City of Caterpillar - I just saw a review of them posted recently which made me think of them. Their self-titled was outstanding.

American Aquarium (http://www.purevolume.com/americanaquarium) - The_Bled_13 recommended this to me, and although I have yet to find anything beyond what's posted at their purevolume page, what is posted definitely makes me want to find their EP. It's kind of a mix between folk and rock I suppose.

Ulrich Schnauss (http://www.ulrich-schnauss.net/) - A Strangely Isolated Place: I'm recommending this again because no one ever listens to my weird recs, but if you picked this up and did not love it, I'd be amazed. This CD is fucking beautiful.

Nasum (http://www.nasum.com) - I don't remember who exactly told me to check Shift out, but someone who always throws metal at me did. I haven't listened to it much yet, but it definitely seems good. Pretty crazy grindcore.

Pelican (http://www.hydrahead.com/pelican) - Australasia is a quality drone metal release. Think along Isis lines if you've never heard them.

Some experimental/electronica:
Bark Psychosis (http://www.barkpsychosis.com) - I just recently picked up Hex and it's definitely some good experimental electronica, very soft and methodical.

Squarepusher - If you like more trippy Aphex Twin stuff (like Drukqs) then check out Go Plastic.

On that note, I'm looking for some techno/trance/rave shit that's basically just made for parties. I don't need any ambient or experimental or artsy electronica, I have that covered, but I'm not getting so lucky with this stuff, so if you know any good albums, tell me. Maybe I'm trying to go too deep or something and people like DJ Tiesto would be good (although the one album I have by him wouldn't be great for such an event). Just pure rave music.

Why is this the second time this week Maladay's been brought up in relation to City Of Caterpillar? As far as I know they sound nothing alike - is there ex-members or something I'm not aware of?

same vocalist, chris taylor. malady = ex COC / pg. 99 (weren't pg. 99 members in COC anyway? there is so much inbreeding in these bands)

Paul Oakenfold - Tranceport
He may not have the best transitions, but he puts some amazing tracks on this mix. Really. His Another World double-CD is a damn good mix, too.

And I second the Paul Van Dyk suggestion. Out There And Back is amazing.

You also cannot go wrong with the Global Underground series (...usually). #16 from Moscow with Deep Dish behind the tables is my favourite.

DJ Josh Wink and DJ Shadow are both excellent.

You should definitely check out Bloc Party. To date they have only one release, the Bloc Party EP, from which Banquet is the best song and the first single. The Banquet (Phones Disco Remix) , also on the EP, is even more perfect for parties. Their debut full-length, Silent Alarm , comes out on January 25th. I would describe them as the band that would be created if Franz Ferdinand and The Killers (and maybe Interpol if they wanted to make it a threesome), had a lovechild. They are just now gaining popularity in England, but apparently they've gotten some airplay on MTV2 in the US (so I hear). I feel like, depending on the quality of the new album they could really blow up. Check them out and feel free to IM me on AIM (sn: DerekDavies) to let me know what you think.

ah City of Caterpillar. Ryan you never cease to amaze me. Your a very critical writer (I can tell by your paper, very good work) and you have a great taste in music. Keep up the good work. If you do, check out Malady. Nothing like City but still a good listen. You probably already have but check out Saetia. Thats what dreams are made of.

I'm not sure if you heard about this, but the singer and guitarist of Nasum, Mieszko Talarczyk was in Thailand when the Tsunami hit and hasn't been heard from since. Its kind of sad: http://lambgoat.com/news/view.aspx?id=4283&search=Nasum

Robdobi,
Malady is playing the AS220 in Providence with Envy (a Japanese hardcore band on Level-Plane) and Disappearer on January 17.

So Here We Are by Bloc Party is one of my current favorite songs. The first time in a loooooooong time that I actually discovered a band via the radio. I hope the rest of their stuff is equally as good.
