Hey all, for my first set of reccomendations, I'm doing my best to introduce you to a couple of bands from my area that seem to be grabbing some regional attention. They're not hardcore, but not only am I supporting my local scene, which is infinitely important, but I'm also closing all avenues of exploration to local musicians harassing me to review their records. Disclaimer out of the way, here are my first recommendations:
-At Midnight (http://www.at-midnight.com)
-Driving in Silence (http://www.drivinginsilence.com)
-Thin Dark Line (http://www.thindarkline.com)
I'll cover some of my favorite bands (which are mostly hardcore acts, obviously) next week. Let me know what you think of these guys. They all have their acts together and work hard.

Here is a band and CD that I would recommend:
They are called A Step Behind and they are awesome. They have an album out right now called, "Since We Can't Have Forever" and I think you would all like it.
Here are some links for you to check them out...

Yes, finally someone recommending them again. Jared did way back in the day, but they're great, I hung out with them a couple weekends ago:

TDL has improved immensely over the past year. Props to them, especially Bryan, for putting in the rehearsal hours necessary to take the band to a better place. One Eleven did make a good call. They're in with Matt Squire (Northstar, The Receiving End of Sirens) and Paul Leavitt (Over It, Don't Look Down) right now, and the end product should be nothing short of amazing.
Driving in Silence are some of the most honest people in rock and roll today. I wish I could see them tonight. I have work to do, though.
At Midnight are also fantastic. They seem to have come out of nowhere to establish themselves around here. They don't play enough, though.
Also, I'm from Rockville, MD.

I don't know where Rockville is, but I rep that Harford County in the citaaay of Bel Air - Which really isn't a city, it's actually kind of lame. But they call it a city.

Rockville is in Montgomery County, like within an hour of DC.

I like our scene.
Yeah, its getting a lot better. Theres still a lot of crappy, crappy bands, but there are some diamonds in the rough I think. Especially Driving in silencE. Right now, Liars Academy and Adelphi are our only big name bands, but that will change in the next four or five years.

No, Maryland's "scene" is disgusting for the most part.

Yes, well, I generally think of DC as its own thing because I mean how far is it from your house to DC, like one, maybe two hours almost, anyways, but yes, Dischord Records owns. But as far as Baltimore is concerned . . .

Most of the bands around me are fucking god awful. They have no idea who Dischord Records is, and all love Senses Fail, wear chick pants, and think they are in emo bands. It's fucking annoying.

They're like bad pop-punk/emo stuff. They made the final ten in the Takeover Records contest, but they still suck. I think they finally realized it and broke up, good career move.

That's how bands in nearly every suburban/small town scene are right now. Remember four to five years ago when every band was doing cheesy pop punk? That's just how the cycle of scenes go, several bands get huge, other bands are given opportunities to tour and get decently big, then fifth rate watered down copycat bands spring up everywhere in the burbs and ride it out until they kill it.
i bet in two years everyone will be doing fifth rate modest mouse and killers rip-offs in our small towns and suburbs.

Yea dude, it's so annoying. Like me neighbors band broke up because they wanted to be less-emo and I wanted to fucking puke. And I thought it was hilarious becuase all the bands around here are now adding "screaming" it is terrible, and they all like Alexisonfire and Killswitch way to much.
Oh well.

Yeah its sad, perfect example of what bossman is talking about is lowercase, they go to high school with my little sister and they're awful, but everyone under the age of sixteen thinks they're amazing :headshake
I agree with the prediction of the garage/indie sound starting to get big, but the good thing is, its hard to do that well and be original, so hopefully it won't happen like pop-punk did. I actually think Sylvan Screen is one of the best bands in the area right now and they go for that kind of sound, but you MUST MUST see them live to realize it, their recording isn't great and they don't have a purevolume account or anything, so you've gotta catch them live, but their singer sounds kind of like Death Cab except better, they have a weird upbeat sound like Sunny Day Real Estate and do weird Fugazi-esque things in their songs and they top it off with the occasional harps, cellos and violins in their songs, its good.
the dc scene is of course the dc scene and it rules.
the baltimore scene is a sad state of affairs, and i think the best known band from bmore right now is the oranges band.
as for the suburbs, the last show i went to was no joke probably the worst show i have ever been to. all watered down mallemocore wannabe bands.
