Norma Jean - Yah, everyone is probably tired of hearing "Memphis Will Be Laid To Rest", but I loved the first album and after losing Josh, they took a definite turn for the worst. I guess you have the the Chariot, but their songs aren't that solid. It's just a bunch of noise, which is cool, but nothing will ever beat that first album.
Taking Back Sunday had this amazing energy and thing going. It was like "Tell All Your Friends" was that energetic, high school album and then "Where You Want To Be" was like their going away to college album..."Louder Now" was just a combo of both, but just not good at all.
Every Time I Die - Last Night In Town and Hot Damn! were their best and then they just decided to go suck. Yah, the third one had catchy songs and good hooks, but the chaos in those first two albums are long gone and I miss it.
Le Tigre - I loved Bikini Kill. Always will. But I was excited when I heard Le Tigre's first album because it was so different from what she did in BK. It wasn't just distorted, out of tune guitars and school girl chants. Then they came out with "Feminist Sweepstakes", which was alright, but it reminded me of BK with drum machines and samplers. And then This Island came out....and it just BLEW DICK.
who else?
Jefferson Airplane, The Used, My Chemical Romance, Liz Phair, Neutral Milk Hotel(I'm sorry, but everything before or after "In The Aeroplane", is just boring), Be Your Own Pet, Yeah Yeah Yeahs(just "Show Yr Bones")...
I used to love the The Used and My Chemical Romance, as lame as it sounds. But nothing will ever replace the nostalgia for "Let It Bleed" or even "I'm Not Ok". Good pop hits. period.

basically all great bands have gone downhill. The only ones I can think of that haven't are Brand New (Devil and God was incredible) and Crime in Stereo and I guess Thee Early November. There are probably a few more. Most bands, if they don't totally redefine their sound after 2-3 albums just go bad because tey have nothing left to write. Thats why Brand New is so great. Cursive too.
Opeth hasn't.
They went up from their debut Orchid to their best album Still Life. From their it's been a little bit inconsistent, Ghost Reveries is one of Opeth's worst, but Damnation ranks among the band's best.
To add to the list, Thursday.

Coheed and Cambria...
More of a style change than anything I guess, but I would definitely have to say that their first to albums are their best. The newer stuff I still dig, but its more out of nostalgia and really wanting to still love this band than anything else.

Although with two releases-- I mean, I guess they have some earlier, pre-IAR stuff, but I'm not taking those into consideration-- it may be a little early to be passing any kind of judgement on the quality of the band's discography.

fall out boy: i think they have gotten worse in a general sense. tttyg was amazing, fuct was really good, ioh was good, but it showcase fob going from pop-punk to pop-rock. and from what i've heard of their new album, they are continuing in the vein of poppy bullshit.
afi: they made amazing music and really honed their sound with sing the sorrow....and then......well, you know.
against me!: have completely changed their sound.
avenged sevenfold: if they haven't sold out, i don't know who has.
alkaline trio: i thought crimson was just a little too cleaned up and poppy, but still good. agony and irony is more in the wrong direction in my opinion.
switchfoot: i think they peaked with the beautiful letdown. while their records after that arent bad, they arent better either.
i don't think underoath have gotten worse. i think you have to completely seperate the band between the changing of times and they're only chasing safety. different singers, different sound. old underoath was loud, fast, super heavy metal. and new underoath is loud, heavy in a different way, atmospheric hardcore. i think new uo have improved on each album and are one of the only bands that consistently gets heavier and keeps their beliefs and ideals intact.
i also don't think taking back sunday have gotten worse. i thin kthey have become more streamlined and less edgy, which i dont like. but they are still good.
i dont think anti-flag have gotten wrose at all. i think they have never made a bad album. bright lights isnt their best, but i feel like they probably had to eat it on their first major label album to get freedom on the next. which i dont agree with, but whatever. any band that has a song called, "your daddy was a rich man, your daddy's fucking dead" gets a free pass once in a while in my book.

As bad as this is going to sound, I really wish that they could keep making nu-metal and just really push it to the limit. I just don't think that they really "finished" that sound, if you know what I mean. The only reason why they changed their sound is to be more commerical, which I found somewhat depressing.
That being said, I acutally do like the direction they took with it. I think my favorite track is probably "Bleed It Out" because of the old-school LP feel to it. After that it'd be "In Pieces". "Hands Held High" was alright, but since that there wasn't as much rapping on the album it just seemed out of place. It would have been better if there was maybe another track like that on the record, possibly replacing "In Between", which to me fell flat.

I think Taking Back Sunday is the answer to this question. Tell All Your Friends isn't so bad but from then on they are really hard to listen without getting really bored.
I've never really enjoyed listening to TBS. Tell All Your Friends is boring to me and their newer stuff is just something I ignore all together. They weren't really all that great to begin with.

