Second Hand Rumours – So Many Steps EP
Record Label: Mountainfield Records
Release Date: Summer 2008

Who?

Second Hand Rumours are friends of mine because they are from Sweden. They also play benign folk-pop that may or may not suffer from overly strange accents. Either way, and if you can overlook a bit of translation loss, So Many Steps is a good way to end the summer months. Having a record that sounds like the sunset in mid-September is always a handy thing.

How Is It?

No hard-hitting complaints here, but you’ll never have that breathy “Whoa!” sensation after “Seven Years” runs through its snare taps and sparse guitar lines. “Summer Night Tune” is a fan favorite and it’s not hard to see why. Memories of Todd Martin dance in my head as simplistic lines like, “Then we drank a beer or two / Started singling like we always do / Discussing politics and life / Who will you marry / Who will be your wife” bounce around. You’ll tap your toes plenty during So Many Steps’ 5 songs, but you may also store these tunes in the part of your head you keep the Pythagorean theory or that one girl’s name from that one night at that party. The memories are there, but they’re hard to recall. I’d recommend making a note to regularly revisit Second Hand Rumour’s heartfelt pop songs.

Good review--analogy goes straight to the point.

And I never could remember the damn Pythagorean theory.
