Rebuke - Promo 2008
Record Label: None
Release Date: March 2008
You know that Rebuke are cool as soon as they fire their opening salvo on this CD, the fast-paced and energy-filled song that is “Glacier of Doom”, a brief song about a bus about to explode. 'What could possibly be more thrilling than the prospect of a bus exploding?' I hear you ask. Well, this song definitely delivers in its short, sharp burst. However, do you want to know what's even cooler than the songs on here? Of course you want to know – the whole disc is available for free download on the band's website (below).
The second track follows on in similar fashion with the 2-minute long “Swan Song”. This track, along with the other three on this promo, is evocative of Rufio's early work, along with that of MxPx. While I expected the Swedes' English to be good, I didn't expect what I got – impressively-written lyrics delivered equally well, with the vocals fitting the style and pace of the music nearly perfectly.
“No Jury's Diction”, song number three, maintains the highly-paced and energetic feel of the recording. The lyrics on this song are as can only be expected from a band bridging original pop-punk and punk: poking fun at anything they can think of. In the three minutes that this song lasts, they manage to fit in digs at Jesus, the police (the actual police, not the band, music lovers) and even, perhaps, themselves, referencing punks in Gothenburg, Sweden (their home town). It's great, I can't get enough of it. I just can't help admitting that this is a fantastic four-track from the seasoned quartet.
Last, but not least, comes “Outside of Calamity” which is the title of their preceding full-length, though it doesn't feature on that record. As it's the final track, a lot of expectation is heaped upon the song and it surely doesn't disappoint, fulfilling every ounce of anticipation and finishing with anthemic gusto. Of course, nothing here is particularly new, but there is so little left to do now in music and they absolutely do what they do better than most.
What is certainly most disappointing about the CD is that it is under 10 minutes in length, though that does definitely make it easier to review. However, with music this good, we're lucky to get this much for free. It's absolute punk, so go take a listen.
01. Glacier of Doom
02. Swan Song
03. No Jury's Diction
04. Outside of Calamity