Yeah, they can get pretty boring but there are a few good songs off of Tell All Your Friends, but I can definatly see why someone would think they are boring.

I loved Reanimation when I first got it. Now it just seems kind of juvenile. Still love it for the nostalgia factor though.
Oh no, not Blink! Sorry, I am like the anti-Blink. They were decent and wrote some fun songs, don't get me wrong, but they just never seemed to progress until the end of their career. I just don't have the tolerance for bands that do not progress at all.

yeah i know a lot of people don't like them, after TOYPAJ i was like "ok, this is awsome but i want some innovative stuff from these guys", and then they came out with their last album and it became my all-time favorite CD, i listen to that disk every day.
if they would of survived a few more years with their new sound they would have made history.

I don't know if they would have made history, but I think that they could have made some interesting music if they kept progressing. It's a pity what happened. I've listned to their untitled (self-titled? whatever) album and it's actually pretty good. It's just that if you take their whole discography there's just not a lot of depth. It just seems that one or two "seriously amazing" songs per album is just...not good? Is that what I'm looking for here? I don't know. But Blink was good at being Blink so with that I have no qualms. It's just if you compare Blink to a lot of other bands that are similar (such as my beloved Green Day) they aren't so great. They just worked hard and got lucky.

I don't think they could have gone on with that. After all it was a concept album and the story pretty much ended at the last track. Where could you have gone from there? No, AVA is better conceptually (which is what I think Tom's going for) because the story can go on, even though they more or less suck.

"Ripped off a lot"? What do you mean by that? Green Day have been around for 20 years and with each album they've progressed in a different way. If by "ripped off a lot" you mean that they ripped off other bands (I've heard accusations such as them ripping off the Replacements and Buzzcocks) then let me tell you something: that's all music is. If you boil any musician down to their core you can figure out their influences and say "they totally ripped so and so off". But Green Day didn't do that. They took their influences from various different bands (Replacements, Operation Ivy, some mainstream 80s bands, ect.) and put their own spin on it. Like everyone else in music.
Now if you're saying you don't like American Idiot because of the political connection then that's totally understandable, even though it's more of a social then political album. But I have no idea whatsoever where you're getting the "ripped off a lot" from. So please, enlighten me.

i mean ripped off as in, they borrowed a lot of riffs and melodies note-for-note, like the Bassline for Hitchin' A Ride is note-for-note Stray Cat Strut by Stray Cats
Waiting takes the melody from Downtown, and the solo is the most obvious part
Brain Stew is the exact same chord progression as 25 Or 6 To 4 by Chicago

Chord progressions get used over and over, so do boring basslines and quite a few melodies. This does not mean that they deliberatly took them from the songs. Things like that just happen, you know?
Yeah, I totally understand the politics thing. I guess it came to me at a time where I was forced to become more politically aware of the world. To each his own really.
I didn't really think you were flaming, but I've heard people say over and over that they don't like Green Day after American Idiot/Dookie numerous times because they've "sold out" or something along those lines. I lol even harder at "cradle of filth" even being mentioned as near death metal. They're hardly metal anymore, playing keyboard-centeric goth bullshit now, and they used to be crappy atmospheric symphonic metal band. Such a terrible band.
Also, are you fucking kidding me with A7x? Near death metal? Those were some of the worst screams I have heard in my life, they were so... metalcore, almost Atreyu screams. ok. we need to settle this once and for all.
Avenged Sevenfold have always sucked, even when they were a crappy metal band disguised as "hardcore". Now, they're just a crappy metal band disguised as hair metal. Lameeeeee.
Underoath were never good. It wasn't the fact they had heavy Christian undertones. They just sucked. Dallas was shitty as their first singer and he is shitty now in Maylene. alright alright i retract my statement haha. cradle of filth can be described as black metal. by no means am i a fan of death/black/goth/thrash but i THINK cradle falls into one of those categories. M. Shadows screams at the time could have been called black metal or death depending on the band of the corresponding genre.
sounding the seventh trumpet is the avenged album i have in mind. i have not liked any other recording of theirs.

i think the arctic monkeys have fallen off with their latest release as well. same goes for he is legend.
Schylar Croom of he is legend actually said that the only reason they made I am Hollywood is to attract a certain fan base. they never wanted that to be their style so the focused of the more hard rock southern style whatever you want to call it. schylar said also that this would weed out the people who were just in for the scene and not the music. kind of a weird move imo

as for underoath, i like them, and have been thoroughly ripped to shreds already for that very fact. i think dallas sounded like every other metally screamer in the scene. completely unable to make out his words. but i think spencer has a more melodic scream that you can actually decifer and his clean vocals are pretty good.

