I'm sure you've all heard the stories of how these people were diving when the tsunami hit, and didn't even notice until they surfaced. Can someone provide a sound and logical explanation to how there is no force dispersed underwater when there's a big fucking wave on the surface moving at 500mph? My dad doesn't believe it, and I'm too lazy to look it up.

I don't know much about it but it's like when there is a rip tide beneath the surface of the water and you're not affected by it unless you dive down deep enough.

I learned a lot about tsunami "harbor waves" in my geologic natural disasters course last semester. The distance between one wave's crest and the next (a.k.a wavelength) determines how deep the energy of the wave will travel. For example: if the distance between wavelengths is 50 meters, then the wave will be about 50 meters deep. The overall depth of the water and the geography of the ocean bottom add lots of other variables into the equation. When a tsunami wave heads into shallow water it "breaks apart" because there is not enough water in front of it to create a complete crest. That is why a tsunami looks like a never ending rising tide when it hits land. That was a very brief explanation, but it is very possible for divers to survive a tsunami depending on their relative location to the epicenter. The picture attached may help a bit…

I figured that if you were well below the trough you would not notice it, but I would think that the water would have zero visibility. Hey dude do you go to UNLV? I plan on going there Fall Semester or Winter Semester.

Do you like it there? I used to live in Vegas a long time ago but that place changes in a blink of an eye, its hard to keep up. What are you majoring in? Sorry about the question but the UNLV website can only do so much.

I know this is the wrong place but...you write reviews at punknews.org...RIGHT ON! I love that site so much...so much better than this.

I've been living in Vegas for eight years and the place has totally changed. The city has grown quite a bit and the cost of living has skyrocketed. The amount of building that has occurred in the last eight years is mind boggling. If you have been gone for more than four years, you will not recognize the place. UNLV is no exception to the building boom that has occurred. Every semester they are opening a new building or a different satellite campus across town. The school is very progressive and all of the professors have been there to help me during their office hours. I have yet to encounter a terribly difficult course or professor, but that may be because I am an Information Systems major. In my major they only give you the building blocks for various technical careers and then you have to go and learn for yourself.

Overall I totally love going to school and there is definitely no shortage of ridiculously hot women on campus (Check out the Moyer Student Union area and you'll see what I mean ;) ). The only drawback is the parking situation because of the Thomas & Mack center. Whenever they have the National Finals Rodeo or a Metallica concert the parking lot is insane. I have always gotten a spot, but the walk to class sucks. Hope that helps, if you have any other questions just let me know.

The wall of displaced water moved along the sea floor, the wave doesn't travel along the top of the water. So unless you were in the bottom 30 meters of water or so, it might not move you at all. Just like how boats at sea weren't effected, but boats in harbors got basically sent a half a mile onshore.

He speaks truth, folks. Boats at sea and divers in the area do not notice that a Tsunami went through the area until they return to harbor unless they are already travelling close to the shore.

I go to UNLV as well...i moved here like a year ago or so. It gets a bad rep for who knows why...probably because it's so new compared to mostly every other state school in this country. There's also an insane amount of shit you can do outside of school to keep yourself sane ...especially if you've got a chaotic major like math or something in the sciences. Well good luck to ya.

So I take it that you like it there? Are there a lot of sweet jobs out there? That's mainly one of the incentives for me going there. (that and in-state tuition) How is the Dorm life?
