His record, Shallow Graves, is one of my favorite records to come out this year.
Are there any other fans of him around here besides Vinh? If so, discuss.

Love this guy! Shallow Graves is maybe my favorite album thus far in the year, so good really. The EP isn't so bad either. Is it just me or do you guys hear a ton of Nick Drake influence in this guy? Not a bad thing though, Nick Drake = best singer/songwriter (or however you want to put it) of all time in my opinion heh. Except maybe Bob Dylan. But I still prefer Drake. Silly me, now I'm ranting.

He's the reason I found out about Shallow Grave. Such a wonderful Folk album and, after nearly a month or so with it, it's already etched a place in my top 10 of the year so far.

You are wrong. Pink Moon is a joke compared to Dylan's contribution to music, lyrics and cultural impact.
I agree that Bob Dylan's contribution is much stronger/bigger, but (in my humble opinion) Pink Moon is the epitome of all things. Save one or two albums.

So many wonderful artists coming from Sweden. I was recommended to listen to his music by a fellow lover of the group Little Dragon (also from sweden). He is a brilliant artist and I really wish he had more music out! If you haven't already you should check out the music video for "it will follow the rain" its really beautiful.

Impact sure, but if we're strictly talking music quality and nothing more, I'll put Pink Moon above anything Dylan ever recorded.

A Love Supreme comes closest.

Ahh, well I agree that ALS is a fantastic album, probably in my top 15 somewhere, but my top albums would probably go as follows (in no order)

Pink Moon
Kid A
F#A#(Infinity)
Abbey Road
Our Endless Numbered Days
Slanted & Enchanted
In The Aeroplane Over The Sea

Not really sure how they should be ordered, but Pink Moon would definitely be in the top 3. It changes weekly though.

Wouldn't go nearly that far on my end.

leonard cohen might change my mind, ive heard a few songs. but as of right now, that's how it stands. something about the blend between his earnest, uncomprimising voice and the chord patterns he uses is just so emotionally engaging to me.

Chromefox
11/18/09, 02:49 PM
Doesn't touch Seven Swans for me, or For Emma, but still a beautiful album. Makes me want to join a campfire circle.

IWasaCamera
11/18/09, 02:56 PM
Surely, acoustic albums don't stop after Leonard Cohen.

With that said, I am quite fond of Shallow Grave (introduced it to this forum after all) and do agree that Matsson's approach is a special one. Wonderful voice and a rather elemental quality that touches on past folk eras while remaining quite entrenched in the present. Vast improvement over the EP too. Can't wait for a new release.

It's amazing if you think of it. I was much more of a cunt myself in mid '08 (shocking, I know), and I'd have exchanges with him where I was completely oblivious to his elitist preaching. It wasn't until after he was banned and I "grew up a bit" that I realize how much of an insufferable asshole he was. I've also been told that it's a lot more dynamic. i consider that a good thing, when he's shifting from just acoustic riff + melody and is actually giving his songs some ups and downs. if Shallow Grave lacks anything, given it's intentional simplicity, it's that.

new album was fucking gorgeous, and an excellent follow-up. it retained all the blind emotion and impressive fingerstyle guitar work of Shallow Grave but with more well-rounded songwriting with more varied dynamics and less of a repetitive focus on the riffs. the slightly improved production helped with that as well -- one might argue that lo-fi is more endearing and engaging for folk music, and that's fair, but i like the fact that he has one album like that and one slightly better-sounding one. his voice is somehow even MORE moving and expressive, i mean there is simply nothing like it, it's my favorite part of his music. and while i've got no complaints about his brilliant lyrics on the previous record, he seems more willing to write how he feels like writing on any given song, instead of continuing to subject himself to the "folksingers always have to speak in oblique images" dogma. last but not least, my head just about exploded from the album closer. a piano ballad was a huge curveball coming from him, and while it's not one of the better songs on the record, i think he accomplished it fairly well (i mean, how could you not love that voice on top of a PIANO?).

surprisingly, this is my favorite album of 2010 so far. i never expected to be saying that about this record after having heard broken social scene's and caribou's latest. he's definitely the exception to the rule -- he is the simplest artist that i love this much.
