I remember when we watched "An Inconvienient Truth" in my freshman Science class and the teacher got up in front of everyone and essentially said that she does not agree with anything that was said in the video.

I also remember calling her an idiot and getting an in school suspension.

The fact stands that we truly are fucked when it comes to the climate. It's beyond the point of fixing at this juncture, the only thing we can truly hope for is that we as human beings can put aside our petty differences and work together to find a way to adapt.

I don't think we have another couple decades dude... I mean the ice isn't going to exist in another couple decades, and it's not like we can put it back once it's gone. We need to start figuring out what the fuck we are going to do right now.

People naturally die... does this mean we should stop convicting murderers, stop treating terminally ill patients, stop giving aid to third world countries, and stop funeral services? After all, shit happens. 'Stop complaining about it'.

Those are completely different. The earth changing is natural and there is no way to change it. Murderers are not natural. And the others we can control so we should try to help. All I am saying is that people putting solar panels on their house and using less gas in not going to effect the environment.

All I am saying is that people putting solar panels on their house and using less gas in not going to effect the environment.this is insane logic. it's like a smoker saying "well we are all going to die sooner or later so i might as well smoke 10 packs a day". yes, the world might be warming just because it's the natural order of things, but that doesnt mean we shouldn't try to slow it down in whatever way we can.

Murderers could be considered natural, if you believe that most act on basic instincts. That wasn't really my point, however...

We can't control the environment completely no; but we can control the rate at which it is changing... seeing as we have sped it up dramatically. Do we refuse to give cancer patients treatment, simply because they are going to die anyway? No, we try and slow down the process to give them a better quality of life in their last moments. Death is inevitable; we know that much. There is so much more we have to learn about the planet, and if we throw caution into the wind, we may never know. At the most basic level all it takes is a few simple sacrificises, which actually can better ourselves as people too (get fitter by walking, etc.).

Carelessness is not the answer; there is simply no denying that our activities have damaged the planet.

anthony051
09/24/08, 11:39 AM
Anyone can play Devil's Advocate when it comes to Global Warming, but I am of a line of thought that would like to see this planet actually inhabitable for my kids and their kids. Being a snobbish dick and saying that the damage is already done is retarded. I'm ot saying everyone should go out and buy a hybrid or ride their damn bike to work, but there is a lot of simple steps that everyone can take to at least help with the problem.

Permafrost in the arctic is melting and releasing methane into the atmosphere, which is apparently 20 times worse as a greenhouse gas and will only speed up global warming. Which in turn will melt more permafrost and release more methane...

I think we've had this argument before. You make the point of natural climate change which is true, but factor in the accelerated fashion it is occurring, the human contribution is the only difference between past and present cycles.

I guess a better question is why is this a problem? Why is it a bad thing to do something to improve the lives of yourself and others by caring about the environment? I mean the earth really isn't in trouble here, humans are. People are the ones losing their homes to the hurricanes, people are the ones getting cancer from plastics and pollution- why would you be against getting people to change this?

not saying that we humans don't contribute to climate change, but no one seems to be able to make up their mind weather we're getting hotter or colder. truth is we've only been documenting weather patterns for maybe 2 to 300 hundred years, hardly enough time to draw any conclusions about weather we're headed for destruction.

in the end i think we should take care of our planet and our environment, but i also think that Al Gores "Global warming" is just a scare tactic. The republicans say "vote for us or terrorists will bomb us" the democrats say "vote for us or the planet will burn up"

Since when do Liberals use that as a vote-garnering tactic? It is just one more thing that the Republicans are denying. It isn't just Democrats; it's gone far beyond that. Most of the non-republican crowd have come to their senses that global warming is real.

point is obama isn't going to make the world love the american government much more then bush has so it's silly to act like he will.
what he might do is get support from more world leaders through a greater emphasis on diplomacy, but even that isn't a sure thing.
