I just spoke with Phil Sneed, guitarist for Story of the Year (http://www.storyoftheyear.net). They have built a studio in one of their basements and are currently writing on the new album. They are wanting to get between 40 and 60 songs completed before heading into the studio in March. Also, you can hear Phil lend his amazing vocals on the new Anberlin (http://www.anberlin.com) album, Never Take Friendship Personal, which will be in stores Febuary first. Finally, don't forget if you're a signed or unsigned band, Royal Crest Records, is looking for bands to put on their new compilation. You can email Sneed or Randy at info@royalcrestrecords.com for more information.

asanine.... 40 - 60 completed songs by march?. Either they will be very shitty, but still 40 - 60 shitty songs would be hard to make. I am thinking maybe 40 - 60 riff parts, but that still seems kind of out there in terms of numbers.

they aren't going to use all of the songs they write, most bands write alot more songs for an album, then pick the best ones, i am excited to hear their new stuff, i have a feeling i'm either gonna love it or hate it

you listen to senses fail, spitalfield, avenged sevenfold...hell you listen to alot of bands that are 'generic'. say what you will, story of the year is one of the best and most popular bands out there, with one of the best live shows...their album sales reveal that

Just because I agree that their generic, does not mean I dislike them or think they make bad music. Dont be so quick to judge.
And also , Calm down your not that cool. :wink3:

just becaue a band has good album sales does not make it a great band. Look at some other bands with great album sales (i.e. Good Charlotte, Simple Plan). Popularity doesn't make music good, it makes it marketable. I can agree they have a great live show, but the music they sell just oozes with suck.

I soured a little on SOTY when they started getting massively popular, much like what is happening to Hawthorne Heights right now. But Page Avenue was a fantastic release for a beginning band and their follow-up should be stellar, as long as they don't turn into the next 3 Doors Down with all of their songs sounding the same.

I was impressed when they joked about a lot of their songs having a motif of death in their titles when they did their Sessions @ AOL. At least they realize that it's something laughable.

Hawthorne Heights sucked before they got popular. So did SOTY. Get over it.

And the reason they joke about their songs being generic is because they are unapologeticly making genric "emo" music to capitalize on a trend. They used to be a bad nu-metal band, and since they couldn't capitalize on that trend, they moved to the next one.

To the Slade comment above calebs post... no shit they arent going to use all the songs. I dont think I could stay sane with 40 new soty songs. They thought makes me shudder.

What exactly makes a band generic? Seriously i want to know. Everyone makes comments like oh you listen to Spitalfield or Silverstein, their generic so you have a bad taste in music. I love those bands and honestly i need to know what makes bands generic. There are so many bands out there it is hard to make music that is "different".

I wish Phil did the background vocals on the SOTY cd, it would be better that way. His voice is so high, but I like it.

If a band does not step out of the box at all, and just makes music that goes with a trend, it can be viewed as generic. I agree with you however, it's hard to be differen't. and those bands that are being called generic make great music that people scoff at cause it sounds similar to something else. It's like someone getting mad at someone else for wearing cloths. My personal views are that its rediculous and good music is good music. bands like Say anything , Minus the bear , Mc lars, I consider these to be artists that step outside the box. Still if a band like Relient K can make great pop-punk then awesome good for them. Who cares if its generic.

Most debut albums arent the most original thing in the world. Over a period of 4 or 5 albums, or less, bands develop a sound that is theirs.

LOL you have a point but am I the only one who'd put money that SOTY doesn't last 4-5 albums?

I'm just thinking back to about a year and a half ago when SOTY was the new, hip thing and all of you ate it up. But now that they've gained their popularity, you feel the need to turn on them and criticize their music just so your peers won't look down on you. It's amusing. Really.

Find me a post that suggests I "ate it up". No really. I'd love to see it.
