than the movie. Notice posts like "I think half the people who love it don't get it." I hate seeing such stupid posts. Criticize the movie instead, point out the flaws, what you liked or didn't like, but don't base your argument about why a movie is bad based on the audience. I'm just tired of reading these posts and I think the Donnie Darko sucks discussions have been beaten to death. I have yet to read a single intelligent negative post about the movie in this thread. I would be interested to hear legit reasons why people didn't enjoy it instead of the overused "worst movie ever" or "most overrated movie ever" posts.

Although I really enjoy the movie, the reasons I personally find it overrated is that it tries so hard to be deep and indie and dangerous that it tends to come off as pretentious, where it's almost like, "if you don't get this movie and what it's about, then you're an idiot". As a result, people pretend to understand it and perpetuate that pretentious attitude, even though, in the end, almost everyone is in the dark about what it's really about.
There are plenty of movies that are complex and try to initiate discussion with their audience, or that have a message that's up for debate. I don't think this is one of those.

I don't know if this movie has a big following, but I really didn't like Chasing Amy. I remember people recommending it to me - everywhere - so I checked it out and I was really disappointed.

It's Always Sunny is fucking amazing. Hilarious show.
But for me though. I've never really been a Kevin Smith fan. don't really know why. I really don't like Clerks. and Chasing Amy or Mallrats didn't really do it for me. He's really funny when he speaks at colleges and stuff, but as far as his movies go, not my thing.

No, I'm a petty dick who judges things without ever seeing them.

After reading the article, and then the thread, I'm 99% no one in this thread understands the point of the list.

The guy is bashing the followings not the movies? For instance, he cites the fact that idiots who loved A Clockwork Orange, imitated the stuff they did in the movie. Thus, an awful Cult following. The problem with the list is he wrote "7 LAMEST MOVIES With Cult Followings" not "7 Movies with the LAMEST Cult Followings."

I might have missed it.
I think the outrage in this thread proves his point more elegantly than he ever could in the article. And you're right about the title. It was worded poorly.

I never really pointed out, that I can recall. My first post in here was to defend the thread maker cause people were giving him shit. Don't be sorry, you're right.

Well, thank you. At least I'm not alone.
