View Full Version : Music that genuinely disturbs/terrifies you

Whether it be the lyrical subject matter or the sonic ambiance, what music scares you, disturbs you or both?
Radiohead has always been a band who's compositions frighten me.
We Suck Young Blood, with it's macabre imagery stemming from the metaphor for draining the lifeforce from the youth for the prosperity of America's military to the unnerving, cerebral and slow African Workhouse drum beat and Yorke's sickly vocals, the track generally makes me feel uncomfortable and scared.
Kid A, with it's gruesome lyrical subject matter, is extremely horrific, especially compounded by the voice manipulation that makes Yorke's voice sound like a ethereal disconnected sound without a trace of humanity and the almost childlike, dreamworld-esque atmosphere the song creates.
Rabbit in your Headlights, by UNKLE featuring...wait for it...Thom Yorke is also intensely spooky, from the meticilous piano part to the production-included soundwaves that float in at certain parts of the song that are reminiscent of a girl screaming to the spoken expert from Jacob's Ladder and the music video, this song leaves me petrified every time I hear it. It sounds like a track that would fit perfectly into a David Lynch score.

I don't think I've ever been scared or disturbed by a song. Not saying it doesn't exist, just that it's never happened to me.

"Eraser" - Nine Inch Nails
I don't know of any other song that can trigger suicidal thoughts. Both it's ambient buildup for the first 3 and a half minutes and the chilling "KILL ME!" screams near the end combine to create the most apt murdering soundtrack. Has to be listened to with headphones though.

Set Fire To Flames can be pretty creepy. Their double album, especially.
Then there is Zero Kama. As far as I know, he's only released one album. It's a very dark ambient cd he recorded in the late 80's as part of a ritual and.... wait for it... every single instrument he used on the album was made entirely out of human bones, which makes the already dark and atmospheric music even creepier. It's pretty disturbing.

Toby Keith is actually a democrat and an Obama supporter.
I know, and I get the point that the song is because his father died in war (I think?) and so of course he's upset about it and he sees it as his duty to be patriotic and all...that doesn't mean the song doesn't irk me.

"Kim" - Eminem. Almost too real and you can totally feel the hatred and insanity in Em's voice. The "bleed, bitch, bleeeeeeed" part is unreal. I always wondered what his label was thinking when they okayed that for his album. Yeeeesh.
"Iowa" - Slipknot. Just take 15 minutes (yes, 15) and listen to it. The lyrics are beyond creepy and it's extremely atmospheric.
"Disgustipated" - Tool. The spoken word stuff and animal noises get to me. The vocal effect in the chorus gives me chills too.

This. I remember I first bought the album when I was really young.. that song scared the shit out of me the first time I heard it and I don't think I've listened to it again since. For some reason however I was never even remotely disturbed by people like Brotha Lynch Hung and Necro.. their music came off as far more annoying than disturbing.

A lot of Dance Gavin Dance's lyrics are a bit disturbing, some of the stuff he comes out with makes you sorta go "eh?",
And there are HELL loads of "brutal" metal bands around this area that literally have some of the most shocking lyrics I've ever heard, stuff I wouldn't even DARE repeat here. These kids must have issues.
I agree with Limousine being quite disturbing, the subject matter is very upsetting to think about.
Also the untitled track is shit scary with just the left channel, trust me, try it if you have the means. Especially if the heavy part of Luca wakes you up and you don't know what's going on, it's horrible.

Einstürzende Neubauten -- "Armenia"
All those bands like Cannibal Corpse don't really disturb me as it is disgusting to the point of hilarity at the stupidity of what is being said.
Not really bands but definitely certain songs, 'Street Spirit (Fade Out)' by Radiohead being one, 'Ticks and Leeches' by Tool being another just by the way MJK morphs his voice into something that personifies anger.
Not sure if it disturbs me but My Bloody Valentine are a band who I can never really listen to, not because the music is bad but just the wall of noise effect is very powerful.

I thought Teenage Jesus & the Jerks were relatively tame in comparison to many of the other luminary No Wave bands.
I'd go back to one of its origins before venturing off further. Check out Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music.
Also, while different, there was an incestious relationship between Industrial and No Wave in the '70s. Try Throbbing Gristle and Einsturzende Neubauten.
Also, as for "pure Jazz Punk spawned No Wave," check out James Chance and the Contortions immediately. Friction was solid as well. Of course, Sonic Youth was the byproduct of this subgenre. If you don't own Daydream Nation, that's something you should rectify immediately.
