so every private college wants 2 teacher recommendations with their application. the problem is, all the teachers at my school put limits on their recommendations, and before I could get my shit together and do the forms they want to write recs they all get taken, aside from 2 english teachers i've had. the problem is, it seems like 2 recommendations from the same subject looks really bad. does anyone know if this is true?

Aren't you a little ways a way from applying to colleges, Spencer?

Anyways, I guess you should have "picked it up", it being the pace as well as your room, and gotten those recs before your teachers got swarmed.

Just sayin'.

depends on your major? if you're going to be an English major it wouldn't look bad, if you're undecided they might wonder what's up

Didn't know community college required recommendations.

I don't think it matters who you get your recommendations from as long as the teachers you ask know you well enough to write a good letter. When I applied to my college I said I was going for a BA in Bio (which I changed last year) and I got recs from my AP English and Spanish teachers.

thats the stupidest thing i have ever heard. why would they put limits on recs? don't they want the students to be able to apply to college?

I hate having to get this kind of shit, so awkward.

I got one from my English teacher, one from my Italian teacher, and one from my guidance counselor (he did one for every kid in my grade but I had the advantage of having him for a teacher Soph year so he told me he'd write me a really good recommendation).

How big is your graduating class that they put limits? That's stupid. We had 276 kids.

That's weird that they put a limit on recommendations. I don't think it matters if it's the same subject for both; the only time i've seen requirements for specific recommendations is when you're trying to get into an engineering school and they want at least one from a math teacher.

For private schools, it sometimes does matter if it's from the same subject; most of the schools would specify on the application, or on the supplement.

But seriously? A limit? You can always talk to the teachers that you think know you the best, and explain to them the situation. Unless you don't have good relationships with all your teachers, I think that is probably the best move.

Holy crap, I can't believe it's been almost a year since I've had to worry about that, wow.

Teacher recommendations suck, I just went through my nightmare. I'm apply for the William Hearst Youth Senate Scholarship, and was trying to get my app. together. Had great letters of recommendation from my principal and the former SGA President at UVM/current House candidate, and just needed one from my old history teacher. He's an English major so I figured he'd be a good bet, but his letter ended up just being confusing and barely allowed me to get it in the mail before the deadline.

Well, as long as they are willing to write you a good rec, it shouldn't really matter. I agree that they are a pain in the ass though. Teachers take such a long time to write them. I still need to get mine in for study abroad.

650. Limits are a bitch.

Where are you deciding on applying?

First choice USC, then UCSD, UCSB, occidental, and pitzer. And some random other schools on the east coast but those are my main choices.

Naw i got my both of my reqs from science teachers. One of my teachers gave me such a good recommendation that it most likely got me into Vassar( I just applied their as a joke). He still keeps it posted in his room. Like this recomendation makes me sound like GOD. The other teacher just said that i put a lot of "effort". I dont think it hurts at all to have Two from the same subject.

All of my schools only required one rec (and one from the guidance counsler, making two). The only weird thing was BU required a rec from a CURRENT teacher rather than an old one. With the deadline being early october, I wasn't quite sure how a current teacher could know me well enough to write a recommendation.

If you know any of your teachers well enough, or a teacher you've had in the past, explain your situation. Maybe they'll write one for you anyways.

Why you would ever want to go to Vassar is beyond me. Poughkeepsie is a shithole, I couldn't ever imagine living there.

Ever think of sticking to UC schools? They don't accept letters of recommendation, just grades, test scores, and some essays.

I got a recommendation from my band director (who had been teaching me sax since I was in 4th grade) and my sophomore biology teacher, who I barely knew.

I don't think universities put a ton of weight on recommendations.

I remember in High school, I was invited into the national honor society. And they wanted 10....yes...10 teacher recommendations. So I pretty much gave up after that and I never applied.

Don't worry. It doesn't really matter which teachers the recommendations are from - just as long as they are teachers who can vouch for your abilities and have seen you at your best. Are you planning on majoring in English or a field that is writing intensive? If so, having two recommendations from an English teacher can actually work to your advantage. Also, even if the teachers do put limits on how many recommendations they write, it doesn't hurt to ask. Try explaining your situation to them. I'm sure they will understand.

Bringing this back because I've been trying to get ones for grad school and the process SUCKS. I've switched majors like 4 times (hence, why I'm in undergrad at 23) so I haven't really kept in touch with many of my profs. The only one I did moved to Idaho. sadface.

I've now decided, it's insane. Teachers don't enjoy writing rec's, and i've asked for about a million already, between study abroad, internships, grants and soon to be law school. I mean, honestly, would a teacher write a bad rec?

sdbrown
02/12/09, 06:42 PM
I don't think a teacher would write a bad rec. I think most of 'em have a form rec they use for students that haven't done too much special stuff and they'd just not agree to write one for a student they didn't like
