View Full Version : Who has the best vocal range?
Here It Goes
09/19/08, 09:42 AM
Just wondering who you people think has the best range of any current singer (Andrea Bocelli excluded...he wins.) Talking rock bands here.
My vote goes to whoever this dude is from City Sleeps, check out the notes he hits from 2:20 - 2:50 of this absolutely terrible video... the guy goes through 3 octaves in this song and doesn't hit falsetto once, that is straight high voice action.
ZPNbSlklxZ0
Also, who do you think has straight up the best voice? My vote goes to Jason Vena, formerly of Acceptance. That dude didn't have an insane range, but man, he could put a room full of crying babies to sleep. I'll never figure out why he quit.

And just in case I see a million "OhmyGANTHONYgrEEn" posts; "range" doesn't only mean that you are able to sing like a chipmunk, or that you have a clear voice. This is more looking for a number of octaves, or the ability to sing baritone, tenor, alto, falsetto, etc.
Thom Yorke has a good range.

Well, not really "current" in that they've been around forever, but the first two to come to mind were David Bowie and Jon Bon Jovi, and they're both still making music, so I'll go with that.
David Bowie can really do it all - low, high, whiney, screamy, gritty, a great voice for rock, pop, whatever. I don't know the technical stuff, but judging by his albums, his octave range is huge, and he clearly pre-dates auto tune. I don't know if his more recent stuff is a good representation of his voice, but his 70's stuff is probably second only to Freddie Mercury.
Bon Jovi's voice is a little more limited as far as sounds and timbres and whatnot, but his octave range is just as huge. Try singing along to some of their more pop sounding stuff, more than likely he can sing way lower and way higher than you could ever hope to.

Why should he write lyrics that make you feel something. If you want that go fork over $150 to get a song by Max Bemis. Maybe he wants to release his inner demons with Chiodos. Personally I prefer Cinematic Sunrise.

Are you really 30? "ForeverDelayed" you got that right! Haha, I'm kidding it's nice to bring some new perspective to the forum if you are. I agree with both of these choices. Bowie's voice is like Iggy Pop's in that it can dip and drag or it can belt if it wants to.
And if you've ever tried to sing the chorus to Livin On A Prayer after the key change, you truly understand the unbelievable height of JBJ's range.

Because the question was "who has the best range?", not "who is your favorite singer?" Whether you like him or not, you've gotta admit he can flat out sing. And regardless of his personality, Bon Jovi were pretty good up until the mid 90's. This whole "comeback" phase really sucks and I kinda tune him out these days, but up through the Keep The Faith and the new songs on the best of CD, they were doing some good stuff.

Who knows, maybe. But let's be honest... if someone offered to pay you millions of dollars to make music, would you turn it down? Most people wouldn't. And even with people who make music "for the money" that's not the only reason, they do actually love making music. Holy tit, this thread went down the crapper.
1) Nic Newsham, dude from Deas Vail, great vocalists. Kudos to whoever brought those up.
2) Whoever the hell comes in here and hates on both Say Anything and Chiodos for being "scene bands" needs to grow a pair. Dude, the only reason anyone uses terms like "scene bands" is because of close-minded, pidgeon-holing ass hats like yourself, so go eat a cock sandwich. I, like many others, enjoy music from a variety of "scenes", and if it weren't for people like yourself, there wouldn't be scenes at all.
3) Bon Jovi may have a good voice, but the dude's faux swagger just kills it for me. That and the fact that every mid-30's acid-wash jean wearing soccer mom with a stanky perm gets their 12-year old kid's hair cut so he looks like Bon Jovi. This, strangely enough, is what bothers me.
4) I think Craig Owens has an insane voice, but I can only take so much of it. An entire concert might bother me.
edit: Then again, I guess I just defied myself with the Jon Bon Jovi comment. Ah....OK he has a good voice. My brain just exploded with that revelation.

Hailey Williams (paramore) (talk shit about them if you want...but hailey's got some pipes on her)

just a guy who is known for having a range of 8 octaves. most people can do like 3, maybe 4 if you're talented. hes mastered the voice in between falsetto and chest voice that most people cant find, and he can hit notes that are in like a whistling range (but not whistling with air, actually using your chest) and there are very few people who are even capable of that. in all the ranges he has complete control over the notes hes hitting too.

falsetto counts dude thats part of your vocal range. its not like anyone can hit any note imaginable if you use falsetto, there are still distinct limits, most men cant even get close to brent's highest note in their falsettoes. not to mention the whistling register, which is ABOVE falsetto and which very few people are capable of using.
