What are your suggestions on a pedal? Preferably cheap. I know buying individual pedals is always the best way to do things but are there any multi-effect pedals that have good bass distortion and other cool effects?
I run my guitar through something like this and it has some cool effects:

Find an older Russian Big Muff. Don't get one of the newer American ones, they're jokes by comparison.

Those DigiTech multi effects do some things okay, but distortion is definately not one of them.
For bass I use a DigiTech bass driver for distortion. Lots of different sounds on there and you can blend in some of the clean signal so you don't lose all of you low end like with a lot of distortions. It should only be about $80 or so, cheaper than a multi effects pedal.

The suggestions here are awesome and you might also consider two awesome options: any of the Tech 21 products (just search for "Tech 21 Bass") or a Line 6 floor POD.

The Tech 21 stuff is awesome. I have my SansAmp on pretty much always. Though, one should note that they offer more of an overdrive than a full-on distortion.
Another good one would be any of the Pro-Co RAT pedals. They aren't made for bass though, so they somtimes need a little bit of modification in order to keep enough low end in your sound.

it depends on the type of sound you're wanting...overdrive or full-on distortion. the bass player in my band uses a boss od-1 and it creates some sweet sounding saturation. i'm also a fan of sansamp pedals for bass. if you're going for a more extreme sound, try a big muff or proco ra. i just got a keeley-modded rat and it's pretty crazy for regular guitar stuff. check 'em out at robertkeeley.com (http://www.robertkeeley.com).

I love my Boss ODB-3. I've tried many distortion and overdrive pedals and that one is easily the best I've tried. Listen to the intro to Around The World by RHCP to hear it in action.