You think TDAG was mediocre and you like YFW? That doesn't make any sense. Not one song on YFW can be classified as anything but mediocre. TDAG was a much more mature, complex, and all around better album.
Actually Soco Amaretto and The No Seatbelt song are extremely good. Flashes to the future, you might say.
But yeah, BN has matured and gotten way better with each album
cradle of filth can be described as black metal. by no means am i a fan of death/black/goth/thrash but i THINK cradle falls into one of those categories.
Cradle is hardly black metal. They are more cheesy gothic keyboard music that tires so hard to be obscure and weird. I just hate that band so much, so forgive me if I rant about it :-)

your just an upset asshole. calm the hell down dude. your also speaking as if what your saying is fact. its not its opinion, which you are entitled to. and in my opinion allman brothers and 38 special aren't very good. granted i do like Maylene and they are friends of mine and they are southern and amazing, but if your going to suggest southern rock to people on these boards atleast use some one good like Skynrd. just saying
kid, i can tell you already know nothing about GOOD southern rock. the allman brothers are way fucking better than SKYNYRD. if you knew anything about southern rock, you'd know there was way better.
maylene sucks, period. THEY ARE NOT A SOUTHERN ROCK BAND. just because you've got long hair, a flannel shirt, and a pair of shitkickers on, doesn't mean you are southern rock. it just means you look dumb. or like you're redoing 1994 all over again.

Not true? AC/DC. Lynyrd Skynyrd. Queen. Any 80's Glam band. Still don't believe me? You really loved all those albums? Sure, there are a few exceptions (I don't listen to either of the people you stated often at all, so that's probably why I missed them), but other than that, I know I'm right.

"poppy" u kidding me? new wave is a punk album to its core just because they sold tons of records. They wrote songs with the same themes as their older albums. The only thing this band lost was its low budget sound the songs still rock hard and there still as punk as it gets today

did their sound quality improve...yes. they got better equipment, got better at aformentioned equipment, and got better studios and producers.
true, the songs are still widely centered around the things they've always written about.
but, there is no arguing that their sound has become more poppy. listen to axel rose and then new wave and tell me new wave isn't poppy.

I've heard the hype about your band, Ive seen your video playing on the TV.
Publicity photos in magazines, no none of it makes me feel anything.
I would be lying to you if I did not say something.
That would make me feel like a politician.
A middle of the road opinion that no one finds offensive or challenging.
I'm not interested.
The stage is not a pedestal.
I don't think your bad people I just think that your aesthetic is horrible.

I'll add a few bands that I think (some may be already listed)
-Soilwork
-Atreyu
-Sparta
-Jimmy Eat World (Futures was better than Bleed American though)
-Taking Back Sunday
-I would have said Dashboard Confessional before The Shade Of Poison Trees
-My Chemical Romance (I wasn't ashamed to like them when they first started out and even on the 2nd record that was quite popular, but that 3rd record is shit in the bed outside of 2 songs maybe)
people would likely say The Get Up Kids, but I was into everything (except oddly enough Four Minute Mile) and some of those same people may say Saves The Day and I think everything is at least a little good (except I do not like Can't Slow Down)
I saw someone reference Opeth's Ghost Reveries not being good, you need to spin that a few more times because it's awesome...everything Opeth have ever done is golden
and as long as I see a few nu-metal bands in here...I will throw out one of the few that I like(d)
Finger Eleven, the first 2 records are awesome, all the way through...3rd record is solid with the exception of that hit single ballad "One Thing", they seemed very much intrested in trying to recreate another hit on their last album, Them Vs. You Vs. Me and that album sucks shit

You Vs. Me and that album sucks shit
saves the day does no wrong.

I don't know man I think soup and nico were great albums even though nico was never really finished.
How about Avenged Sevenfold? That first album was a pretty good metal record then it just got worse when someone told that dude he can sing. I didn't even bother to listen to the last 2

The Changing of Times was their heaviest album. Also their first album.
I thought it went, Acts of Depression, Cries of the Past, and than The Changing of Times? Anyway. I'm not going to lie, I do like The Changing of Times album. I don't like anything after or before it, though.

i dont think JEW can do any wrong. Even Bleed American, though a bit poppier than usual, was awesome.
Foo Fighters had a really cool first couple of albums and then have made the exact same mediocre album with a couple of singles for over a decade.
Stone Roses are the epitome of a band who's debut was incredible then just didn't pull it together. TBS I agree with.

This is true. I liked every album up until One By One...that's when I started liking only the singles. "One By One", "Best Of You", "Times Like These"...great songs...maybe a few others.
But that new album...total shit.

i think its obvious that most bands degrade over time. kudos to bands like fugazi who were amazing, but still called it quits on good terms.
