I'm a 'Stros fan down here in Pasadena/Houston area and I hope to the baseball gods that we can retain this guy but I'm sort of weary now as it gets down to tonight's 11 pm deadline to sign this guy....I think the Mets are our biggest competition to keeping Beltran and the Yankess still scare me as well as they can just come in last minute and offer a substantial contract to him.....but I'm still holding hope here....what have you guys heard about it? Thoughts on where you think he'll finally end up?

dude Beltran isn't even that good. I think there are tons of people better than him. He just had a great season.post season last year. I think this year will be a regular year.

7 years is a long time. he might blossom into the next Ted Williams, he might shatter his wrist during his first game. waaaaaay too long of a contract.

He's not $100 million good

indieriot
01/08/05, 11:39 PM
he's worth a 100 mil just because he has scott boras as an agent, if he didnt have scott boras as an agent everyone would be offering him a 75 million, 6 year deal.
I was a yankee fan all my life until last season, and getting Randy Johnson didnt bring me any closer. i really hope the cubs get him, especially now that the astros are out

I think the Mets will get him. I think the Yanks have a chance but I don't know how much they want him. This is too bad. I wanted him to resign with ths Stros.

While I still think he's a great player, he's very very very overrated. He will cash in millions upon millions of dollars, mainly because of one great postseason series. Sure he had a good year, but like many have said, just ONE good year.

all the mets got were pedro and beltran. those two alone won't make them a great team. they're no where near a shoe in for the wild card or the NL East

A $30 million per year start.

Previously you said Beltran wasn't that good, now he and pedro are a start? Fickle much?

The Mets are still gonna suck balls next year. Pedro may be nursing a nagging injury and Beltran alone with Cliff Floyd(if he doesn't get traded) and 7 guys who could barely cut it as the Norfolk Tides will be lucky to finish 3rd next year. If Piazza ever needed a breakout season again this would be it.

Their rotation might be alright with Pedro, Benson, and Zambrano, but one of these years Glavine is gonna start pitching like his age. Don't even get me started on that lethargic bum Steve Trachsel.

Their bullpen is so crappy they might wanna see what John Franco is up to these days.

As a Cubs fan taunting other teams is kinda moot but I am so glad Beltran ended up there than back in Houston in our division. Now he only gets to clobber us at Wrigley 3 times a year. I wanted him on the Cubs but I am glad they didn't go out and try to give him a big 7 year deal. We possibly learned our lesson now with Sosa.

Now whats the Mets excuse??? I think they still have to send Mo Vaughn a paycheck this year.

norfolk tides haha
mo vaughn is a free agent sadly, so they arent sending him any more paychecks unless they deferred money on his contract

Whats worse is how the Cubs got their asses handed to them by this group of brigands the last week of the season.

Hmm I don't know how much better the Mets will be but if Pedro and Glavine are good, things could get scary.
Plus Beltran probably chose the Mets because as Pedro said they are good to Latin players.

Not as much as the GM Omar Minaya...he said he still isn't done. They are planning on going after Sosa, Magglio Ordonez, and Carlos Delgado.

I just hope the Cubs can sign Maggs before someone else does, especially if they lose Sosa.

Exactly. I think this is it for the Mets. Sosa can't go anywhere cuz of his contract. Ordonez i have no clue about and Delgado will probably go to the Orioles, another "Latin-friendly" team.

Ya Beltran was probably the best outfielder free agent but he is very overated. So yes the Mets were fortunate to pick him up but Beltran is probably going to have a regular year.

If Beltran wasn't such a good fielder and baserunner I would fear that possibility but he does so many things that he probally will turn out fine. He won't be the second coming of Ken Griffey Junior (early on in his career), but he will be a very good player.

I dont know the #'s but he would of probably made more money taking the 107 million from the Astros. State tax and all.

well perhaps im extra skeptical because i live in l.a. i saw shawn green have a good year with the blue jays, then get signed by the dodgers for way too much. we got one, maybe two exceptional years from him and now we're trading him to arizona for prospects

ya that was just utter colapse
and the fact that sammy sosa got liek 2 hits the entire week didnt help
i remember the mets won either 2 out of 3 or swept the cubs at shea, and that didnt help either

now that Carlos Beltran has been an offical met for more then a day, should we start a 'Carlos Delgado . . . . Where do you think he'll end up?' thread and then when it looks liek he will sign with the mets, we start taking bets on how much weight he'll gain between when he signs and when training camp starts

He's going to Boston. We have 2 1B to shop around...and they both have good upside.

I have to hope that he does well because over the past few years the mets have had some players perform well below what they were expected(Roberto Alomar, Mo Vaughn, Cliff Floyd, Roger Cedeno, Mike Cameron...). In theory they have to sign one player who meets expectations, even a blind squirrel eventually finds a nut.
